Bungie's Halo AI secrets exposed in technical review
29
If you're looking for information about a hot new gun that will be shootable in the almost-here Halo: Reach, you might want to flip to one of the many other stories we've written about the game. If you want super esoteric insight into the high-functioning AI design of the series -- that is to say, the enemies' actual programmed intelligence, and not the game's fictional AI constructs -- we suggest checking out AI Game Dev's 42-point analysis on Bungie's tricks and innovations for making those pesky Elites so darn pesky.
Of course, these tips will really only benefit you if you happen to be a game designer or programmer, though we suppose you could hypothetically use the information to impress your friends while playing Reach next week. "Look at the way Bungie implemented those perceptual information objects," you might say to your awestruck cohorts. "Man, that really must have cut down on some memory fragmentation and recycling problems."

I paid mine off near the beginning of the year, had to cancel my preorder since I was supposed to be in LA/Burbank during the release date, but had to cancel that and re-preorder it again in my hometown today.
So, yeah, I'll be waiting in line too!
(Yes I know it's a cool story bro.)

I for one believe that Halo has a very complex AI, or it seems so.
Friendly and Enemy. I remember fighting a bBrute in Halo 3, i tried to ram him with my warthog but he spun around, jumped and started shooting. That seemed amazing.
I bet Halo Reach will have an even better AI because now you have more than one teammates following you.

Complex with the exception of the part of the AI that governs driving. Computers can't drive worth a shit in Halo... and it would appear that, from what's been said, it isn't any better in this game. I'd rather gun then drive in single player but the AI controlled drivers are dumbasses. It's a small gripe though... it can get out of hand in some situations.
I went back through Halo 3 and was playing the level where you get dropped in to the islands or whatever to take out the AA Wraiths and the giant shields. I got into the gunner seat and my driver proceeded to attempt to drive through an opening between a boulder and a cliff face that was less than half the width of the warthog. Forwards and backwards I went before I figured it would be a nice time to go upstairs and take a shower... just to test the AI and see if it could get out of that situation. Came back down and he was still doing the exact same thing. It tried to drive through that gap, that Master Chief couldn't have even fit through, for half an hour. I thought that was funny, but they can get pretty damn annoying sometimes.

@Demachine I wouldn't say that it's amazing.. a lot of the AI out there dodge reticles.. even if your sniping with a silencer, 150m away, they've not seen or heard you & they move when you pull the trigger.. my favourite AI is still the original F.E.A.R. that's about 8 years old now

I thought that was an unnecessary amount of blood, but it turns out it's leaves.

@HybridPara: The M-rating Reach is getting might as well stand for moneymaker because there is no foul language in the entire campaign (or so I've heard), and relatively speaking, has very little in the way of gore (no Flood).
If Uncharted can pull a T-rating, Reach could. But it matters little.

I think designing ally AI is a lot more tricky than enemy AI. I can imagine that they don't want the player to be able to sit back and just watch the ally AI tear through everything, but at the same time, they don't want the player to feel like their allies are completely useless.
