Treyarch combating trade-ins by supporting Black Ops multiplayer
114
Developers and publishers have gone to some pretty drastic measures to prevent having their new products put through the Gamestop wash, such as EA's Project Ten Dollar, or Ubisoft's highly controversial "Pre-Owned Smart Bomb," which, upon sensing a player's intent to trade a game in, destroys his or her entire city. However, according to Treyarch's Mark Lamia, the developer hopes to combat resales of Call of Duty: Black Ops by making its multiplayer component positively unquittable.
"We're going to support the hell out of Black Ops," Lamia recently explained to MCV. "That will be our focus post-release: making sure we keep our fans engaged, and hopefully as a result, they'll want to keep playing our game and won't want to trade it in." A noble goal, but people really love trading in their games, guys. We're afraid of how things might escalate if Treyarch fights to keep their wavering attention. "No, wait, don't go," they might say, "now the game has dinosaurs!"

So i understand what the game developers are trying to do but one thing most people don't think of is that when someone purchases a product that said product now belongs to the whomever bought it so if i'm going to sell what i just bought cause i don't want it anymore why should the game developer still make money off of something i own

I hope most people realise this just means four map pacls instead of two.

This tactic worked and worked very well for Burnout Paradise. I held off on trading my copy in for over a year due to DLC packs, both free and pay versions. Criterion's continued support made it attractive to retain, as I'd use it as an excuse to start playing the game again.
If CoD:BO has impressive multiplayer AND good DLC support, I'll probably pick it up and keep it in the drive for a while.

This strategy worked for Trey before. I have friends that have traded in COD:MW2, but still keep COD:WaW. Why? Zombies. We still get together, 2-4 at a time, to play Nazi Zombies.
Red Dead might go this way too.
I'm hoping for Commie Zombies!

Well Treyarch is you release a DLC Expansion, Don't FORCE me to buy it. and I might think about not trading in your game. MW2 got it right, in that you are really given the choice of buying the DLC. Which makes me more apt to buy it. WaW went to opposite in the game became nearly unplayable if you didn't have the DLC, as you were constantly kicked from games since they were in your rotation.

Won't be buying it anyway. COD has really gone downhill. Especially MW2. (I know it wasn't made by the same guys.) I hate using this term, but they all feel like "noob" games to me. It's too fast, twitchy, and arcadey. I realize going too far the other way in terms of realism isn't a good idea either, but this is just not my style. I'm happy for Activision that they have so many hot-selling franchises, but I'll stick with things that actually encourage teamwork.

perhaps if game companies are so against game stop they should give them their support with pre order bonuses. i wont shop at game stop, so unless i get the rare best buy pre order bonus i always miss out, and how bout instead of pre order or at least alongside; a bonus for buying it new. but as is i see the game companies supporting the company that they claim hurts them

I don't really care that publishers are whining about used games. But if they want to "kill" used games what Treyarch is doing is the right way to go about it IMO. Give me a REASON not to want to trade the game in. Publishers also need to give people more of a reason to get it new rather than used. EA's "Project Ten Dollar" isn't a reason to get a game new, it's just a punishment for people who don't get the game new.
If Treyarch's smart what they will do is offer additional maps to people who purchased the game new while people who purchased the game used have to pay for them. If they do this it shouldn't be a one time deal either. They should do it for at least the first couple map packs...and the first DLC maps shouldn't be just an unlock for files already on the game disc.
Publishers need to increase the value of games and then more people will purchase them new. I only purchase games used when it's obvious they aren't worth $60.

Well that's great and all but does anyone know yet if Black Ops is going to have the same stupid player-hosted servers like in MW2? I loved MW2 but all the hacking, goddamn host migrating and booting just killed the experience for me. I know the PC version is getting dedicated servers but what's the deal for consoles?

That's touch talk coming from a game that they know will sell millions just because of the name

$15 map packs that are made up of nazi zombies, and rehashed maps prettified with their improved engine does not count as supporting a game. If you want people to keep playing your game, add new modes, playlists, weapons, and co-op missions. multiplayer maps are great, but not EVERYONE is doing that and I'm sick of paying for it. Feels like I'm getting the shaft on this kind of stuff. How can you have that much content ready for digital distribution and leave so much off the physical media which is $60 from the get-go?

I hope this game succeeds. There was alot of good post-release support from Treyarch that was much appreciated for W@W, although some of the maps weren't great. I'm just just glad they tried unlike some *other* people...

Hopefully this means there will be some free DLC. Even though there won't be... But one could still hope. Supporting the crap out of a game is meaningless if you're going to charge us $15 for your map packs every month.

The only way I plan on getting this game is through pre-owned. Activision will not be getting a cent from me. Same goes with Shattered Dimensions.
