Beyond Good & Evil HD: see the first screens
48
We got a chance to play a small section from early on in the freshly revealed Beyond Good & Evil HD yesterday evening at Ubisoft Digital Day 2010. Jade and Pey'j definitely looked higher-poly, while the textures were still clearly in the process of being swapped out. The framerate was a little inconsistent at this stage, but just by running at 1080p the game looked remarkable, even seven years after its 2003 debut.
Ubisoft couldn't confirm if this remastering should be taken as a sign that Beyond Good & Evil 2 had become a higher priority project at the company. You can, however, bet it will be keeping a close eye on sales of Beyond Good & Evil HD as a gauge of just how quickly it needs to get the sequel out the door.

I'm crossing my fingers for a platinum trophy, but either ways I'm still excited for this game.

Bayonetta, Mirror's Edge, and Crackdown come to mind as colorful new IPs of the HD age. And Enslaved is coming out soon. Just because many big-name titles (HALO, Gears of War, God of War, etc.) have the whole gritty gray-brown world thing going on doesn't mean that colorful games are dead.

Actually Halo is kind of known for it's bright vibrant colors.

OMG. Everyone must buy this. I already own it on PS2 and PC...but I'm still gonna buy the game. Remastered soundtrack oh maaan.
Also I bet this is a sign that they are preparing for BG&E2 in perhaps Fall 2011/Early 2012?
Hope this sells great, but I predict flop sadly.

I don't think it will flop, actually.
It's bound to get heaps of great reviews, especially for $10.
Plus, the only reason the original flopped is because it came out at the same time as bigger, even better reviewed games like PoP and Splinter Cell. Just like Cabela's and Halo.

Glad that they are actually remastering it and not just porting it. Stranger's Wraith and now this? I can't wait to see what gets remastered next.

I already got this game, so the only reason I'd buy is if the new version runs at 60fps or something. From the preview, dunno if that'll happen tho.

Every HD collection comes with a 2 or 3 game bundle, why should I buy this if it only comes with 1 game? Shouldn't I be better with... MK Kollection, or ICO and Shadow?
C'mon ubisoft, you can do better than this.

I hope they don't fix the framerate. It will bring back memories of me playing the PS2 version and the frame rate turning it into a slide show.
Seriously I think this game is unique and can be fun but a lot of users are going to get lost. This game is a frequent check the Walkthrough game and will probably frustrate a lot of users.

As beautiful as this is the game is missing a certain "grit" the original had. Kinda like how MGS: The Twin Snakes was a beautiful game in all the wrong ways, it lost the dirty feeling the original MGS had. Maybe they did it so they could fix supposed technical issues, but some the feeling it already had I can tell is just gone.

now's our chance. BUY THIS! we've all been wanting a sequel for years now. These companies only understand dollars, let's show them how badly we really want BG&E2.

Did you even play the first game? There's a reason people are remastering older games, because consumers want them!

Mmm...BG&E in HD is so yummy. The soundtrack was top notch if memory serves. Hopefully they just remaster the audio and don't change too much of the original music. I really enjoyed the way everything meshed in BG&E.
I can see why this won't be repackaged in a bundle like PoP and Splinter Cell. There's only one. C'mon now Ubisoft, quit holding out on us. At least give us some more info on the sequel you're developing at a snail's pace. ;D
I'm hoping for a $15 price point but realistically I see it at $20.

I am in love with this game all over again. Out of all the "HD remakes" being pushed out these days, this looks like one of the best so far. Now if only Burnout 3 and SSX Tricky were tweaked and uprezzed, my trifecta of favorite games of last generation would be complete.

Here's the thing with video games, and I know some won't agree with me but, games do not age well. Unlike classic movies. So updating it visually is a great thing! You must also understand that while this game was fantastic, it really didn't sell very well, and this should (hopefully) expose more people to it's awesomeness! If they were doing a Hollywood-like remake they'd change the story, characters and add more explosions. This is not that.

Looks really sharp, I had forgotten how awesome the color palette of that game was. I'm pretty sure they are working on BG&E2, but are just being super hush-hush about it. I predict an early 2012 release.

@Nintari what a ridiculous thing to say. They arent making the game completely new with all new graphics, animations, voice actors and everything like when they actually remake a movie. This is more just like when movies get re released on blu ray

I do remember hearing that BGAE2 is being developed by a rather small team that are just focusing on that game alone.

I could be wrong, but I think what Nintari was referring to by double dipping is when they release a film on DVD/BD, and then a couple years later do a Super Edition, and then a couple more years later do a ULTIMATE Edition, and then after that... (case in point, Terminator 2 and I think the Evil Dead series).
I think HD versions of ps2 games are a great idea and not really on the same level as Hollywood double dipping. If you really want to get into it, that's more like GOTY editions (but even then, its not like they typically include additional content not found elsewhere)

Well, this looks like a win for console users, but those screenshots don't look any better than my PC version. It's still in the early stages, so we'll see, but unless reviews say it looks better than PC version, I probably won't be buying, which sucks, cause like the post says, Ubi is probably watching the sales.

I always regretted selling my Xbox copy after finishing it. This just brings up more bad feelings. I've kept all my games since then, and a lot of them I didn't even enjoy nearly as much as BG&E. Oh, well, I suppose I can redeem my past mistake by purchasing the new updated version. Not even a second thought about that one!

I've actually never gotten a chance to play through this game. This will definitely be an immediate purchase for me, as it looks fantastic and like I've been seriously missing out.
While the HD re-release fad is quickly being exploited, I don't mind due to the large amount of games I missed out on during the last generation (this, Stranger's Wrath, Prince of Persia), or just never got around to buying (Sly Collection). I definitely support the notion if the quality is good.
