Netflix launches in Canada, console access detailed

Movie service Netflix is ready to serve the Great White North. Shacknews reporter Xav de Matos (former Joystiqer, still Canadian) notes the service is currently available on PS3 and Wii, with the Xbox 360 version rolling out later.

PS3: Available now. It's an application, so no disc is required (unlike the States). However, users have no ability to create an instant watch queue.
Wii: Available now. Disc from Netflix.ca required. Also, no ability to build an instant watch queue.
Xbox 360: Coming "soon."

The streaming-only option for Canada costs $7.99 a month and also includes access through PCs and Apple devices.

@DrChristopher To all US users. Just download the app with a Canadian PSN ID. Then switch back to your American PSN ID and launch the Netflix app. It works, you just need to input your email and password for Netflix and looks better than the menu on the disk. No more disk loading ever.

yes all the stuff you can watch in the US you can watch with the app and it has search as well it's much speedier than the disc too

So basically it's a ghetto version of what we here in the states use. That sucks for them.

Yeah... it's sad, but we're used to it by now... We tend to get stuff that's more expensive, doesn't work quite as well... and we get it a few years late. Yeah Canada!

@Liquidfox00 Seriously do the trial before deciding. There isn't a lot of current stuff on there yet. Plus you'll still be paying up the ass in net fees do to bandwith limits. Right now it's still cons > pros.

let him cancel his HBO and Cinamax and when he finds out that Nexflix instant doesn't carry all the great movies he thinks it does he may think it wasn't such a good idea

@PR0F3TA HBO and company doesn't get new releases until months after the films are already on disc. So with Netflix, you're still able to get new releases quicker and cheaper if you go with the mail+instant options.

eh, those responders are being overly critical. netflix instant has a huge selection - i'm never without something i want to watch, and have about 300 movies in my 'instant' queue. Use your disc based rental to get the newer stuff, and you're set.

Canada seems to only have the streaming option

I am a proud canadian(do not live there anymore) but we always seem to get things late. Why dosen't nintendo pay attention to the second biggest country in the world?

@HasteMakesWaste because Canada makes up of 0.5% of the world's population compared to China(19%+), India(17%+), US(4.5%+).

@Myv Canada is 10th in the world in GDP, so we have a tonne of money to spend.

I wonder will the Netflix app be downloadable like Hulu+ or we'll receive an update and it'll just appear?

I hope an search option will be there for US users as well or will that be an 360 exclusive too. Lol.

PS3 Netflix already has a Search option. Just press left on the d-pad when Netflix boots up and shows your Instant Queue.

Selection seems very limited compared to the US. They need to get this figured out.
