Well, the marketing officially just worked. That is so weird, that I went back and watched the trailers and read the old stories on this, as I had skipped past them originally.

"psychedelic third-person action game based on the Bible's Book of Enoch"

The Book of Enoch, while awesome and in fact pretty psychedelic in its own right, is not part of any actual modern canon, or as far as I know, any recorded historical one. It belongs to a class of literature referred to as pseudepigrapha -- generally books written at a (relatively) late period but which are attributed to ancient writers.

While these texts are not canonical, they often present mythological or theological concepts that are relevant to contemporary and later religious developments -- for example, the modern notion of the devil is almost entirely foreign to the depictions of satan in the bible, but clearly related to the content of pseudepigraphic works like Enoch.

Considering this was already discussed in the last post, I'm really surprised they chose to use the phrase "the Bible's Book of Enoch." I do applaud you for saying a little bit more on the matter, though. I wasn't aware there was an actual word to describe what this is considered. Kudos!

When I pointed this out on the last thread, I was roundly shouted at because, after all, its ridiculous to expect people in western society to know basic things about western society.

But yeah, interesting book indeed. It isn't so trippy if you understand the mindset of ancient Jewish apocalypse, but then, not many do :)

It would read as Luciper if it was Filipino. We have a P and F syndrome (some of us interchange the pronunciation of the two), it's the Japanese who gets their R's into L's.

The more you know! :D

FYI, there is no "Bible's Book of Enoch" and this game is not "Bible-themed." The Book of Enoch is an ancient Jewish text but it's not part of the Torah (or the Christian Old Testament).

I'm somewhat surprised that they're spending so much time obviously researching this game and then use a variant of Lucifer... which is just a name that sprung up from mistranslations.

Oh well! Game seems neat.

I came on to my favorite website and read an article about a video game blue jean crossover. I spent my personal time reading an article about blue jeans inspired by a crazy jappanese game based on biblical characters. No matter how I try and understand why I did this thing, I can not help but to believe that this proves I am indeed of russian descent. We eastern europeans love those blu jeans!

I don't know about you guys, but if you have heard the story of Enoch, this whole game doesn't make any sense at all. Enoch was a man that was so close to God, that through Him he was able to stop sinning and was taken straight to heaven. I just don't get why they would have him running around with the devil. Just some food for thought.

Well, if they've managed to add a twist to the original story rather than just leaving it untouched, I'd say that's very much a good thing. I'd never heard of Enoch before the press for this game, but it seems like an interesting story. As for the devil, there are many interesting ways to view his role in the Abrahamic belief systems. Consider that even Jesus ran around with the devil for a little bit, and not entirely to his detriment, if I understand that story correctly.

Anyway, I'm rambling, but my main point is if the game makes you wonder why pious Enoch is hangin' with Satan, it's probably doing a good job!

Sounds like you're thinking about the story of Enoch in the bible. The Book of Enoch, which is not part of the bible (see comments above), contains some of the earlier stories of fallen angels (the "watchers" -- think Ben Affleck in Dogma), which are later folded into the overall mythology of the devil in Judeo-Christian culture.

Remember, in the old testament, "satan" is more a job title (referring to a sort of prosecuting angel) or a class of beings than a specific entity. This role was elaborated and expanded (attributing some of god's acts to it/them) in some books composed around the same time as the Book of Enoch, and the (separate) idea espoused in Enoch that some angels had fallen and were thus acting against the interests of god was also gaining popularity.

In both cases, this seems to be a function of people growing uncomfortable with the idea of the god of the bible doing some of the really harsh things that are depicted there -- so folks were looking for a heavenly source for evil that was separate from the god they worshiped. These ideas took hold most strongly in Christian circles, although there was a great deal of controversy for quite a long time within Christianity over them. (Have you ever looked at a gnostic creation myth?)

Of course, that all being said, we're talking about a Japanese video game interpretation of the Book of Enoch, so it's going to bear at most a tangential relationship to the source material. I mean, have you ever seen some of the things that happen to religious literature when it gets turned into anime? : )
