In case you haven't been following along too much at home, we'll give you the quick recap: The Apple App Store submission and review process has been, historically, something of a total mess. There's been very little consistency in Apple's standards and plenty of app developers (including game developers!) have found themselves on the wrong side of Apple's approval process. But the Big A is looking to change all that. In a public statement, the company says it's looking to "relax some restrictions [it] put in place earlier this year."
What kind of restrictions? "In particular, we are relaxing all restrictions on the development tools used to create iOS apps, as long as the resulting apps do not download any code," the statement reads. "This should give developers the flexibility they want, while preserving the security we need." If you don't speak Giant Corporation, let us translate: Developers will be able to use third-party tools like Adobe's Flash CS5 to create iPhone apps. Adobe, surely having thought this was a battle it had already lost, was pleased with Apple's announcement, telling All Things Digital, "We are encouraged to see Apple lifting its restrictions on its licensing terms, giving developers the freedom to choose what tools they use to develop applications for Apple devices."
While Apple may be relaxing those restrictions, it's also going one step further and publishing its "App Store Review Guidelines to help developers understand how we review submitted apps." This new found desire for transparency has already given us an amazing amount of insight into the app review process. For example, did you know Apple has a policy on fart apps? Did you know it was this direct? "We have over 250,000 apps in the App Store. We don't need any more Fart apps." If you insist, Apple!
Check out Engadget for some more great pulls from the Review Guidelines PDF (or snag a copy for your Kindle at the source link below). With the iOS platform becoming an increasingly important (not to mention vibrant!) marketplace for indie games, we're thrilled to see Apple make some difficult, though necessary, steps towards opening up its walled garden. Now we can see if there's a policy against us making a Tower Defense game called Apple's Walled Garden, where you strategically place reviewer-shaped turrets to keep unwelcome apps out.
Apple will 'relax' some iOS development restrictions, notably third-party tools like Flash CS5

Everyone is quick to point out how this lets Flash back in, but the real root of the change here is UDK and id tech 5.
The former terms basically said "no middleware" and yet Epic Sword was the belle of the ball at the Apple event last week. Quakecon made headlines with Rage on iPhone.
Something had to change. So it did. This is a win for developers.

Now someone wake me up from this dream, someone's obviously trying to implant an absurd idea in my head for some reason, Inception-style. That, or Steve Jobs thinnks it's April.

also, the document was worded perfectly. direct, to the point, no bull-shit, funny, entertaining, and plain REAL. all the haters who think it was condescending, as if the guideline was directed at them, can jump off a building.
Thank you i said my peace.

the commenters on engadget are the hugest fandroids on the net... im willing to bet the term "fandroid" originated there by the sheer amount of ravaging android lovers who only agree how awesome android is and how everyone who disagrees is an apple fanboy
on top of that they sound like droidbots by spewing the same crap in every article mentioning the words Apple, iPhone, iOS or Steve Jobs... including but not limited: "if you have to _______, you're doing it wrong" and "DROOOIIIDDD".... then they bust a nut with every new Android phone, and swear that its better then the older Android phone that came out 3 hours before. They always want dual processors for no reason at all because they think that Android will get the kinda games Apple has been getting since the early days of iOS... of course they will never because Android is really just a fragmented OS that has been whored out so many times that devs dont even bother at this point when they see no profit from it

reading comments on engadget honestly makes me sick. they're all talking out of their asses, just straight up hating on apple products like the company has never done anything good or right. It makes me want to punch a baby.
i love apple, i love my mac, and i most definitely LOVE my ipod.
whenever i get handed an iphone, i can sit with that thing for hours just downloading apps and having a blast.
when i borrow an android phone like an evo i get bored and lost. its not easy to use. the apps are not as fun i dont know how to explain it but they just arnt.
im not even going to respond to the person below me. its people like that guy that annoy the f*** out of me!!!
NO engadget is not paid
NO they do not regurgitate, they make it easier, better, and more accessible.
and NO iphone lovers are not "igasming" over their devices. you dont even see them defending themselves because they are having too much fun and actually doing productive shit on their iOS devices not having all this time to talk shit. iphone people have almost NOTHING to complain about so you dont see them on here.
Am i right?

but either way, apple makes the best stuff. until a company can bring down its manufactuing costs and be able to make its own competitive software AND hardware, nothing will touch them.
Apple knows all they have to do is put their iphone on other carriers and the "fanboys" will cease to exist. and google will be more competitive instead of diluting their android market with shit tons of phones.

well i didnt mean " cease to exist", but by the time apple is on verizon or whatever, google SHOULD come out with android 3.0+ and attempt to be as buttery smooth and intuitive as an apple product.
i swear i never ever rant, but omg its getting aweful! im like agghhh!!! i dont even care but human nature is to join sides, even if your side wrong, just to trick the human psyche to not just love and enjoy what you have, but to use it as a weapon fight back, like its some sort of war.
to anyone that cares, this is why humans will always have wars and fights and differences. its normal, but its pathetic. These people need moar college education.
In the future, if we educate the world ENTIRELY, we can stop wars, but it takes education, knowledge and wisdom, which obviously engadget commenters lack.
okay okay i end it!!!!!!!

In terms of App creation, yes. Flash will still not be available for sites and videos.

it means better engines can be built to run more sexy looking games... i really think that tech demos like the idTech5 and the Citadel Unreal Engine have proven to apple to ease up on the restrictions because developers arent morons and that they can really prove how powerful the phone can be if apple just gives them a little more freedom

They need to show some respect, about 2/3 of graphic designers and other digital media professionals use Adobe products on Apple computers.
Every-time I see a creative company's office they are exclusively Apple+Adobe, and they all hate Windows, because it isn't "hip".
If Adobe was exclusively on Windows there would be far less Apple computers being purchased for businesses (& schools).

@Anticrawl :: No I did not mean Cartoon Network Cartoons, -and somehow I forgot about game development studios, because you are right about them being predominantly with Windows.

So? Adobe is there because of the Creative Suite, not Flash. Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator are the backbone of print work. Flash is an aging relic, it has been irrelevant for 99% of all web applications for years now.
People still using Flash for web development are either working on web games or are hacks.

I want two apps. Google Nav and VLC. I don't care how they're developed, just approve them and get on with selling hardware, OK Apple.

Too late Apple. You lost me recently when some great Androids phones (aside from Nexus) were made available in Canada.
When you allow me to do things like this:
http://lifehacker.com/5599116/how-to-turn-your-android-phone-into-a-fully+automated-superphone
Without having to jailbreak my phone, then maybe I might consider coming back but after 2 years of being tied into a closed phone environment (after having come from 4 years with a Treo 650), I'm glad that I can do and install what I want on my phone again. You have great hardware Apple (aside from your terrible design decision about the antennae) and you will go far but remember what pushed you to the edge back in 80/90's. Your inability to create an open architecture. People will get tired of it someday.
Yeah, this should be an engadget post but Joystiq baited me good on this one. ;)
