@ClarkyAC John Carmack is disgustingly smart. The man is planning a private trip to the moon AS A HOBBY.

Yes a game or two besides emulators would be nice. I was kinda hoping for some popcap games but whatever.

they need this BADDLY... as of right now the Marketplace is full of dozens of crappy soundboards, App Store rip offs, and horrible overpriced emulators. I owned a Motorola Droid but as awesome as the OS is with the customizability, the apps and games just don't show just how good the OS can be... of course thats because Android is fragmented, one device may not support a app or game but the other can, if they dont put down a requirement like Windows Phone 7 did they are never going to get the kind of sales that apple has seen

@PR0F3TA

i read somewhere they've put minimum-spec-requirements for the gingerbread-release (something about 1GHZ CPU, minimum screensize and so on).

This is good news for android after all.

Also, OS releases will be slowing down to 1 per year like Apple.

Given John Carmack's remarks at QuakeCon when less than 5% of the keynote crowd said they had an Android device (About 90% has iOS devices) I don't think this will see the light of day for some time.

"Maybe in a couple of years, Android will be worth the effort," were his exact words. He said the same thing about Linux, by the way (which he uses for all his rockets and space hobby-things).

Keynote audience != market at-large.

Android OS devices outsold iPhones last quarter, and Android's growth is showing no signs of slowing down.

@britboyj27 iD have always provided a Linux client, Rage maybe the first game they dont provide a Linux client for, but for every game they have been responsible for so far they have provided a Linux client.. In part because us Linux users would host the server side of the online games for a lot of his games.

Looking through his twitter feed:

"I added bash-like saved command history to Rage last month, and it makes me smile when I start the game and up-arrow to the command I need. "

Bash is the GNU shell used in Linux (also adopted and used in OSX)

@einhanderkiller You mentioned "Android OS devices outsold iPhones last quarter". And while true, it doesn't paint an accurate picture for developers.

iOS devices still are outselling Android OS based devices in the US and worldwide. (By activations anyhow, and that matters more on the Android side, since only activated devices tend to be ones capable of accessing the Marketplace). iOS is what most developers target, only a few specifically target the iPhone. For games, might as well target the entire platform.

Also the keynote audience poll was John's way of seeing where Android penetration was in the hard core crowd willing to show up to an event dedicated to his games. For him, it at least gave a rough idea.

Odds are, id is willing to hire some junior guy for a little bit of money to do an experiment. John himself likely won't dedicate a ton of time to the platform for a little longer, until he sees it worth a look. I think after id was burned by the horrible sales of their Linux boxed games, they move much more cautiously into new platforms.

While I'd love to support Id's mobile games again (like the old pre-iPhone days), I'm afraid I've just cut myself off by getting the X10 mini.

Support of multiple screen-sizes? Pretty please?
