Parasite Eve deserves more than just a portable title.

Never did he say portable gaming sucked OR did he say anything about the graphics. And if you read the review, the graphics seem to be the best thing about this game so far.

From your comment, you'd think a HD screen raped and killed your mother or something...

@MidgardDragon And I bet those great games would be better in HD graphics, because 90% of them didn't bother using the portable platforms' strengths, and so the gameplay wouldn't change a thing.

And that's what get on my f'ing nerves: irrelevant, lazy handheld games.

Some of the complaints lobbied against this game could be easily solved by a DS3 controller. That's not to mention the level design which, admittedly, isn't the PSP's fault directly, but could at least be somewhat better on a system with better hardware.

Maybe they should've just waited and made it a PSP2 title.

@WiredKnight i second that! Vagrant Story deserves another game too. I mention this because it and PE1 are pretty similar in terms of combat

Mystile is right, I never said portable gaming sucked, or anything close to what you're suggesting. In fact I agree with you, I love my DS and there are a lot of great portable games out there.

Would people have been satisfied if God of War 3, the climax of the series, had only been released for PSP, instead of having the massively epic and downright gorgeous game that they decided to bring to the PS3? Sure, they made a couple for the PSP, but they're really only supplemental to the blockbuster console releases.

My point is that Parasite Eve deserves the same treatment. I wish that the developers put in the time and energy to bring it to consoles (where it began) and fulfill the game's potential with current-gen technology. This iteration seems like little more than an afterthought, a hasty, empty tribute to what the series once was. I can only say I hope they prove me wrong.

This brings up a question that's been on my mind for a while. Can anbody name the PSP's "strengths?" Not bashing the thing here as I seriously do love mine, but every time I hear a developer say they're "playing to the device's strengths" it just rings sort of hollow to me.

Possible strengths:
Portability
Beautiful graphics for a portable
Online capabilities (Obviously not this one as developers seem pretty keen to pretend they don't exist.)
Ummm, analog stick? No wait, that just makes people gripe because it only has one. Bold choice going with the same plan on the 3ds by the way, Nintendo.

@Elmoogle
It's not a bold choice but a HIGHLY significant one for Nintendo handhelds. First of all it's significant for the 3DS because this will be the first time ever that a Nintendo handheld is giving players true three-dimensional control of 3D games (3D design, not the visual effect). Sure, you could say PSP came out the gate offering that but it's not as significant b/c the PSP was released in a time where most of its games (which are 3D) require three-dimensional/analog controls (which is exactly why PSP users gripe about there only being 1 stick - it's half the experience).

Nintendo actually listened to DS users who were playing a lot of FPS's and such and stuck the analog stick on the 3DS, plus it has a touchscreen allowing to rotate 360 degrees and whatnot. I play 3D games and shooters all the time on my DS Lite and DSi XL whereas the only shooter games IMO that handle well are (the excellent) Syphon Filter games and Resistance Retribution, just like Andrew said.

From what you played, did they show anything that actually connects to the previous games, other than Aya herself?

I mean, are they just abandoning the various ideas from PE and PE2? Any mention of her adopted sister? The guy with the bum leg?

I want to like it...I want a new PE game something awful...but...

I really enjoyed the combat system of the first game. In fact, I'm pretty sure PE is the reason I enjoyed Fallout 3 and the VATS system as much as I did.

Still curious about The 3rd Birthday though.

Oh well I guess. I'll still get this anyway.

Gameplay has changed greatly from game to game and this doesn't seem to be exception tough it sounds more like the second PE than the first one, too bad this gameplay looks outdated =(

You killed it there for me Yoon, right there where you talked about the gameplay; The game devolves to a very basic third-person shooter: lock on to an enemy, strafe, and fire with one of your four equipped weapons.

Sounds like the Enslaved demo. I pretty much pressed left on the joystiq and mashed X. Delete, no thanks.

I don't know anything about PE, and the PSP is a hard place to find a good 3rd person shooter game. So you know, I'm not really losing out here. I never had it to begin with.

I thought the Enslaved demo was fun, and I am definitely grabbing this game along with PE 1&2 as I never got the chance to play either of them.

@Nook I'm actually ok with it being lock-on gameplay. I don't have to worry about compensating for "handheld control" and can just focus on enjoying the game. Now, if this were on a console, I would want an option to turn the lock-on off.

Bummer.

I don't care how good they are able to make PSP 3PS's feel, it always comes at a price. Sony needs to either adopt the DS mindset and make actual portable games or GIVE US A SECOND ANALOG STICK.

News flash: Square cannot make action games. That's why they got into RPGs in the first place. It's almost reassuring to know that, over 25 years, at least one thing about them hasn't changed.

the Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker controls were..... um, really solid. why not make lock-on optional and give co-op so you won't have to constantly possess other players. psps were made for co-op

Besides the switching trough characters thing, this game looks to me so much like Resistance: Retribution. I dont blame them though, the PSP doesnt really gives many options for gameplay when is about shooters

So... is the camera the d-pad, or the face buttons? Because "face-buttons as camera" seems to be the best solution for the PSP, and it works Really Really well.

@TheMCFacemanBandcampcom That's how I feel with a lot of PSP games. Not because I wish they would go to a console, but I just like to support games developed for the PSP. Valkyria Chronicles is my latest effort. Now that, I would love to come back to PS3.

I'm ok with the lock on feature. Fun can still be had if the game's heavy on acrobatics and stuff. Besides, I hated Syphon Filter's and Resistance's "analog stick mapped to buttons". But that's just me.

You're basing this preview on one part of the game. We haven't seen everything that this battle system has to offer yet, as stated by this article: http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/09/27/3rd_birthday_dev_interview/

Better yet, here's the part you SHOULD NOTE:
"Although The 3rd Birthday was demoed at TGS, players were only given a general look at how the game plays. There are a number of systems that weren't in the TGS version of the game, and some of these areas are related to Aya's true strength. Tabata said to expect specifics in future announcements."

So everybody, hold back kicking this into the generic 3rd person shooter category until we've seen everything.
