Over the past 24 hours, select members of the gaming industry peanut gallery have sounded off on Nintendo's recently announced launch plans for the 3DS. Many in the investment community balked at the high price and later-than-expected launch window, including Lazard Capital Markets' Colin Sebastian, who worries "shipment quantities to the U.S. next spring might be more constrained than originally anticipated." MF Global FXA Securities' Jay Defibaugh explained that those two qualms, combined with the devices apparent lack of 3G support, made the announcement a "worst-case scenario."
Though many analysts appear to share these concerns, EEDAR, which expects the handheld to come to the US in March 2011 at $249 to $299, disagrees. "The higher price point allows Nintendo to incorporate new features such as 3D movies, camera, and game support," EEDAR noted in a report received by Joystiq yesterday, later adding, "a 2010 Holiday launch would severely impact both the quantity and quality of titles that could be made available by November 2010."
Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter predicts that the market will bear the relatively high price of the handheld, though he expects the cost to drop to $250 when it arrives in the U.S.. The DSi has at least a year of games. It will take some time for the 3DS market to be large enough to ignore the HUGE DS base. It's possible that the DS platform could have a long live like the PS2.
Plus, the 3DS is backward compatible with DS games and DSiware.
I won't even consider a 3DS until this time next year to allow for possible game and hardware price drops or to at least pay less for launch games.

Not for me. I'm confident the 3DS will become my favorite platform of the generation, just as the DS Lite has done for this one, but that is not going to happen in 2011 right out of the gate.
The only game I'm interested in right now is Paper Mario, and it's not worth throwing down $300 or whatever for. I'll jump on board in a couple years, when it's $189, and has about a dozen good games.

@MLS Ocarina of Time 3DS is worth it enough for me. In fact, I plan on getting pretty much all of the first party games announced so far.

It's YOUR fault Joystiq. The high price is because of people like you! If only you pretended you hated it....

Sounds like a Price drop buy to me. That time frame also allows for a ton more games to be available by the time the price drops making it a great time to buy.

I'll buy it only when an R4 or some other homebrew invention is created for it.

Didn't we already gave Nintendo and other developers by using R4 and all the other generic carts? Yes, they were crappy games, and I admit I have used it too, but for 3DS, I'm actually buying games. Problem with having Carts? Don't get to play anygames because you have too many and I didn't put any effort to get the game. :(

does this mean the psp2 might end up cheaper than the 3ds?
I wonder what nintendo would do if that happened.

Considering the Pricing trend of Sony, most likely it will be about the same price as 3DS, possibly more.

If you think a significantly-improved PSP2 would launch in the near future for less than PSP Go launch price (or much less, if it's actually cheaper than 3DS) - well, keep thinking that if you like, but...
Sony's brand isn't based on being the 'value' option. They won't be looking to undercut 3DS price but to overcut 3DS graphics. (Which they will achieve since, while 3DS looks great, it's technically not all that impressive for 2011.) I'm sure they'll have a 3D screen too - which probably means we will see an awful lot of ports on one or other system.
All this assuming PSP2 actually exists / will be announced soon, obviously.
Personally I think Nintendo are trying to maximise profits (duh) and also reduce the inevitable shortages with these pricing. Basically, for year one, keep the kids out. If you have kids AND hardcore players clamouring for the same system, and you're going to sell everything you make anyway, then sell it to just the hardcore players for more money. Good business.
If it really turns out to be £200 ($315) in the UK, hell that's a bargain. (I'd guess it will be a touch more, like maybe £220?) At that rate, I'll pre-order one for sure.

Depending on the level of 3G, it could be free of cost. Something like what WiiConnect24 currently does would be negligible so long as Nintendo footed the bill for it themselves and were able to trot it out as a feature
Full-scale 3G functionality would be insane in multiple ways. Beyond cost, Nintendo would have to associate closely with mobile phone providers, and Nintendo has a bad track record of working closely with people to provide services

The handheld looks dope and im stoked for it but at 250 dollars I'll just wait however many years till its like 150 or so. I cannot justify spending the same amount on a handheld that I would spend on a console.

These same 'analysts' predicted the Wii's utter failure and PS3's continued supremacy over everything else.
The technology is compelling enough that with the numbers they're hoping to sell, it'll prolly STILL be difficult to find at $250 in stores. It won't matter if they make it $199 because no store will have them in stock! I know (and I'm sure many others here do too) people that made tons of money hoarding Wii stock in their neighborhood for the first year or so and made a killing on eBay, and these guys are more than willing to resell 3DS's for $500.

I don't care about the price. $300 seems fine to me - though I hope they at least bundle it with a game of sorts to really show off the 3D effects.
However, I really hope Nintendo releases it sometime before April 6 - that way, I have something to look forward to on my 30th Birthday! (Heck, April 5th is the release of Gears of War 3 - so that's something else to look forward to!)

At this rate if it's true i might have to buy a dsi xl if i want a handheld and wait a long while for a 3ds.On the positive side there's still plenty of great games on the ds I've never played.

It's a brilliant strategy selling the 3DS for $300. If it releases in March/April in the U.S... that's when Pokemon Black and White release in the U.S.
They will sell millions.

Three hundred and the only good titles will be Mario titles? No thanks, I'll wait for a new portable targeted at mature gamers and wait for systems to drop in price. Portable gaming only constitutes about 5-15% of my game time.

Seriously? Did you straight up just ignore anything that didn't have the name Mario in it. Because that's the only way your post makes sense.
And even then you're wrong.

why are you people complaining about the price? PSP started out at like 250 and it sucked. This system has better graphics, the touch screen, a good line up of games, and 3-frikkin-D

Wait, was anybody actually expecting it to have 3G? That seems like a rather odd criticism to level at it at this point in time.
Still, Nintendo is really pushing their luck here. I know I'm not the only one who isn't going to buy the 3DS until the price comes down. They could be leaving a pretty big foothold open for Sony, or even for a cell phone company that decides to get serious and releases a system with good controls, 3D, and a 3G online store.

If "WE" don't buy these, Nintendo could lose their competition by Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo is not as big company as Sony and Microsoft, so they can't beat others huge amount of R&D and marketing funding.
