Fable 3 'Kingmaker' companion game coming Oct. 1 to 'smartphones'

Back in August, Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux teased that, while there wouldn't be a Pub Games-like companion game for Fable 3 on XBLA, something similar was in the works -- seemingly for mobile phones -- that we'd see in October. Well, that something would definitely appear to be Fable 3 Kingmaker, a "smartphone" game due on October 1. The title was revealed by the UK's Xbox World magazine and detailed by CVG.

"The battleground is your town, and your only weapon is your smartphone," according to Xbox World, which, when combined with statements like "plant virtual flags for the Royals or the Rebels" and "claim power-ups in locations throughout the United Kingdom," suggests that Kingmaker will be a foursquare-style app based on checking in at different locations in the real world. "For every flag you plant, and every power up you claim, you shall earn gold coins, which you shall then be able to transfer into the Fable 3 game on your Xbox 360," the description reads.

Of course, this information is UK-centric, so we're checking with Microsoft's US PR to clarify release plans for North America. There's also the matter of what exactly a "smartphone" constitutes in this case -- will the game be released in the Apple App Store and Android Market? An official site for Kingmaker has been launched, which, for now, simply contains some artwork and the October 1 date.

I thought before when they said it wasn't Pub Games that it would be a WP7 game, but this makes sense too. I can't wait to pick it up with my future WP7!

I have a suspicion that this will be WP7 exclusive. And it won't be the last.

A location based game? They don't seriously think we leave the house...do they?

I wish more games had iPhone and Android companion apps.

Stuff like this but also stuff like character/in-game graphic designers would be good to have on my phone. There are a lot of things I don't have time for sitting in front of my TV but I would enjoy doing while sitting on the bowl at work.

YEAH I SAID IT.

This royally pisses me off. I am a die hard Fable fan boy and I have been since Project Ego. I have been part of the community for a long time. I am obviously a HUGE Fable fan and because of that I want everything I can get related to the series. Now this is announced and there is one problem. I am not wealthy in the least, I am barely paying for college, and that is with working as much as possible. I can't pay $60-$100 a month to get a smart phone. They better not add any in-game bonuses like they did with the XBLA games. At least with that, everybody with XBL could play them before hand and they were also in the game, so nobody was left out.

Your concept of being 'not wealthy in the least' is hilarious to me, college kid with video game habit. Agreed, though, I'd hate to see them add any in-game content and cater to anyone else besides you.

I always think foursquare looks remarkably stupid when I see the updates on facebook. This, however, I'd snap up in an instant.

Maybe someone can come up with a good whiny nickname for the town crier to bellow at you... Unless you have to sell your videogames or eyeballs or something just to afford basic sustenance...

wow, thanks for being a prick. I never said that they should cater to me or that I am searching the streets for every penny I can find. I am not paying for college alone, its called Financial Aid and loans. However, if I must get into it, my parents work two jobs a pop, we can barely afford fairly basic cable, and so on. Again, I said I am not wealthy, I didn't say I was broke.

I was saying that I was a big fan not because I think that means they should do what I want, but rather to show that this game is leaving out people who make up the most serious part of their community.

I am not the only one who feels this way. Go to the Lionhead forum and you will see that there are numerous people who are upset about this. And since when did luxury items such as smart phones become basic sustenance?

Apparently, it is wrong for me to have an opinion.

Donny, you should really look at it this way, the core gameplay of Fable 3 will be left untouched for you. In-game extras and whatnot aside, your Fable 3 experience will not change (in any significant matter) whether you have Kingmaker or not.

I was thinking thi sexact thing...way to screw over anyone who doesnt have a smart phone. They can take their shitty money making schemes and shove em...one more reason I rarely buy DLC period.

I need a smartphone? that sucks.. couldn't just GPS work..? although my phone can't figure out where I am...

Seriously considering jumping iShip to WP7.this would be a nice addition to the "pros" column.

It's Windows Mobile 7, Android, J2Me (Nokia) and iPhone (thats a fact as well).
