Hmm, hopefully Activision doesn't allow the Call of Duty branding to turn sour like this by you know having a completely different company develop it, ousting the original developers, and releasing a new version to frequently.

Oh wait.

Just for the record (no pun intended), the version of ZZ Top's "Sharp Dressed Man" in Guitar Hero was a cover, no the original studio track. Sorry to hear the live version included here isn't so hot. It's one of the few songs in this game I was looking forward to.

I don't think live versions of songs should ever be used as part of the on-disc tracklist. I was excited to see Good Vibrations on RB3's setlist only to be followed by disappointment at it being a live version.

@squallgengar The rumor is that the vocal masters for Good Vibrations are missing, so the had to go for the next best thing. Here's hoping that the live rendition is a good one.

Dude, that's just stupid, hating on it because it's a live version. The Flight 666 Iron Maiden DLC is AMAZING.

@Mr Bungo Another small correction - the touch pad was introduced on the guitar included with Guitar Hero World Tour, not Guitar Hero 5. On that note... is there *any* difference between the GH4 and GH5 guitars? I have never actually removed anything from my GH5 bundle other than the game itself, and I am also in the unfortunate position of not being able to verify for myself. (Can't seem to ever find the answer online either)

The difference is that the 5 guitar has a different mechanism under the strum bar. Basically, it's the mechanism from the GH3 Les Pauls. They went with some weird complicated switches for the GHWT guitars, which are pretty damn flimsy, and then went back to the simpler (but better feeling and more durable) setup from before.

You missed the bit in his comment about how ON DISC songs shouldn't be live, and I agree with him. Like you said, the Flight 666 stuff was DLC.

predictable. It's been almost a year since I have felt the need to pick up my plastic instruments and play Rock Band or Guitar Hero. I may pick up Rock Band 3 sometime down the road, but I think I will pass on this one.

Out of curiosity, does GH:WoR allow you to import tracks from past Guitar Hero games?

@WMcPete

yes, there's a small fee and not all the songs get imported.

it seems like a pretty paltry number of actually make it. importing from RB1 to RB2, you lost 3 songs from the original setlist. but i remember seeing that importing from GH:WT to GH5 resulted in like half the songs missing due to licensing issues, which Activision claimed they would try to get more of over time, but i don't believe any more songs have been added to the original list of importable songs. can someone else confirm this?

Ditto, I remember when the first Guitar Hero was released on PS2. Everything from the wait, previews, to finally playing it for the first time and the subsequent hours spent on the game were incredible! Haven't felt that way about a music game in a LONG time.

It also had Pantera... which automatically makes it one of the best music games ever. Most music games seem to puss out on trying to get licenses for metal bands, it's always the same ones... they hardly ever branch out. Even when they do they pick up the least appealing song from said bands.

KSE is a perfect example. I love My Curse, but there are songs that would be WAY better for GH/RB.

Guitar Hero may have been the first to the party but they really haven't bothered to push the envelope and evolve anything, have they? This doesn't really surprise me and I've haven't been especially interested in this title. It didn't get much air time and the ads are limited.

And I agree, at least Rock Band initially introduced something different to the music franchise with the "band" element and again, they're introducing something different in their newer iteration. Trying to make the music genre actually teach you music skills rather than button presses is very cool. Of course manipulating a plastic guitar with over 100 buttons seems a bit intimidating but at least it's something new.

Either way, nice review Griffin. ;D

Do you realise the Harmonix were responsible for Guitar Hero 1 and 2? Neversoft took the franchise over from Guitar Hero 3 while Harmonix went on to create Rock Band.

It's no real surprise that Rock Band is the franchise where any innovation happens.

See... but that's the problem. If the game's only redeeming factor is that "there's songs and they are fun to play on my instruments"... then why not just make them DLC instead... like, let's say... Rock Band does? That's Guitar Hero 6 which plays like Guitar Hero 4. Which plays like Guitar Hero 5. We were promised great things. And all we got is an expansion pack that doesn't add anything to the actual gameplay.

@Dark Archon PSN Archonik XBL Dar Well, the interface is a lot cleaner, the added story mode is surprisingly fun, playing 2112 and having that segment of story was fun, and a very good inclusion. You can't really do much with a Guitar Hero game, and i'd rather have a new game with 90+ songs and 1000 more gamerscore than just floods of DLC.

I don't think "You can't really do much with a Guitar Hero game" is the right attitude to take, even though that seems to be the path Activision has chosen for the series. There has to be more that can be done with the franchise to make it interesting (similar to Rock Band), but it seems no one wants to put forth the effort for that next step, and instead they'd rather slap on a different coat of paint and pretend the franchise is renewed.

You play DLC alone or rarely with others at best. I have 340 songs downloaded for RB and when I play that I rarely ever play any of them aside from the ~10 singles that are really popular.

For Guitar Hero, you pop in the disc with the songs you want and you're off. Of course, the downside is some titles are largely ignored like Smash Hits.

If Harmonix doesn't have a DLC Quickplay option in RB3 it's a major oversight/failure on their part.

@jsx92 I honestly can't understand any point you are trying to make in your post. How is having to switch game discs to play a few songs better than having 99% of the entire Rock Band library playable from under one game? And wWhat do you mean by DLC Quickplay? RB2 lets you sort the entire playlist by location, which separates RB1 from RB2 from DLC from AC/DC, etc.

@jsx92 I thought there was DLC Quickplay in RB2. Why wouldnt it be in RB3.

Rock Band now has roughly 5x the amount of music available vs. GH.

The best thing about GH6 sucking so bad is that, given this is a clear sign of capitulation in the category by Activision, it means we can all stop arguing about which is better and all start enjoying the same game - Rock Band - when Activision discontinues the series after this final gasp.

I hate to boycott a company's products just because their CEO is a douche, but I just can't help it. I think the ONLY Activision game I've bought this generation was X-Men Origins: Wolverine and that's only because it was on the super cheap. Going forward, I'll only buy Activision games used if I even want them at all. I'm a RB fanboy so this is not one of those games.

Great review - thanks Griffin. Loved those last two sentences. I used to be *insane* about the GH franchise. I'd be up all night the day before a new game and would play it all freakin' day when it was released. And I still remember picking up a wired guitar for the first time on my buddy's PS2 and playing 'Fire it Up' by Black Label Society and thinking "this is too awesome for words". I haven't bought a new GH game for I don't know how long and couldn't be less excited for Warriors of Rock. I'm not hating on GH/Activision just because it's the 'cool' thing to do; Activision really has milked it for all its worth and more, which makes me cry.

On a side note, I had already decided to go with RB3 this year, when it comes down to bargain bin prices though.

GH & RB need something new (not keyboards - snatch) to revitalise this genre, as its just not fun anymore.
