Meh. Kids these days and their "reboots" and "HD remakes" and "realistic graphics"

Who needs 'em?

@Mach2

I sure don't. As a matter of fact, I'm going to go out and buy the original right now.

There's nothing whatsoever doubtful..I WILL be buying this.

I've been waiting to see some screens of the reboot/sequel for months now!

Haunted House was and remains as my favorite Atari 2600 game ever. It was the first 'survival horror' game made, too. Yes, kiddies, I'm going back to the Atari VCS 'Heavy Sixer' days.

*entering old geezer mode*
Kids these days don't know how good they have it...
You know what made video games exciting back in the day? Imagination. I remember when my mom bought me Empire Strikes back for the Atari 2600. I kept imagining that eventually there would be something more to the game than repeatedly shooting AT-ATs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIzqKAFV4-s&feature=player_embedded (once in a while a glowing mine would show up on the AT-AT that you could shoot to destroy and occasionally the theme music would start playing and my ship would flash). Or that if I went through enough doors in Berzerk, I would eventually escape that damned maze. Hell I used to play a dungeon crawling game where the monsters were random characters, and by characters I mean A B C D % # and the like! That W became a ferocious werewolf in my mind. You want a metagame? Our metagame was how many times you could flip the score.
Do you know how long I've waited for a Transformers Game that didn't suck? Finally we have a good one in War For Cybertron. You kids should feel fortunate not to know the anguish of hoping that "This one will be the one" (BTW still waiting for a good Superman game).

*snore*

Where was I? Oh yeah...you whipper snappers should be grateful. You could be stuck shooting AT-ATs in an infinite snowfield of a pixelated Hoth.

Hehe, I've played the ESB 2600 game in an emulator and know exactly the feeling you're talking about.

The ASCII characters game you're talking about might be the venerable Castle.exe I have on my computer, dated 1984.

@killdash9 I was more referring to Rogue but there were a bunch of clones that followed the same formula.

While I'm back at this thread I can't help but bring up how many times the box for the game looked WAY cooler than the actual game itself. Nothing is worse than picking up a game that looks incredible on the box anticipating all the way home how awesome it will be. Only to start it up and realize that the actual gameplay is NOWHERE near as exciting as what is portrayed on the box.

@MDizzy
It also really sucked to pick up a game box, look on the back, and see that the IBM-compatible version's screen shots looked so much worse than the Amiga/Apple/Atari ones. . . .

Dang. I remember actually getting scared while playing the original Haunted House. I must have been all of five years old when it came out.

Wow - I had completely forgotten about that game.

Thanks for the memories Joystiq. And thank *you* unnamed-company-capitalizing-on-my-childhood.

I'm definitely buying this as It was one of my favorites as a kid. But my first impression is of disappointment. I think they are missing what made the first so intense. The darkness. It does not appear that this redux will have that same element. I'll just have to wait and see. I hope there's a demo..
