Activision's Bobby Kotick and EA's Jeff Brown engaged in a little Battlefield of Duty: Corporate Warfare 2 match this week, lobbing sound bites back and forth at each other. Kotick was first, boasting in the latest issue of Edge (via Next-Gen.biz) that his company allows its studios to maintain their independent cultures; citing Treyarch, the embattled Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games as examples. Kotick suggested that EA doesn't offer this luxury, and that's why Activision has successfully hired developers from its competitor's ranks. "We have no shortage of opportunity to recruit out of EA," he said. "That's their biggest challenge: Its stock options have no value. It's lost its way."
Of course, Brown, EA's corp comm VP, was quick to respond: "[Kotick's] company is based on three game franchises -- one is a fantastic persistent world he had nothing to do with; one is in steep decline; and the third is in the process of being destroyed by Kotick's own hubris." Though Brown didn't clarify which franchises he was referring to, we'll throw out three names for you -- and you can play the matching game! Here goes: Guitar Hero, Call of Duty and World of Warcraft.
The two suits probably had more to say to each other, but at that point the other players muted them both, and a few seconds later the actual match started up.

@FriedConsole Nah we hate Ubisoft because of there DRM. We hate EA for making the 'same' sports games each year and Activision because they are a big evil cooperation that disbanded Infinity Ward and has Bobby Kotick saying stupid stuff on their behalf. Also, they make the 'same' game each year!

Kotick is apt to point out that EA doesn't allow developers to maintain their individuality.
I mean, there's no way any bitter former Activision first-party developers might form a new studio with EA fronting the bill while they develop a new IP without being purchased outright by the publisher.
Oh wait...

HEY! Don't you dare speak of the current EA like that! I mean, they may have once been terrible, and their sports division may warrant some questions, but games like Dead Space and Mirror's Edge are a true blessing, not to mention all their other great games this gen.

ea games i can mention for this gen.
mass effect series
dragon age series
dead space
mirrors edge
battlefield
crysis
red alert 3
then of course the games they whore out, like need for speed (that's changing) and their sports games
Activision games i can mention?
Call of duty series and... guitar hero (world of warcraft was around years before activision and blizzard merged, so i wont even give them credit for that)
i would say EA is one of the better publishers this gen

@BrianH That's bit hypocritical, considering that Dragon Age and Mass Effect were already in development before EA bought out Bioware, Crysis is owned by Crytek not EA, and Battlefield and Red Alert are from 2002/1996 and are exploited no less than COD. Bash Activision all you want, but EA are no saints themselves. Even as recently as 2008 they attempted to buy out Take 2 (2K+Rockstar), and bought out Bioware+Pandemic, shutting down Pandemic when their games underperformed, while reducing Bioware to feed out DLC. Let's not mention the Project $10 nonsense, EA Sports Online Pass, a virtual monopoly in Madden Football, etc.

He's been involved with GH since about GH3 or so.
As far as I know he has absolutely nothing to do with WoW though.
Also, I agree about Tony Hawk. It's just gotten worse over time.
(And CoD is still amazingly super popular, so it's not declining yet.)

I don't get why we should like either of these companies because the screenshot is so generic it shows that both these corporations crap out the same crap.

Maxis, Visceral, Mythic, Criterion, BioWare, DICE, and more.
Sure EA has tons of "EA [place]" type studios (like EA LA and EA Montreal), but some of their biggest studios have a great studio identity.

Considering Origin lasted another 12 years, and Bullfrog was at least merged into another studio, it's not that bad.
Besides, that was back when EA was less than great. Since the start of the new console generation they've gotten much better. (Since 2005-2006 only 2-3 studios have closed, compared to about 9 closing from 2001-2005).

No. Activision doesn't own Bungie, they just have a ten year contract wherein Bungie's games are released exclusively by Activision. Besides, Bungie doesn't even own the rights to the Halo franchise, Microsoft Game Studios does.

I believe the listing of the Activision series should reordered to World of Warcraft, Guitar Hero, and Call of Duty, (respectively).
WoW = persistent game Activision had nothing to do with, GH = on the decline, Kotick's hubris = driving COD into the ground.
