Eternal Sonata was kinda crazy..The combat was fun, the story largely nonsense, and it was crudely interrupted with black and white videos regarding the life and times of Chopin.
If you are big into Chopins music and also like JRPGs, its probably a match made in heaven. Otherwise its an "meh, interesting" sort of title.
Tales of Vesperia was just plain awesome though. Best JRPG I've played this generation.

@R Planteer,
Eternal Sonata was awful. Combat was fun as you said, but story was complete garbage nonsense and tried to take itself seriously. And I'm not even getting started on the voice acting (nor the terribly written dialogue that went along with it)...

I have a $20 credit from buying Halo Reach, I wonder if I should buy Vesperia for $3? I was going to put it towards Castlevania....

Why do you need us to make a decision for you? Check the reviews for Vesperia and any previews for Castlevania.
Laziness is not endearing.

No need to be rude. Just because you hide behind your computer thriving with bitterness towards everyone doesn't give you the right to call others lazy. He was just asking a question...to people like me who care. You can just pretend you didn't here it. Okay?

I'd say go for Tales of Vesperia. Simply put it will keep you busy long enough for Castlevania to go on sale :-)
And then you can get Castlevania cheaper when you know you want to buy that too! Also there are yet no reviews for Castlevania, but Tales has been praised by plenty of people.

I bought Eternal Sonata and rather enjoyed it. :(
Okay, sure, I never bothered to finish it, but it had beautiful music and pretty colors.

IMO, Eternal Sonata > Tales of Vesperia. I thought Vesperia was a rather lackluster entry in the series, and it felt really archaic. Eternal Sonata may not have done much new, but at least it wasn't a chore to play through and benefitted from a completely batshit story.

Yes, the fever dream that is Eternal Sonata...
I like them both. They definitely skew on the colorful cel shaded side of things.

Tales of Vesperia is one of the great RPGs that didn't get enough limelight because it doesn't say Final Fantasy in it. If you love an RPG with a killer story then Tales of Vesperia is a much get.

I played through Eternal Sonata over the course of a night (well into the morning) with two friends and had a blast. You can assign different controllers to each character and play through the game co-operatively. It might not be "official" co-op since it's still turn-based, but it's a damned good excuse to play through with friends.
The combat was incredible; a great blend of turn-based and action RPG combat. My only gripe is that you'd see the same character and monster positions at the start of combat over and over -- if they were randomized, it'd be perfect.
The story is ludicrous, but made awesome with friends around since you can all make fun of the horrendous acting and overly melodramatic cutscenes and nonsensical plot.
If you like co-op and have two friends around and a night to kill, I'd seriously recommend giving this a try. So fun.

Tales of Vesperia was a pretty great game. I am severely burnt out on JRPG's, and have been for years, but there's so much polish and good voice acting going on there that I really enjoyed it.
So if you're considering checking it out for $23? I say go for it.

I enjoyed the gameplay of Eternal Sonata so much I actually played through it twice back to back to collect all of the score pieces. Oh, to be a bachelor again.

Both excellent deals. Tales of Vesperia is one of the best JRPG's of the last few years.
Now, how about a deal on the PS3 version with extra content, or just having it exist in the US?

Somehow, my game sense at work started tingling and I checked Amazon for this deal of the day. So glad I did, seems that Tales of Vesperia sold out.

As a long time Tales fan, I find Vesperia to be the best in the series.
I put a lot of hours into it and it is definitely work a purchase, especially at a discount price!
Also Yuri is awesome, that is all.

Can't say I was amazed by either game, but Eternal Sonata easily gets the thumbs up from me for being different (both thematically and in the combat system).
