It seems that the combination of 3D technology, video game inspiration and the acting chops of Milo Jovonovich ... Milli Jovovonich ... that lady from The Fifth Element proved undeniable for moviegoers this past weekend. Paul W.S. Anderson's latest foray into the world of game movies, Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D took first place in the box office over the weekend, netting $28 million on opening night alone.
That's the best opening for any film in the series so far, but with an estimated budget of $60 million, it's got a little ways to go to break even. But hey -- enough about the monies. Did you see the movie? How was it? And how was Mrs. Jovavonov ... Joovajanavich ... M.J.?

I was forced to go see it Friday. I would rather watch Peter Jackson's King Kong.

I just got back from watching it and I am a fan of the other 3 RE films and I have to say that this newest iteration does indeed suck. It makes no sense at all. No, even less sense than that cause even a lack of sense would be something. This was nothing.
I'm just glad I didn't pay extra to see it in 3D...

I've been gaming for 25 years and I am sad to report: Games are not art.
Not to say that this movie is art, though. A film can be art, just not a movie starring a super model that is in "3-D."
Unless they're both art in the same way Duchamp's 'Fountain' is art.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.
or as the kids say, "pics or it didn't happen."
There are a few older Japanese games I can think of that border on art; stuff like "L.S.D." or "Vib-Ribbon," but the 32-bit era was pretty much the renaissance of gaming, and these days creativity takes a back seat to sales.
As a whole I would say that stuff like "Frontlines: Fuel of War" and "Left 4 Dead 2" kind of cancel out the whole "games as art" aspect of gaming.
Games are more like a toy, but nothing is wrong with toys.

Holy cow you're an idiot.
Art cannot be defined. Art is defined by whatever an individual wishes to define it as. I don't find a black and white photo of someone's face to be art, yet that doesn't stop someone else from seeing it as art and putting it up for display at an art gallery.
If games can't be art because Left 4 Dead exists, then pictures can't be art because Playboy exists.

Actually, there is a definition for art: any man-made work which, through its aesthetic qualities, attempts to communicate the emotions and/or ideas of its creator(s).
By that definition, of course, games obviously have the capacity to be art, and many games are. Whether they're GOOD art or not is another question entirely, and THAT cannot be objectively defined.

lmao every single Res movie sucked, It's no surprise that this one did too lol and to think after this they were SUPPOSED to reboot the series, I hope they do Reboot it and never let Paul W.S. Anderson touch a video game franchise ever again. I only saw it cause I'm a huge fan of Res and saw all the other horrible movies. If you haven't seen it and still want to then I won't say any spoilers, only that they changed everything from the game once again and not in a good way.
oh and Paul W.S. Anderson,
DON'T EVEN THINK OF GOING BACK TO WRITING/DIRECTING CASTLEVANIA. CASTLEVANIA DESERVES BETTER THAN YOU!

Anderson has tainted every franchise he has attempted to make into a movie, in my opinion. I am a huge Aliens fan, and HATED what he did with AvP. The only good thing the man has ever done was Event Horizon. He should just stick to making his own movies not based on any established IP.

except I did enjoy Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, the only good video game based move that didn't go to theaters.... LOL stupid moveon square imo.
I wonder how Metal Gear Solid, Gears of War, Mass Effect, and Castlevania * if they still make it * are going to turn out.

Well not to say Spirits Within was terrible, it wasn't, but Advent Children is what gamers like me LOOK for in movies based off games. I like there to at LEAST be a connection between the story of the game series and the movie. Advent Children was fine..aside from some of the English voice overs being terrible, it at least continued on the story of a great game and didn't really change anything story wise to make it horrible.
From what I've heard about the rumors surrounding Metal Gear Solid they plan to use the story from the PSOne game on Shadow Mosses Island, I think that actually has potential whereas for Gears of War the director wanted The Rock to play Marcus....disaster written all over it.
I can understand your point of view though, Square did totally milk the FFVII series.

Thats why I say as a movie, Spirits Within was better. It was an original story with no tie in to any FF game, and thats why it failed. Because gamers wanted a movie like the games or at least related to one. If it was just called "Spirits Within" instead of "Final Fantasy: Spirits Within", it would've done better just because Final Fantasy fans would be taken out of the word of mouth. Advent Children was a direct sequel to one of the most popular games in the world, and it was done with CG, and was a canon story, and thats why FF VII fans like it. It was pretty much "Watch Cloud be a badass for 90 minutes".

even that was kinda, eh. I didn't like the CGI, looked worse than the video game imo and the acting was eh. would have been better with more detailed realistic looking monsters and zombies and acting but I don't regret watching it. At least it tied in with the Resident Evil story and still definitely worth a watch.

Totally wasn't the best of the four. The first one was the best. It actually had decent suspense and a creepy little girl British computer.
This one actually had game tie-ins which was nice, but the movie didn't make a lick of sense and was pretty boring. They didn't even bother explaining what Wesker's motives were or really who he was (not that the games do much better). But as a stand alone movie it doesn't make any damn sense, the first one at least was cohesive. The second one was a joke, Nemisis would NEVER assist anyone come on. The third wasn't terrible until the ending.

First one had the best story, but as for the quality of the movie...yea, the lickers killed it for me. Afterlife is like Extinction part 2, so if you didn't see the 3rd movie, you're missing some of the plot (some was explained through flashbacks). The movie isn't meant to stand alone, not many sequels are. They don't do recaps in every sequel, it ruins it for people that already know. Afterlife went with the action route (as well as Extinction) just like the games did, hence why the movie used some RE5 elements. It wasn't supposed to be suspenseful, its supposed to be hot chick fights zombies.
Also, Nemesis in the movies is not the same as Nemesis in the games, so GAME Nemesis might noy do that, but movie Nemesis, someone that retained memory and was close to the main character would. You shouldn't go into these movies using the game storyline, if you do, it's your own mistake and its no wonder you don't understand what's going on.

I heard it was a slow-mo/bullet orgy.. Why can't they just copy the games stories to a pin point precision and finally break that barrier which stops game to movie adaptions sucking? Why..why...whyyyyy?!?!? (kudos to the first person to guess the game I referenced..)

Because the game stories in RE anyway are somehow worse than the movie stories. Honestly, most of them are anyway. This most recent movie makes the least sense of all, even less-so than the games. I never thought I'd know more about Wesker in a Capcom written RE game than I would an entire movie where he's the bad guy. Fascinating how they don't bother explaining him AT all in the movie. And he's only in it for about 15 of the 90 minutes which is even more hilarious.
