Or, you could just use an Xbox 360 wired controller. It definitely feels more responsive/less cheap than these peripherals. The game controls very well with the Xbox controller.

Sadly, my 99 cent (shipped no less!), Chinese rip off of a PS2 controller I have for my PC looks really well made compared to this. Ouch Square.. ouch.

I have to agree...looks like those cheap controllers that you would get at Walmart, with a tiny FFXIV logo.

Search "motioninjoy" for those wondering how to get PS3 controllers working on PC. Bluetooth's a bitch, though; USB is much easier.

motioninjoy and I also use Joystick 2 Mouse for games that don't recognize the DS3 right away and other advanced commands.

It looks cheaply built, but it probably won't be cheap because it is all official and licensed. If I even plan on using a controller, which I wouldn't anyway for a PC game, I'd use a 360 pad since they are built far better.

It's $40, so it costs more than a USB adapter to connect a PS2 DualShock2 that you likely already own.

I've not kept up with the development of this, but what’s wrong with using the keyboard and mouse?

@skell Cause not everyone likes using Keyboards and Mice to play games.

@skell The game is a direct PS3 'port' - even though the PC is the PS3 alpha test and it's probably devved on the PC, the control scheme is pure console.

For instance no drag and drop anywhere. And it even uses the IJKL keys to emulate the right stick on the controller - and if you don't know that won't be able to do things like scroll the map. The horrible software emulated cursor ensures that even your mouse will lag along like a left-stick cursor.

Anyhow, mouse + kb gives you very little advantage beyond some extra toolbar slots because the control scheme is so cheap and bad. Just like the rest of the game, really.

I'm all for a controller friendly MMO, but that looks pretty cheaply made just by glance. And what's wrong with some people and using a controller with an MMO anyways? Sure keyboard and mouse is best but sometimes you just feel like slouching back in a chair lazily you know?

Most MMO's are way too complex to play with a controller.

Looks like a pretty simple controller for a game you need a masters degree to figure the hell out. I really did not enjoy my time with the FFXIV beta - I'm sure XI fans will enjoy the heck out of it though.

Why is it this gamepad can use the standard "nintendo" d-pad, but Microsoft can't?

I never bought the idea that nintendo owned the copyright on plus-signs . . .

@JCDoe

Most likely they reached out to Nintendo and licensed the d-pad for use in their controller.

Nintendo did indeed own the patent on the Plus-shaped D-pad, but tech patents only last 14 years and have since expired.

Sony and Microsoft stick to their D-pads because they (incorrectly) feel their designs are superior.

@The Cynical Gamer

Somehow I doubt Nintendo would give up permission to a copy written tech unless it was attached to a piece of their hardware. Historically, they've always been very protective of their (low) tech.

And if MS and Sony think their Dpads are better . . . well, let's just hope they aren't that dumb. :)

For those who are saying MMO on gamepad lolz; FF XIV was actually developed for play with the game pad. In Japan, many PC players prefer the gamepad to the standard kb/mouse set up. In fact, after I hooked up my old wireless 360 controller, the game became 100% more playable for me.

Or, and I know this is reaching, perhaps Square Enix could take a couple of days away from designing new underwear to learn how to design a PC interface that isn't complete and utter garbage. You see those things you're programming on, guys? They're called keeeeeeeeeeeeys.
