Is there a reason he keeps going completely invisible after getting hit? I haven't gotten very far into the original myself, but I'm pretty sure he's just supposed to flash transparent, not stay that way.

The whip has changed from the original. The sprite of the whip here remains mostly above the head of the player while it moves further backwards in the original. This allowed for complex combat tactics involving attacking enemies while you were turned away. Unless the hitbox on the whip sprite is larger than the sprite itself, I'm seeing a very big gameplay change.
