Direct2Drive offering free Civ 3 with Civ 5 pre-order
14
Let's be honest with ourselves: If you're the kind of person who's pre-ordering Civilization V, you're probably the strategizin' type. You likely called around, made comparisons (maybe even put together a spreadsheet -- we won't judge), and then chose the most strategically fortuituous preorder that you possibly could, finding the perfect balance of cost and value for your money.
But just like all of those late game German Panzers, Direct2Drive is throwing a last-minute wrench in the gears. Preorder Civ V via it, and you'll get immediate and free access to the classic Civ III, the last iteration in the series to stay 2D, largely viewed as one of the best versions of the game. Plus, D2D preorders also get the new game's first bit of Scenario Pack DLC for free.
That's a good deal. Of course, if you want to preorder the new Civ, you probably have the old Civ collecting dust somewhere on a shelf. But you might at least add this deal to your spreadsheet, just to see how it balances out.

That deal's been going for a while I believe. Steam often does sales like that - buy the new game, get the old one in the series for free. Too bad in many cases I already have the old one :)

"one of the best versions of the game"
Weird, since I thought it was regarded generally as the worst in the series. I sure liked it, though.

@Bowlby
I disagree. Have you ever played Civilization: Call to Power?

Call to Power is technically an unrelated game made during the name dispute.
Civ III is the reason I'm not fully on the ball with Civ V. I see all the new features they're adding and remember Civ III did the same thing. Civ III's entire problem was that the new systems completely dominated the game.

I got Civ 4 on the GFWL deal a few weeks ago...I do NOT get this game, lol. Like I thought there would be a campaign or something....but you just set up matches against the AI. Plus, so far I'm terrible at this game. Can't understand why it takes 60 turns sometimes to build a barracks while other times it'll take 20. WTF game...wtf.

Civ3 is only one of the best versions of the game if you add the number 'six' to it. 'Civ3 is one of the six best versions of the game'. :) While some people enjoy Civ3, overall it was panned, including by its creator (Soren Johnson), who came into the game halfway through its production when Reynolds et al. left and didn't know Civ well enough. He corrected that mistake and produced Civ4. :)
Civ 4 had a pack with all previous versions of Civ in it, which was nice. Hopefully Civ 5 will also.

I never thought of CivIII as the best, even when it was sparkly-new, the broken diplomacy model and completely borked-up Vet Spearman v. Panzer Tank .... Winner: Spearman! stuff made it little more than a holdover. At least with Civ IV:BtS we got early espionage and trade caravans back--which made it closer to CivII (which, IMO, is the real classic)
If I get the D2D offer (which, as others have pointed out, isn't New News, but hey -- people ought to know and the offer's still out there, right?) it will be for the free out-of-the-gate expansion, and not a version of the game I'm not particularly fond of.
