Users report Halo: Reach disc read errors
61
Several tipsters have reported that Halo: Reach may be plagued with the dreaded "disc read error" problem. It seems that some users are greeted either with a disc read error or a frozen screen when inserting the disc. Installing the game onto the hard drive apparently does not ameliorate the issue. Based on what Bungie forum users are reporting, the problem appears to be related to hardware, as a disc might not read in one console, but will work properly in another.
The cause of the problem hasn't been uncovered. In the meantime, Bungie advises those affected to call Xbox customer support (1-800-4-MY-XBOX) to report the issue. We've contacted Microsoft and will update this post when more information becomes available.
Update: Microsoft has responded, saying, "We are aware of a very small number of customers reporting that their copy of Halo: Reach is causing a "disc read" error." The company advises players to call customer support for "troubleshooting assistance."
[Thanks, Corey!]

Bummer, dude. I've been playing the heck out of this game, with no problems whatsoever. Glad my disc is working fine in my new slim.

Might be older consoles that have the problem.

I have an original console (like Day 1 original, no RROD ever), and it works perfect for me, already passed the campaign, played online and even had a nasty 4 player firefight lag-fest with 3 friends & about 50 elites at once in a small room. No disc read errors.
It has to be more hardware related or bad copies, it shouldn't be a surprise; just that Halo is so famous that we hear about it.

Man, that would suck.
Waiting all this time for the new Halo game and then having it fail on you.
Anyway, stay strong, friends. They'll get it fixed. :)

Yes it does suck...
As well when your report the issue (like I did) they offer to replace your 360 even if it is out of warranty. When I called they claimed that the firmware in the 360 needed to be updated by them, why it couldn't be done over Live is beyond me.

Probably an issue with the dvd drive firmware and not the system itself and it only affects a small subset of drive models. Also it's probably not easy to do it reliably over live since it might risk incapacitating the drive and/or bricking the console.
But that's just my theory anyway.

The system actually still checks the disk on startup when you play off the HDD to combat easy piracy, so it would make sense if there was an issue with the optical drive having some issue recognizing the disk in general. Still - good luck on the repair. The game is still worth the wait.

I had this issue, tried it over 30 times and it wouldnt read after a full day of playing with no issues.. then as a last ditch effort i set the 360 Vertical,
Since i have had the 360 vertical i installed the game and kept it up right..no issues in a couple days since i did that
Let hope it stays that way

Happened to me launch night. Put it in, and it wouldn't get past the startup video. After showing the planet Reach it just froze. Said it couldn't read my disc. I installed it on my hardrive... and its been working fine ever since.

That's no good. I would be soooooo bummed out. Doesn't help matters when one person has launch hardware and it runs fine and another has a new slim and it runs fine on. *see above...somewhere*
This is what we call a clusterphuk. Hope the affected can get their Haloz on soon. For cereal, I'm "reaching" out to you in sympathy right now.

I'm sure it's an isolated problem, when u sell more then half a million copies of a game in one day you don't expect all of them to be 100% working.

This reminds me of the problems with ODST, supposedly they claim the game doesn't work properly in older xbox consoles with X DVD drive, and X whatever bs... like, mine. :[ Making the game unplayable.

Well I can think of one media replication plant that's never working in this industry again. Everyone makes mistakes but you'd imagine some degree of QA for a flagship release like this.

Oh Dammit! I tried playing Reach on Launch and it didn't work. Turned out, when I tried other dics NONE of my games/DVDs worked (They previously did). The disc drive quit spinning discs, I'm wondering if Reach may have screwed up my Disc drive (Causing other discs to not work?). Seems like more than a coincidence that everything works fine, I try Reach then nothing works at all. . .If that's even possible?
Either way, totally awesome having to send my 1 month old 360 Slim 250gb in to Microsoft for repairs. Especially on the launch of Reach! /sarcasm
360 currently in transit to Texas. Hope this doesn't take more than 2 weeks.

Did you use the eject button to power on the console? Both of my older model 360s wont read disc after hitting eject to power on the console. I have to pull the power cable for 20-30 secs and it works fine again

No, I use the power button. I did all the trouble shooting myself (Then MS support made me do it all over again >_>) and they deemed it a hardware problem (As I kept my HDD since it didn't seem to be a corrupted data problem).

My buddy's Halo 3 edition Box wouldn't even acknowledge the disc until I did about 5 open tray/close tray cycles. Then it worked just fine.
Same disc works in my roommate's new as of last December Elite model every time.

Count me in as as a user having problems...however it decides when it wants to happen either I get a disc read error or it just can't matchmake or cant get past a video sequence and loops the sequence over and over...reported to tech support they hadn't acknowledged anything...

Beat the game twice without any incidents or choppyness/slowdowns. This is all on a Launch Console that has never given me issues and I game daily. :) - Did hear a few gamestop's had unreadable copies shipped out.
