All the hard work must have been worth it -- theinternetftw has been posting about the project on Reddit and reportedly got a job offer out of it. But he's not done yet: He wants to add some memory to the computer and even make it "Hack" compatible, which means it would compile and run actual code (albeit very, very slowly). Said Minecraft creator Markus Persson via Twitter last night, "I saw the ALU, and I wet myself! Seriously, I got a hose and wet myself. With pee."
Working 16-bit computer built inside Minecraft

Sure, lots of players are building memories and geek tributes in the incredibly popular indie sandbox game Minecraft, but here's something actually functional: a working 16-bit ALU (arithmetic logic unit) designed entirely in the game. The "wires" are made from Redstone, a unit in the game that can carry a fiery charge. So to calculate numbers, creator "theinternetftw" just lights torches representing binary numbers on one end, and then waits to see which torches (representing binary digits) light up on the other; giving him the mathematical answer he's looking for. Crazy? Yes. Nerdy? Very. Awesome? Indeed.

Its awesome and all but I don't see any practical use for it.

Errm he got a job out of it? That seems pretty awesome in itself.

The ALU is 16-bit, to say the computer is 16-bit is just... wrong (reference to the title).
Very impressed by both Minecraft and this guy who made the ALU. I've done a processor design using CAD and I can tell you that it's incredible annoying even with assisted programs. To have done this in Minecraft must have taken immense patience.

"This is the first part of a planned 16-bit computer that will run entirely in minecraft."
He's planning to add RAM and more to it. He's going to turn this 16-bit ALU into an entire 16-bit computer.
You're right though, at the moment it is just strictly the ALU, but who cares about technicalities?

Your computer isn't rated by bits, so adding more components doesn't make the statement true. The ALU is 16-bit, end. To say that your harddrive is 16-bit, or RAM is 16-bit would be wrong. Besides, does your computer have the exact same sized components?

Seriously. And I thought drawing a a 4 bit ALU on paper took forever.

@Raiki - His patience must be godlike, or he must have OCD. I got extremely pissed off just trying to create a long fuse for my TNT out of redstone dust, and redstone torches. I ended up just making a fuse out of wool and fire.

@Captain Slender - Basically he built a gigantic calculator capable of doing one or two things (add, subtract, etc) in binary (if I listened correctly). When combined with other things (ram, HDD, etc) it could be a functioning albeit basic computer within minecraft, that can run code.
Someone did the same thing in Little Big Planet if memory serves. It takes an amazing amount of dedication to create something like this by hand (unless he did it in MCEdit... but something tells me he is legitimate)

Pretty sure the guy who did this was posting updates about how far long he was on reddit, if I'm not mistaken.

Well redstone can run almost infinite distances with the use of inverters, so he could build it outside the ship then run just the input/output inside. This would probably severely lengthen the time it takes to run, but it'd be a small price to pay.

I wonder if you could build a computer inside of Minecraft that could theoretically run Minecraft?

I guess it's time to come clean.
So this universe you're all living in? It's actually a simulation running in my universe's version of Minecraft. This is all just a low resolution copy of the real world.
