Bethesda parent company trademarks 'Oblivion' for use in films
24
ZeniMax Media -- umbrella company to Bethesda Softworks and id Software, among others -- trademarked the rights to the term "Oblivion" last month, as it pertains to "Motion picture film production; entertainment services, namely, providing motion picture theatrical films in the field of fantasy games." VGTribune noticed the filing, which raises the possibility of an Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion film -- or something related.
The past few years have yielded a mess of cross-media expansion from gaming into film, with everything from Assassin's Creed to Halo getting live-action content delivered pre-launch as part of a game's marketing campaign. THQ has even made it a goal to push its games across multiple mediums with an initiative set forth by "crossmedia" evangelist (and executive vice president) Danny Bilson. Zenimax could just as likely be preparing a promotional film for use as a prequel to a forthcoming Elder Scrolls sequel. Stranger things have happened.

Please, whatever higher being may exist, don't let them make this game into an actual movie. I don't want it ruined and it doesn't have a set storyline so a movie would probably ruin it. Bethesda games don't have storylines, you make your own depending on what you do in the game. They aren't even like Mass Effect where you get to the same general ending no matter what you do and the dominant story is that of the hero. Two people could play any of the recent Bethesda games multiple time and not ever experience the same thing. If you make a movie out of it you are going to alienate your fan base.

I could see an Elder Scrolls 5 movie but I think basting one on Oblivion is far too removed from the games release

They've also applied for trademarks on the word "Skyrim" in relation to clothing, video games, and motion pictures:

As for the motion picture-ness of Oblivion, I'm really hoping that this is just to keep someone else from abusing the name for their own purposes :/ The games are too sandbox-y for a movie to work...

A fantasy movie based around the laws of the Elder Scrolls universe could be good if it got a good script writer who knew how to make good stories.
R.A. Salvatore would be great for creating the story, and Peter Jackson for Director, but that is just personal experience of great fantasy.

I must be blind to that. After reading your comment I played Oblivion for a bit and it just looked to me like all of the characters walked equally woodenly.

I wonder if Zenimax already knows there's a sci-fi/fantasy (space western, really) movie called Oblivion already made, from Full Moon Pictures.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110706/
It even has a sequel, Oblivion 2: Backlash
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117223/
Fun Fact: This movie was the "inspiration" for Firefly/Serenity (*cough*rip-off*cough*) but Whedon figured Oblivion was too obscure for anyone to notice.

I'm thinking that the real reason Bethesda is filing this trademark is to prevent Joseph Kosinski (Tron Legacy) from calling his next project Oblivion.
Sure, they COULD be working to make a feature length movie based on the franchise but if that were the case, it would have been "The Elder Scrolls" that they would have Trademarked, not just Oblivion. If it was a film they wanted, they would tell a new story in the saga, one that goes hand in hand with the games, not replaces them.
More likely, they could be planning a series of shorts, similar to the Halo or Assassain's Creed movies that would serve as a marketing bridge to the The Elder Scrolls V, which they have yet to announce but are hard at work on. However, if THAT were the case, they would likely be branded under the title of the next game, whatever that may be...
No... I think it more likely they caught wind of Mr Kosinski's project and have made an attempt to ensure that going forward, people don't associate the term Oblivion with anything else other then their vision of hell, as it relates to the Elder Scrolls Franchise.
And if that be the case, it's probably a good thing, I'm sure Kosinski can come up with a more original title for his film, should Bethesda get what it wants here.
