Blizzard bans over 5,000 StarCraft 2 cheaters
37
You guys just couldn't listen, could you? You're way too cool to heed the warning issued by Blizzard a few weeks ago -- you know, the one that said that StarCraft 2 hackers and modders were about to feel the crushing blow of the permabanhammer? As you might have expected, that wasn't an idle threat. Blizzard recently announced on the game's official blog that it had banned "over 5,000 StarCraft 2 players who were in violation of the Battle.net Terms of Use for cheating and/or using hack programs while playing."
This group of unfortunate, unsportsmanlike souls won't be the only ones to suffer Blizzard's retribution, as the blog update explained, "maintaining a stable, safe, and secure online-gaming experience for legitimate players is a top priority for us, and we'll be continuing to keep watch on Battle.net and take action as needed." Keep it legit, friends -- we'd hate for you to join the ranks of the damned.

I think cheating on any online matchmaking system is wrong and I don't have to play Star Craft 2 to know that.

I just do not understand why you would bother to cheat. It seems like a massive waste of time.

@Mama Luigi it IS over 9000...internet years old. One day Sam Neil and Laura Dern will be menaced by this and the keyboard cat in a crazy science park.

Just one more round of bannings and they can say they've banned over 9,000.

I love seeing gaming companies take action against online cheaters.
I wish the pokemon games were less hackable, it kind of really wrecks a lot of the fun.

If you get banned can you still play the single player game?
Posted: Oct 1st 2010 9:02PM Mal F4cti0n said
@Oppel
Nope, you cannot. It accesses Battle.net to let you in. If you have been offline for a couple of days, maybe more, it needs to validate your account before it will let you play. This happened to me as I tried to play the single player offline (not internet access where I was) and I hadn't been online in awhile. I couldn't login and the game wouldn't load.

Cheating in order to win at anything is actually quite ironic. Cheaters are pathetic losers. I say ban 'em forever, every last one of 'em.

Hacker: "Hello, ISP, Can I get a new IP address?"
ISP "Certainly Sir, Finished halfway through you asking."

@KrazyCalvin It actually blocks their battle.net account from online access, since only one is allowed per game purchased. Has nothing to do with their IP address, it has everything to do with their user id and password.

@Mystictrust So they are willing to already waste 60 dollars worth of online play for hacking, you dont think they would do it again? Another thing, blizzard cd keys sell for wow gold.

Should I make another joke about their ban level being over 9,000? jk
Honestly, I couldn't care less about Starcraft because I don't have a computer, or the money for a computer, that can run a game like that and besides that I'm complete and utter garbage at RTS games.
HOWEVER, I absolutely LOVE reading stories like this because they make me happy. To see people who ruin the experience of any game get banned is great. It's like rubbing in the fact that I'm better than them because I DIDN'T cheat.
On another note though, I really wish these people would quit warning people. Just ban them straight up. They know if they're cheat or not and if they are low enough to ruin someone else's game experience for the sake of mindlessly earned and ultimately worthless stats, then they deserve every bit of that ban hammer smashing into their face. Doesn't matter if it's the first time or the 100th time, if you cheat it doesn't matter.
Just because it's there doesn't mean you have to do it. Just because you can boost in pretty much every online FPS ever doesn't mean I have to. I didn't boost in CoD4 and I didn't boost in MW2 while I had it. I didn't boost for awards in BFBC2 by having a friend on the other team and I haven't exploited Halo: Reach's custom settings.
If I can avoid those things which aren't explicitly outlawed and technically aren't cheating, then these people can avoid running Macros and Hacks while playing their games. It's pathetic than anyone would ever feel the need to do any of this. With games going more and more towards at least partially user and automatically moderated punishments, see Halo: Reach quitting and chat solutions, hopefully these things will end completely in the future.

@oJMan240o While not having a computer is certainly a hard barrier to Starcraft II, the system requirements are surprisingly low for a brand new title. My 3.5+ year old laptop plays it just fine, although pretty much every bell and whistle must be turned off. It doesn't take much computer at all to run.

I would imagine they love doing this. It makes them look good in the community, plus a bunch of the losers that have to cheat to win use their mommy's credit card and just buy another copy of the game.

Does Blizzard still have Local Area Network gaming built into their games so you could use it with local friends? I never used it with any RTS, but it was a lot of fun doing it with Diablo and Diablo II.

lol of course they're going to ban players for cheating .... its two fold beneficial for them.
Firstly it keeps people who don't cheat happy because they are doing something about it. Which is a good thing because cheaters suck.
Secondly it makes Blizzard a crap ton of money because odds are over 50% of these cheaters are going to go down and buy another copy of the game to play on online again. But hell even if only 10% go out and buy the game again blizzard still made somewhere around 30,000 for pressing a few buttons.
