You've already heard about the new stuff coming to Gran Turismo 5, but Sony's uploaded a couple new trailers that better show off the X1 Prototype and weather effects -- both are past the break. Finally, we can all crash expensive cars in the snow like real rich people!
Is there any definitive source to find out how much 3-D this game will have? I have a full 3-D entertainment system and want to buy this game, but not if the 3-D is limited to one small section of the game.
@Muckrak3r Because there's so much other 3D content you could get instead?
You bought a testing station. All 3D content will be in its infancy for a couple years if it takes off. So, don't expect much and certainly don't let 3D be the main point of any purchase. With gaming you can turn it on or off so just buy a game if its good.
Movies are a different story, perhaps, but even then there's not much of that content out now, if any.
No I am not a huge racing game fan, but I am a sucker for all things 3-D. That's why I have thousands invested in my 3-D setup.
If the game offers minimal 3-D, I will probably not buy it. Don't hate.
I was just hoping ANYONE, ANYWHERE, could point me to information regarding what is actually 3-D about this game. Amazon is listing it as one of the few upcoming full retail 3-D releases for the PS3. So I would like to know if I can race in 3-D like on the Motorstorm game, or if it's only in some small sample section of the game.
P.S: I read your comment and the sad replies you got, so I've been trying to dig this link for the past 15 minutes, damn college computers don't help at all ~.~
It's worth noting though that the stance on GT5 was written during E3, before the weather effects were in place. I wouldn't be surprised if some of those effects (such as rain and snow) turned out to make the experience even more impressive in 3D
That face tracking thing seems pretty cool... but then I realized, if you turn your head to the right or left you won't be able to see the screen. haha Unless you only have to move your head a little bit to get the side view. lol
from the link you gave it says this "By moving your face parallel to the screen, you can change your point of view (field of view), adding to the immersive feeling that you are driving inside the car."
so isn't that like rocking left and right? you're not exactly turning your head, so at least you can see the screen, but it's not exactly realistic/intuitive then. i'm not sure whether this is good or bad or meh?
Does anybody else not care about the X1? For starters it's just another made up car, and if it was truly designed without rules in mind it would be much more wild looking and too fast for any of us to comprehend.
Racing games have had 'ultimate' cars for years, but they never made a big deal of it.
Otherwise, GT5 looks awesome and if my housemate didn't already have a PS3 I'd sell my 360 for it.
@Tickers Well the X1 was designed by Adrian Newey. He has a history of designing dominating cars, more so this year with Red Bull in F1. Seeing as F1 is considered the ultimate car, and Newey is both an aerodynamicist and designer, he could easily make something even better.
@BtheCarp I really doubt Adrian spent much time on this. Polyphony probably came up with the car and asked him a couple of questions about things he liked or things he'd do differently. Maybe they asked him a few questions about aerodynamics.
F1 isn't the pinnacle of what's possible, it just has such a strict set of rules that the cars must be extremely well developed. There is so much that is limited. In a truly unlimited world engines would be bigger and more powerful (and probably not a standard NA piston engine), underbody aero would be exploited further, tyres would be hugely wide and electronics would be everywhere. It would be unlike anything seen before.
The X1 looks like a game designer's idea of an ultimate car, not Newey's.
@Tickers Keep in mind GT isnt so much about the look of the cars as it is what's under the hood. When they talk about a car being built without the restrictions, they're talking about fuel intake, exhaust, weight ratios, gear boxes. It might look like any other formula car to some extent but it's engine is probably just short of running on dilithum crystals.
The rain effects look too "liney" if that makes sense. Needs more swoosh.
The snow effect on the windshield, however, is incredible. I wonder if while playing, you get the same "I'm in a rocket ship in outer space going a zillion miles per hour" feeling as you do in real life.
I dunno, I actually preferred the rain to the snow, I like rain that makes me feel comfortable sitting or standing in a sheltered place, in a car car, looking thorough the wind-shield or some other shooting game / rpg standing about enjoying the weather conditions. But I tend to find some games don't make it feel the same way that real rain feels when you are warm and inside, this however, looks spot on :D
@Enosoma I also thought the rain was better than the snow. however, since it's an animation I can only hope they made a couple so it doesn't become pedestrian.
Also, the snow being kicked up behind the cars while they were driving is laughable. Freaking hilarious, even. It's so terrible. It's something you'd see on the PS1 and N64. They could have at least put a filter over the environment to mimic the fine dust of snow that can be ejected.
Or better yet, just do wet snow that kicks up similar to mud only more snow-like.
So, it's good, but nothing fantastic when you actually consider what it is. Although I do appreciate their efforts. I'm just not ready to gush over it.
After reading your comment, i went back and watched the video again. Sorry, but you are just being an overly detailed DOUCHE. I couldn't detect any "LAUGHABLE QUALITY" to the snow trails.
You'll see that it's not just a simple animation, but actually corresponds to the density and direction of the wind, rain, and car vector. It is, without question, the best rain effect I've ever seen in a game (of any description).
@Enosoma Now that I've seen it a few times, I wouldn't say they got the animation wrong. It looks great. I guess race drivers would apply Rain-X liberally.
WOW! Those rain effects look awesome! The first video really shows the in game view and it's very realistic. are they going to have a wheel/game bundle? I might have to sit that close to my TV for that kind of immersion, just like in the videos. Looks very, very impressive.
Lol, I noticed the crowds, the trees didn't look too bad, I guess with car beauty, they sacrificed environmental beauty. After all, you expect environmental beauty more in RPGs then racing games for example :)
physical location weather would be a great feature, Considering every that GT has to offer, some real time weather effects cant be that hard to implement, I wouldnt think. Fingers crossed.
Other than the trees and spectators, everything looks absolutely beautiful.
Not entirely sure what's the deal with the spectators, they did the two plane thing with trees in GT4 and it really doesn't bother me, but even GT4 had actual modes for spectators (and photographers who'd run onto the track). I can only imagine that they'll be in the final release, but still...
@Chazzr If you've played any of the demo versions they've released since the PS3 came out you'll notice that all the crowds are 3d polygonal characters so your assertion that they look like cardboard is faulty. They're not going to look photo realistic through because that would be spending too much processing power on something you're not going to pay much attention to when you're blowing past it at 140 miles per hour. Trees are debatable, some would say the effect looks fine others won't but you'll never be able to please everyone with Crysis quality trees in a game where they're not the priority and will again be something that whips past you at hundreds of miles per hour.
Some of the complaints are funny. Bitching about the fact you slept with a hot model, but wish she would of wore Versace instead of Gucci. Like I'll be looking at the crowd when I have to break a line at 180mph while fending off 4 drivers on an S curve.
