Famitsu has some new videos of Mega Man Universe showing off the game's character and level creation utilities. The videos demonstrate several custom Mega Men, each with different abilities, as well as a custom level being built. All in all, megafying your world looks pretty easy. See it after the break.
I think I would have preferred an 8-bit retro style more then this art-style, but man.. this game looks like a MUST have. I'm assuming there will be a way to share created content?
If I was wearing any pants, I would've soiled them.
Yeah, it's just personal preference, really. I grew up with the 8-bit Mega Man games. It's just the nostalgia factor. I can understand why they went with a more modern look, while still keeping some of the classic things intact. This way they can do more with it and draw from all the different games.
Either way, this looks like a game I'd be picking up. It would be amazing if someone would re-create all the old Mega Man games on it too.
@Mr Esc is the namesarcasm is my I think the super deformed, cutesy style is what killed Powered Up. Megaman was already "cute" to begin with (at least, in regards to the Japanese, Astro Boy-esque art), and that was just overkill.
My only disappointment with it was that "Classic Style" wasn't just the NES game, but with Oilman and Timeman added in (which I believe was the original intent of the mode, if memory serves me right).
The widescreen mode may actually be a detriment to the presentation, as the screens look sparse. Let's all keep our fingers crossed that this has the fun factor of the last couple Mega Man games.
@PR0F3TA they wouldnt give you a level editor if you weren't going to be allowed to share it. with the popularity of LBP and modnation racers as well as... er, well I supposed there must be some form of shared content game on the xbox that's popular, not to mention Megaman Power'd up's level editor, it seems like these would the likely inspiration.
@Fromps I thought it was a weird choice from the beginning to even use that horrible art for the US version, now it's hilarious that they not only brought it back but that they also redrew that version for the downloadable games 9 and 10.
I also find it interesting that they're making a distinction between Megaman and Rockman now, Since this is the japanese version of the game we're looking at yet they still refer to it as Megaman universe instead of Rockman universe and even have 2 separately named characters in the game.
@Mach2 Yeah, definitely Roll, just a different artstyle that was created for this game (look at how Dr. Wily looks or how "Megaman" differs from "Rockman").
@ToastyToasy My fear though is that with this being based heavily on MM2 that we're going to be subjected to hundreds of DLC updates to the game to get more characters or level components rather than giving use a complete experience that stands alone. I hope this doesnt try to pull us into micro-transaction hell just to get us to pay 70 bucks over the course of a year rather than just selling us a $60 game up front with all the trimmings and adding extras like Dante or even Viewtiful Joe later.
@Mixer23 nope. this game looks like ass. i'm a total mega-man fan, but i'm not sold on this one at all. bad art, and a boring level creator aren't what this series needed at all, as far i'm concerned.
I wouldn't hate it as much if they went with one or the other, but mixing goofy 3D characters with flat looking pixel levels isn't doing it for me either.
So... this is basically Megaman Powered Up 2 for consoles. I would've rather have it continue on PSP, I mean, on a portable system the graphics wouldn't have looked so lame... but I kinda get their idea to try and get mo' money out of it.
@(Unverified) I'm not sure if it's simply MMPU2, especially since the character art style doesnt match the cuteness of the PSP game. Yeah it has a level editor but beyond that it's probably a whole new creation. Power'd up felt like they were trying to recreate the universe from scratch (or maybe it just still bugs me that they called him by the wrong name.)
But if it's the spiritual successor to it then it's probably being moved to consoles due to the rampant PSP piracy rather than anything else.
As a huge Mega Man fan who has beaten every game except the gamecube / GBA / DS RPG titles, I am disappointed by Mega Man Universe. With a name like that, and the epicness of the original teaser trailer... it just does not live up.
Hey Joystiq, it'd be awesome if we could actually WATCH your videos.

Viddler seems to have a problem serving up the videos you posted, and it seems to have been this way for a while except usually refreshing the screen 2 or 3 times get the vids to load, but this time it just wont at all. I'm using Firefox BTW.
I don't know if once on my PS3, fun factor would be able to make me forget this UGLY visual style. Honnestly, what the art director was thinking!!! It looks like those cheap games from back in the time that wanted to look REALISTIC. It doesnt feel megaman.
