There's a thought that's been lodged in our mind ever since we saw Christopher Nolan's psychological action-heist blockbuster, Inception: "Man, all these layers of unreality would make for a pretty great video game." Now, we're not sure if that idea came to us naturally, or if it was smooshed in there by a small crew of impossibly attractive heroes, but we don't seem to be the only ones who had it -- Nolan recently voiced his desire to turn the film's universe into a video game during a Rome press conference.
"[What] we are looking at doing is developing a videogame based on the world of the film, which has all kinds of ideas that you can't fit into a feature film," Nolan explained. "That's something we've been talking about and are looking at doing long term, in a couple of years." That sounds promising, but we feel compelled to inform Mr. Nolan that Tim Schafer and Double Fine beat him to the punch, like, five years ago.
Still, the film's impressive take at the box office ($753 million so far) might give an interactive follow-up a large, interested audience. Oh, and the fact that a game wouldn't be pressured into launching alongside a movie (this one would be years late!) would be the source of more ... optimism than usual.

I didn't get to see it but I heard it's great. Nolan should get David Cage (Heavy Rain) to assit him w/ the game. It could be cool.

Yeah, Christopher Nolan hasn't quite figured out he's been beaten to the punch on this one.

If Nolan himself is involve then I would have no problem; I doubt he would fall into the trap of "Let's make it based on the movie's plot LOL!"
The right way to do a game based on a movie is to make it about events not covered in the movie... maybe other extraction jobs from before the movie? Or even easier, a different team that does jobs after the movie.

@Chazzr Why would the movie be affected by a game? If the game sucks then don't play it and move on.

Dare I say it, Inception might very well have made a better video game than it did a movie.

The game's co-op could be pretty cool. 8 players on the team start off at Level 1. The team must reach a certain waypoint in order for the team to progress to the next dream level. One or more people gets left behind of course.
If the dream person dies, then everyone in the lower levels lose as well. So there's a lot of pressure for players who are left behind to stay alive.
I can also see one player being able to manipulate the dream world during gameplay, in a kind of Little Big Planet / Garry's Mod way. But there's a trade off. The more you manipulate the world, the more dangerous the Projections become (I think that's what they were called).
And of course, it'd be cool if environmental actions in higher dream levels affect the lower levels. You fall off a ledge in one level, your teammates in a lower level start playing in a Low Gravity mode. You dive into a pool of water, and your teammates are suddenly in a flood.
Could be really annoying if not done right though.

The fact that time is sped up significantly in lower levels of the dream wouldn't make that work too well.

That's true. Personally I would hope the game devs would just ignore the time acceleration aspect of the movie to make the game work with multiple dream layers.

Please don't. I loved the movie Inception. But you hardly ever see a good video game that's based on a movie.
Posted: Sep 23rd 2010 1:00PM Zolroy said
@greggermyster Ah but there's no saying it will be based on the movie itself.
If Nolan wanted a quick cash in game he would have done so right away and put out a garbage pile.
But the fact that hes thinking about this afterwords shows he wants to put some thought into.
So this very well could, and very well probably, will be its own original storyline set within the designs and constructs of the movies universe, but not totally based on the movie.
And that'll be juuuuust fine.

I hope they go through with it. Really enjoyed the film and thought it'd make a perfect game.
Also.. I wish they'd remake Enter the Matrix. I haven't played it, but from reading the reviews, the game was not finished in time for its release. It'd be great if they could go back and do the game justice.
The Matrix films are a classic set of films. If you can have EA make games for Godfather I and II , I think Enter the Matrix deserves another try. Plus, that game was so integrated into the Matrix Reloaded film. It's a big shame to see the film attached to such a crummy game. (The movie wasn't super great, but still...)

my thoughts exactly. I think David cage could make this an incredible game to play and as intriguing as theovie itself. Great multiplayer and even mmo potential along with level creator and sharing.

If done properly, it could really be amazing. I'm way too jaded on movie licensed games though to expect anything other than a phoned-in third person shooter.
