Remember that Tomb Raider reboot that was rumored last year? The one with a younger, less experienced Lara Croft? According to Eurogamer, the latest issue of PC Gamer says that the new Tomb Raider is indeed a reality. The game will reportedly be set on a Japanese island and will offer Lara an open world to explore, described as one "cohesive level with multiple ways around the puzzles."
The magazine also reiterates that Lara will be "younger and inexperienced in the ways of raiding tombs." Eurogamer believes that this next Tomb Raider is slated for a holiday 2011 release on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
Given the larger, open world and Lara's inexperience, allow us to suggest a title: Tomb Raider: Extended and Unraided.

I gotta agree. I don't see how open world will help Tomb Raider. The problems the last few tomb raider games have had will remain. If the controls are sloppy, if Lara doesn't control well, and if the camera gets in the way.. people won't buy it.
If you're going to copy a game, copy Uncharted. Don't try to copy GTA. :P

Didn't you get to play as a young Lara in Tomb Raider 3? And what does playing as a "young, inexperienced" Lara mean? Does she not know how to climb a ledge by doing a handstand on the edge yet?

Perhaps the young, naive Lara will still believe that you'll get more accuracy shooting one gun at a time as opposed to two. Oh, the silly little goose! She will learn.

Maybe it'll be an obtainable power-up. The same way Samus needs a special power to stick her freaking arm out and grab a ledge.

I think by "open world" they actually mean that it's going to be a metroidvania game, which is actually pretty exciting seeing as both the latest Metroid and Castlevania games have gone in completely new routes.

When I hear them describe the series' new open world as a "cohesive level with multiple ways around the puzzles", Arkham Asylum comes to mind.
Been meaning to play the past... what - three games since the old PlayStation 1 days, but I never got around to them.

So younger Lara...please don't let her boobs be small, those are helpful in gameplay, you know, physics while climbing and using ropes to swing

I think you played as a young Lara in Legend. What is this all about?
Last good Lara Croft game was over a decade ago, wake me when they find a competent developer.

@honkyjesusownsu You played as a younger Lara for about half a level. I would guess that the game the article is talking about would be after that time period.

How many freaking times are they going to redo her?
There reaches a time when a game character is played out, and no matter how many refreshes you give them, it won't revitalize the character to it's former days.
Tomb Raider has reached that part. You aren't going to recapture Lara Croft's glory of the first few releases. It's done, it's over with. Part of the entire reason the series was so popular in the original game was because the style of game was new. It combined puzzles with 3D platforming. This isn't new anymore. You need to do more than just that. Open world? Oh, great, you are going to make a half-assed attempt at something that's popular now.
You don't keep putting out games, have it not be a major hit, and say "Hey, if we redo the character design again, and set it in a different part, maybe it'll do better, right?"
Try making an actual new game. Stop reusing the same stuff over and over again. The remake was good, but the rest, "Oh no, Lara's dead and not coming back, until we make 15 more sequels about her past", give it a rest.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO
Why is everything "open world"? I don't have time to go find the next mission. Fooling around in an "open world" is cool for about 30 minutes.
I bet there will probably be a lot of third person shooting in it like Uncharted too. They should make it more like Prince of Person Sands of Time. Focus on puzzle solving and make it a quality game that Underworld wasn't. Tomb Raider means nothing to the kids today that just want to shoot people in the head. At least please your older audience that keeps buying the Tomb Raider games.
The truth is that it doesn't really matter what they make Tomb Raider into because it will still sell the same.

@FriedConsole There's been a recent shift away from open world gaming, if Mass Effect 2 was any indication. Hopefully this is a minor misstep and one which Square-Enix Europe will correct in a sequel.
Also... does anyone even care about Boobs Raider anymore? She's so 1996. If you're going to bring back the poster children of stone-aged 3D gaming, you might as well release another Crash Bandicoot and Battle Arena Toshinden.

Honestly, with Just Cause 2, Read Dead, and AC2 sitting on my shelf unfinished, I've got to take a break from open world / sandbox games. I have a terrible habit of losing interest in them.

I call bull****. For one thing, it's a 'news source' pulling from another 'news source' without actually providing any context for the quote they provide. Secondly, the game hasn't even been officially announced yet, so why would they be giving out details like that? No way that it's official. Gameinformer picked this up as well, and I think they have it right. This is simply nothing more than a rumor being sold as actual news.
