"It turns out that buttons are pretty important. Not like "save the whales" important. More like 'not play games that suck' important. Cuz they help you ... control stuff. Controller. Control. Kinda makes sense. Some people don't think you need buttons. WHAT?! Craziness. Could you imagine gaming without buttons? Where would the control come from?"While there's some reason for concern, this kind of marketing can be interpreted not as playful, but a return to the "arrogant" attitude Sony has been notorious for. Considering Microsoft's Kudo Tsunoda confirmed future games could use the button-y Xbox 360 controller in conjunction with Kinect, this might be an argument Sony won't want to kick up.
Sony launches pro-button, anti-Kinect campaign with yaybuttons.com

Remember when motion-controlled games were simply for old people and children? (We kid!) However, Nintendo's marketing has rarely reached this level of aggression. Sony has launched a new website -- www.yaybuttons.com -- that plays hardball against Microsoft's button-free Kinect experience. By clicking any of the buttons on the virtual PlayStation Move controller, you'll be able to read through a rant from fictional PlayStation VP Kevin Butler:

I'm sure Sony fans will love this, but to the average consumer, even those who might normally consider the PS3, this is does nothing to persuade them to want the Move. It's just taking cheap shots at Kinect, just like Sony took cheap shots at the Wii when it released.
4 years later, and Sony's pushing a complete bite of the Wii's motion controls.
Consumers like technology that reaches for the future. The Wiimote, the Nintendo DS, the Iphone, all of these are examples of technology that reach for the future, all devices offering something that no one else was doing.
The Kinect does the same. No one's doing a a true body controlled interface. If it delivers even 75% of what the idea promises (and Dance Central makes a damn strong case that's possible), it'll sell like hotcakes.
And Sony will end up playing catch up again, just like they're doing with Wii-like motion control now.
Lastly, if Sony wasn't concerned with enthusiasm for Kinect, there would be no need for these kinds of ads. Likewise for their ads against Iphone games.

I don't know why anyone in this thread thinks that an ad campaign based around a bunch of websites is meant for anyone but us. This isn't television. They aren't courting moms and kids with these. They're trying to win over the "hardcore."
The reason they're worried about Apple and Microsoft is that they're doing the same thing. Nintendo does it too, sometimes, but they plainly don't need to. They don't need us.
Microsoft, Sony and Apple obviously feel they do need us. They at least need us to spread the word, and probably to be the early adopters. That's why there's constant talk of "hardcore possibilities" on the Kinect despite the evidence that any currently exist (Child of Eden doesn't require Kinect, so it doesn't count).
This advertising is aimed at us. The only way Sony is trying to influence the "average consumer" with this stuff is through us.

Sony isn't targeting hardcore gamers with this campaign, they're targeting dedicated Sony fans, and that's kind of my point.
Hardcore gamers have already chosen their consoles of choice this generation, be it a 360, PS3 or Wii. If you're a gamer that already has a PS3, you don't really need to be told the Move is for you, because you've likely already been exploring what's coming down the pike. If you're a gamer who has the 360 or the Wii, or both the 360 and the Wii, then the LAST thing you're likely to respond to in an ad campaign is the idea that your console choice "sucks".
This is where Sony is missing the train entirely on this.
Pushing this message will make Sony fans feel great, like they made the right choice, And maybe they will spread the message on, but the message still comes across as "your console (the competition) sucks".
It's like trying to attract bees with pesticide instead of honey.
It's the same message that comes across when you argue that the Kinect has no hardcore possibilities. You say Child of Eden doesn't count because it can be controlled with traditional controls. Which "hardcore game" is Sony going to offer with Move controls ONLY?
Killzone 3? Resistance 3? MAG 2? The next Uncharted?
Are all of these going to be Move control ONLY? I don't think so. So that makes the claim that interesting Kinect experiences like Child of Eden "don't count" pointless beyond saying Kinect/360 "sucks".
Again, not a strong argument for anyone other than the folks already on your side.
If Sony spent more time and money on simply showing off what Move does instead of attacking their competition, they might attract attention and investment from more than just Playstation owners.
People buy the Wii because they like what it offers. People will buy the Kinect or Move because they like what they offer, not because Sony or Sony fans say the competition sucks.

Kinect is the Windows ME, or the Vista for the younger of you for this gaming generation. It will be interesting to see what Microsoft makes AFTER the kinect. That, and it will be what is worth buying, probably.

Oh wow Sony is recycling their anti-iPhone gaming campaign. I expect this will have about the same level of success.
Sony doesn't seem to get the casual gaming market at all. The DS and iPod Touch have eaten the PSP alive with thousands of games that don't use buttons at all.

They're definitely going after the casual market by making fun of casual games. You hit the nail square on the head, there. That is exactly the one thing they are trying to accomplish here: getting your mom to play a PSP on the train to work.

Did anyone even look at that "fireman" site? From what perspective do you think a message like that is supposed to be sent?
They're treating this like they treated Bluray in the early PS3 days: a trojan horse.
This campaign is catering to the "hardcore." The Fireman site wishes to use you, the "hardcore gamer," to convince the "casual gamer" that Move is worth owning, just as Bluray was a selling point for the PS3 to the non-gamer.
Sony believes the "hardcore" want Move. If you look at their tactics, its almost like they're taking an exact opposite approach to waggle-control from Nintendo.
They want Move to be the PS2 of motion control; stemming from the hardcore, and sweeping everyone else. The problem is, Wii swept up everyone else a long time ago.

Yea, too bad the PS3 is now a middle of the pack BD player at best, being surpassed in video and audio quality by players in Sony's own line up. Same way Move is already being surpassed by the next generation of motion controls, we don't need refined WiiMotes at this point in the game.
