Oddworld's Stranger getting a makeover for PS3 remake

As seen in the image above, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath's main character is getting a truckload or two of new polygons in Just Add Water's forthcoming remastered version of the game. How many more, specifically, you ask? Is 17,000 enough, roughly seven times more than the original Xbox version? Certainly is for us!

The difference is far more stunning when viewed on a larger scale than our header image will allow, so we'd suggest heading to JAW's dev blog and seeing for yourself. On the same blog, you'll find a handful of details regarding what specifically is being changed about Stranger's Wrath.

Yes! Can't wait. I scoured many a Gamestops in search of the Xbox version with no prevail. I'm glad it would come to me in a nice clean package now...

Great company, IMO. Not that you'll need it anymore, but it's there. Cannot wait for this one, one of my absolute favourites!

Just a note on finding the original: it isn't backwards compatible.

I still don't see why they would announce the remake for 360 first instead of announcing them at the same time (If they are making it for 360 as well). People who played strangers wrath would more than likely pick this up for 360 rather than PS3 owners

Says who? :/ Because the original was on 360? Or have you forgotten Abes Oddysee and Exodus were both on PS1, for those who haven't got a 360 or had the original Xbox, this is a nice return to the series they haven't had in years.Speak for yourself, I haven't played an Oddworld game since Exodus and I'd be more than happy to play this one when it releases.

There's no guarantee it would sell better on either.

Oddworld Stragers Wrath was originally only on xbox & a remake would be most appropriate if a 360 version was included being that it was only on xbox to begin with. If it was any other Oddworld game on PS1 then yes, it would make sense, but it's an xbox original.

@Prboi The OWI fanbase is too smart to be bogged down by console loyalties/fanboyism. If you love Oddworld, you probably both a PS3 and 360 ... because you love fantastic games and will stop at nothing to play them.

Just because the original was on Xbox doesn't mean it will make a difference whether or not it is on PS3 or Xbox. The number of people that own a 360 makes the original Xbox owners look like nothing, so chances are, many 360 owners wouldn't have played the game anyway, possibly even know little to nothing about Oddworld games. So I doubt it makes that much difference which console it goes to.

Like I said, 2 Abe games were on PS1, and only a select number of people will even remember those, but they were the ones that got the series known and popular :/ I doubt if a remake of those were going to 360 it would have made much difference likewise.

First off, Rare was sold by Nintendo themselves, they're the ones who lost out & Microsoft purchased them, so that's why that happened.

I'm just saying, it should at least be announced as a multiplatform title considering that it WAS on the original Xbox & not PS2. I understand that there are many people who love Oddworld games & are glad it's back on Sony's console. But there were 2 Oddworld games on th original Xbox & I think being that it was on Xbox that it should be remade on the 360 along with the PS3 instead of hinting that it could be on 360. I loved both Oddworld games on the original Xbox but I never finished strangers wrath. I don't think it's fair that they would just remake it for a console that didn't have it in the previous generation. I'm not being a fanboy or a troll or anything you guys might think I'm being. I just want it on 360 as well, that's all.

Well that's up to them, it's their decision for some reason or another.

It is being remade by a new team, who knows why they chose to put it on PS3 and keep 360 development quiet, maybe it's a test, or they figured they'd give Sony some love after skipping the PS2 gen and choosing to go to Xbox in the first place when the previous instalments were on the PS1, much to the annoyance of PS1 Abe owners such as myself.

Hopefully it will get multiplat treatment, but for the time being, its not worth a debate, it's on PS3, if it does well or bad, they may spread it over to 360 or keep making PS3 exclusives, who knows what they have in mind. Its not a direct sequel like Mass Effect 2, so 360 owners who have played it already aren't missing out on anything bar the graphics upgrade and PS3 owners won't have any catching up to do so I fail to see why this is much of an issue.

Yep, Nintendo sold their 49% share in the company. There other option would have been keeping minority share in a company where Microsoft held majority, essentially helping fund Xbox games. Rare sold themselves into mediocrity. People who think Nintendo actually wanted to lose their best second party developer are being kind of silly.

JAW don't owe anything to the 360. Stranger's Wrath (Xbox version) still isn't even compatible with the console. It was sent out to die with the original Xbox, anyhow.

@Prboi Two things annoy me about this post.

1. It assumes people actually BOUGHT Strangers Wrath on XBox, which given the fact that it essentially killed the studio, the studios stubborn "Xbox Exclusive" rants and position was the primary damaging factor to this game, and that immediately after release EA severed all publishing ties to the franchise that was previously abandoned by Microsoft (yes, Microsoft dropped OWI), that minority is, in fact, a minority.

2. Being console exclusive is what lead to this games demise in the first place. The reason why it hasn't been announced on 360, so far, is likely because they are working on one version then seeing how difficult the port will end up being before commiting to it. It's an HD remake of a VERY VERY VERY niche game that failed the first time out. Just how much money do you think they have to throw at this project?

Exciting to see this game get the rerelease. Hopefully it gets the Move treatment.

An abe oddysee (still on a 2d pane not 3d) remake would be awsome.
Would be great right about now especialy with Rayman and Sonic 4 getting the oldschool revamp

I'd like to see Abe again, but I didn't much like it in 3D, I think that ruined Munch. 3D ruins the atmosphere and fun somehow, if they ever did consider reviving Abe's story in 3D, they would have to carefully plan how to make it as good as the first 2 were.

it'd be nice if the text said 'Xbox 1' or "original Xbox". When that image shows up in Bing (I went there), some people are going to think it's 360 vs PS3. Search your feelings.. you know it to be true

The added detail to the face and pretty much everywhere else is fantastic.

I've always wanted to play this. I even bought it once, but found out it didn't work on 360. Really looking forward to this.

And am I the only one who thinks of John Marston? Something about Stranger reminds me of him. Probably the beard and hat.

So Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exodus are on PSN and now Strangers Wrath is coming to PS3. Here's to hoping they do the same for Munch's Oddysee and maybe at next years' E3, we'll see a new game for good ol' Abe.

Can't say I have as much love for Munch as I do the other three :/ Munch just didn't seem to hook me. I personally felt the series had gone in the same direction as Dino Crisis 3, until Strangers Wrath proved otherwise, lol.

Reading the comments on the dev-diary, it's possible of a 360 version, yes. They are in talks about it, but right now it's totally up to Microsoft, not J.A.W.

@RKN I heard some rumor of the Oddworld games that didn't come to PC to be released on Steam.

I've played through Stranger's Wrath several times. I swear it just keeps getting better. I hope it gets made for as many systems as possible so as many people as possible can discover and enjoy it.
It not being among the games backward compatible on the 360 was very disappointing.

Likely Repeat: The Oddbox is coming to Steam, which supports "Achievements".

However, it'd be surprising if an Xbox game wasn't remade with X360 in mind.

Funny how 17,000 polys really doesn't make a huge difference. The face is better sculpted, but let's face it, that was always meant to be a face only a mother could love anyway. The arms actually look *better* on the Xbox model!
