Kingdom Hearts 3DS development underway, to follow Re:Coded

Fans eager for a new Kingdom Hearts console game will have to wait even longer, it seems. In an interview with Famitsu, designer Tetsuya Nomura revealed that the next game in the franchise will be the 3DS game, first unveiled at E3 earlier this year. "Next is Kingdom Hearts 3D," he told the magazine. "The time frame for 3D is after Re:Coded."

According to Nomura, development is already underway on the project and will only accelerate once the Final Mix team is done working on that Japan-only PSP release. "We'd like to announce it as soon as possible," Nomura said of the 3DS game, seemingly ignoring the fact that he was technically announcing the game as he spoke.

As said on every Kingdom Hearts article. The team that does the console versions is the team working on FF Versus XIII, they announced when it is nearing the final stages of development they will start work on Kingdom Hearts III.

It has a type of gameplay that feels very "portable".
But no arguing in releasing it on a home console here.

hasn't this been made clear like a billion times. The Kingdom Hearts team has been working on FF Versus XIII and thus, cannot work on KH3 at the moment. Hmm, maybe I should repeat this a couple more times:

So he announced a game while simultaneously not announcing it. This guy is as genius!

I'm not even so annoyed at KH3 not even being announced. I'm more annoyed at SE's insistence on recycling the same venues from KH I & II in EVERY KH spin-off (save for Birth by Sleep). We've seen Traverse Town, Agrabah, and Olympus Coliseum how many times now? I've been there done that, SE! Man up!

Kingdom Hearts 3........DS? Square Enix is getting people's hopes up here.

Here's what I keep wondering. Can future Kingdom Hearts games really star Sora since Haley Joel Osment (voice of Sora) has grown up and no longer sounds child-like? I hate switching voice actors, but Kingdom Hearts with an adult Sora seems.. strange?

He can probably still do the voice even though he is older. He had a voice acting role in KH:BBS, so that would seem to imply that they aren't intent on replacing him.

I'm sure they'll cover it the same way they did between KH1 and KH2 - Have the character age.

@Kenaf He already did the voice of Sora in Re: CoM, honestly it wasn't too distracting, it'd be more distracting if it were someone else.

Btw, just beat Re: CoM last night, the hardest KH I've ever played, maybe even hardest game, PERIOD. Freakin' TROLLED.

It's all too obvious that we wont have anything at all on KH3 until after we get at the very least a release date on Versus XIII, which the main Kingdom Hearts team is working on right now.

Now for all of you that didn't get it, Birth by Sleep, the latest KH game was just released for the PSP. It's Kingdom Hearts 0, it's as big, if not longer than KH1 and 2, nearly the same graphics with a whole lot of work behind it. IT'S NOT A SPIN OFF. IT'S A MAIN TITLE.

Also worth noting is the fact that KH3 will definitely be a console title. Nomura said so himself in an interview recently.

I remember when the first KH came out, I had that song on my mp3 on repeat for weeks, good memories.

Seeing as this takes place after KH2, and seems to be a full-fledged release unlike Coded, there remains the possibility that this is, in fact, KH3.

I'll admit I have never been a huge Kingdom hearts fan. Nothing wrong with the series or anything, it just never really clicked with me.

This does look interesting and the 3DS is almost a guaranteed buy, I'm just worried there will be a bunch of back story to catch up on.

@Scuffles I'm a fan and I've played every KH game and the story still confuses me at times. It has gotten only more convoluted with additions like 358/2 Days.

Yeah, as far as I can tell no one can follow the story without written aid. Either their own notes or websites. Which is funny, considering the target audience originally was youth under 16. It's easily one of the most confusing overall storylines I've followed ever. It makes Lost look like a simple "Save the princess!" tale. (well I guess it was, swap princess for island)

Makes no sense for kingdom hearts 3 to be on 360. Some people might be clueless as to the storyline. But some could also say the same for mass effect.

Ah yes better play it safe instead of doing something awesome and bring it too the big consoles , it seems that mister Keiji Inafune from capcom has a point as hees says japanesse developpers are few years behind .

Oh well its square enix what did we aspect wonders?

Personally I think games are better on handhelds lately. I have a significant backlog between my DSi and PSP. My consoles its easy to skip games on. They're all FPS titles or open world games. Or Open world FPS's... That gets boring, especially when they're rush jobs and unpolished turds (oh, hai there Two Worlds 2!).

For something to be fun it has to be HD? That's a shitty gamer mentality. But i guess you're right, HD DOES make it more fun, and a handheld title could never be captivating. /snicker

Coming up next in 2013: Kingdom Hearts DX ' (that's a dash) Duocedim Z 3D, featuring another 10 dudes in black capes. Waku waku!

Just make KH3 and call it done already, god dammit. Stop toying with my emotions - and patience.

Hmm, potentially not related, but something I'd like to see in future KH titles is more emphasis on the Disney side of things. I feel that the series is focusing too much on the angsty melodramatic clusterscrew part of KH and not the whimsical light-heartedness that KH1 got right. Not saying that the former is a bad thing, but it does get to be a bit too much at times.

Then again, I could be wrong on this. KH has a fanbase that's so divided that any change or non-change made to the formula will cause an uproar.

If Kingdom Hearts 3D development will accelerate once BBS FM is completed, why not just not make a FM for BBS and focus on new games?
