Lovely stuff. I do wish they'd make a new engine though...

They'll update it to idTech5, Rage's engine. It will be lovely.

I hope the guy at the end means we get to blow up one of the cities again like we could with Megaton.

That was glorious. I have it pre-ordered, couldn't pass up the bonuses. This is guaranteed to be a wo derfuk experience.
Only thing that annoyed me in the TV Spot was the "Sequel to 2008 Game of the Year." While Fallout 3 was probably my personal GOTY that year, they make it sound like there is one, definitive Game of the Year award.

@Shadowbender Fable II did the same thing, I do believe. It only got one, maybe two, GOTY awards (while MGS4 and LBP took all the others) but they made it sound like Fable II was THE Game of the Year.
But I see your point.

Good God does that engine look dated.

You could say the same thing about Halo's overall aesthetic.
Making new engines entirely doesn't sound like a very quick task that they can do, and you have to remember that NV development started before Fallout 3's release.

I disagree.
Halo Reach had a wonderful new art direction. Darker, more gritty, and somewhat more realistic. Though, Reach is a great stopping point for the franchise.
However, this engine looked dated back when FO3 was released. Now it's sort of embarrassing.
Oh how I hope Bethesda is secretly working on the next Elder Scrolls title...with a new breathtaking engine.

@kentuckyfried uh, maybe if you mean Halo 1 you could. Halo Reach is an entirely New Engine and looks miles and miles better than 3. But i'd like to focus more on that you said "aesthetic", do you mean to say that the bright and colorful vast landscapes and technological terrors that makes up Halo's games are outdated? Because I wouldnt say that the open but irradiated desert and destroyed strips are dated but the engine that provides them certainly is

@Riley Freeman Oh my gosh that would be incredible.
They should continue to expand upon ufology, espcially since there was the UFO craze in that tine period Fallout takes it's inspiration from. Really interesting.

@Riley Freeman I wouldn't be surprised if there were an eventual expansion for it considering Mothership Zeta.

First Look? I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but this ad was on TV about 3 weeks ago, unless I'm going completely insane (which is entirely possible).
Regardless, the game looks fantastic!

i really want to be as excited as everyone else is for this game, but i can't get over how much this seems like a fallout 3 expansion. even the commercial is similar to the fallout 3 commercial (starts out with ad, then zooms out into the wasteland).
obsidian, please prove me wrong.

yeah, don't get me wrong, i'm by no means saying it'll be a bad game, or that it won't be worth the money. but for a full sequel i'm wondering what they'll have to make it different from fallout 3, other than plot/setting/etc.

To be fair almost all the Fallout games have that.

I believe Joystiq's Mike Schramm played the first 90 minutes after initially playing it at E3 earlier and had this to say
"When I played Fallout: New Vegas at E3 earlier this year, I got the impression that it was basically more of the same -- there was the same faction-based open-ended gameplay as Bethesda's acclaimed Fallout 3, the same VATS-flavored first-person shooting, and the same dialogue-driven story, albeit in a new setting.
After playing through about the first 90 minutes of New Vegas, however, I think I might have been wrong. I don't think it's exactly the same as its predecessor. I think it might be better."

There not going to make a new engine becaue the engine they use is VERY good. I'm guessing you want a new engine because of the whole graphics thing. Well that problem falls to the Hardware. Bethesda has always pushed the hardware to its limits.

Las Vegas (or New Vegas I should say) is a much more interesting place to explore as opposed to Washington D.C., in my opinion. So long as it is more polished than the average Obsidian game, it should be a hoot!
Obsidian Entertainment - the victim of great game concepts executed poorly.
P.S. Has Obsidian stated whether there would be a healthy dose of DLC post-release (a la Fallout 3)?

To everyone who is complaining about the engine, Obsidian is making this game not Bethesda, and they are using the same engine that Bethesda made for Fallout 3 because there is no possible way they could have made a whole new engine from scrap and get this game out in two years. However, I've got a gut feeling that Bethesda is working on a new engine to run a little game called The Elder Scrolls V. Its gonna happen sooner or later, right?
Posted: Sep 26th 2010 7:08AM MeatyCarling said
@Dudimus24 Well said. I hope another elder scrolls is in the making but I think following the success of Fallout 3 (and most likely Vegas) that we will see a true sequel to the game in the near future.

It looks ok, as long as it's good, no worries.
For those complaining about the engine, go download ArcaniA Gothic 4 demo on XLive. You'll see the light.

This engine (which Bethesda didn't "make" for Fallout 3, it's a licensed engine they've also been using for Elder Scrolls games) isn't so bad.. Landscapes can be really beautiful at times. Blurring is overdone. The real problem is just character animations and models. These games would come to life with some endorphin character physics.. You know how characters stumble but try to stay up in GTAIV? Get some of that, with routines for picking up weapons, using cover, usual AI stuff, and we'd have some dynamic behavior rather than the jerky stuff happening now. Player models aren't so big an issue, I think the animations are the main niggle for me.

This game looks pretty sick! I just think it would be better set in a military kinda zone? and I definitely think they should make an in-browser game to attract more audiences? Maybe a bit like http://infantryx.com/
