Minecraft dev's profits spawn new, six-person studio
42
When he's not flying to Valve to speak about his world-building game, Minecraft, one-man development team Marcus Persson has been spending his days lately scouting for a new office and a couple more employees. Profits from his yet-to-be-finished crafting game have already netted enough to start a development studio and hire a handful of employees. On the latest Indie Games Podcast, Persson said he's looking for "about six" employees in total, and he's got four so far.
He's also already got plans for a second game -- a title to be developed alongside Minecraft that he repeatedly points out is "going to be fairly different" from his first solo outing. Unlike Minecraft, however, Persson won't be heading up development of the second game, but one of the other folks he's working with. As for when Minecraft will be completed? He "doesn't dare" guess. Hopefully five other people will help speed up the process!

The game's been really getting the press lately. Tons of stories on Joystiq, the PA comics, Indie Gamer, PC Gamer, and tons more.
It's been a media frenzy this past month as far as I can tell, and it's only getting more and more popular.

Which is good.
I didn't learn about Machinarium until it as all over PC gamer and game informer (which I'm not condoning). That was one of my favorite games of 2009 and I'm glad I didn't miss it.

I've been having a blast with Minecraft.
Sadly I'm just starting a new job and low on money, so I'm still using the offline mode from the free weekend to get my fix, but I'm going to buy it when I start getting paid.
Also, I thought Machinarium was alright, not bad, not amazing. I guess I was just more impressed with the AAA console offerings last year.

That's pretty amazing, just last week he was a one-man team. Though his 300,000 rake-in-age was pretty impressive, I hope it's enough to sustain a 500% increase in paychecks.

If you're brave enough to do it with a hooker you're brave enough to get a girlfriend... or a boyfriend as the case may be.

I remember when there was no Alpha testing. It's fun to watch a game grow.

Hopefully one of them will make the game not crash during large TNT explosions. Until then, I'm having a ton of fun shaping explosions using adminium. By creating a huge box of it in the sky (with an open bottom) I can basically blow a targeted (and enormous) hole in the ground. If I do it in the right pattern, I can write words and what not, which is not quite as awesome as it may sound (even if I now have a gigantic "FFFUUUU" carved in the ground)
I think I'm going to go play some more while my hands recover from trying to replace the HDD on my PS3 (I've been unsuccessful in my attempts thus far. Damn these screws.)

While I think charging for an Alpha edition of a game is kind of stupid...I have to say this guy has definitely made some people think about what they are doing (or at least I hope he has)...I mean look at the people throwing millions upon millions of dollars at franchises that end up missing the mark (*cough* MW2 *cough*). This guy takes his time, effort and money and creates something that tons of people love. And sure, you may credit people like Penny-Arcade or Seananners (one of the very popular YouTubers who posted some videos right before the game exploded) but who cares? That just proves the poster who said; if you make a game that is fun and awesome you will be rewarded.
How much does this guy make without a bunch of stupid DRM BS that ends up screwing over half its users?
Anyways I am glad to see this is going somewhere and I hope more developers use this as motivation so we see more awesome games. Cause I for one and tired of the same old rinse and repeat crap...EX; Hey guys, we need to make some money...Oh yeah...How about we just throw some zombies in our game...That should sell right? So go Minecraft!

You may or may not know this, but Minecraft is actually based on an older game called Infiniminer, or something similar. Basically the other game had the same block art style and let you mess around with blocks. Minecraft took that and added crafting and a buttload of other new blocks/items/enemies/etc.
But from what I've seen of Infiniminer and with the progress Minecraft has made, by now it's probably like comparing a preschool play with the works of Shakespeare.

@sonicspike41 - I've seen the "he totally stole the game!" argument bandied about the internet, but it's so completely untrue. He took a husk of a thing and turned it into a marketable game.
I hope none of the original devs get ideas and try to milk some money out of him. He deserves it for all of the hard work.

Welcome to the indie world. Unfinished things bring in money all the time so that they CAN get finished. Would you hypothetically pay for it if he said "it's done" and you didn't know it was actually an Alpha?

@MrGreen - As would I. I'd continue developing minecraft by myself while investing the money. A couple of million dollars in the bank or in a decent fund and you could live like a king on interest alone by the beach in South America or the Pacific islands, or slightly less like a king (but still fantastic) a street or two back from the beach on one of the Caribbean islands.

@Billy Taebo Blanks Well considering the only way you can get this game is online and after your first play you can play offline >.>

@ZonChau Yeah, on the free-to-play weekend, I tried it out... and was able to play it offline for the rest of the week and probably forever.
Decided to buy it regardless because Notch deserved every bit of that €10... er... $13.51231something...
Selling it cheap for such a deep game really is where it came down to I though.

He's talking about Infiniminer, though at this point it's not even fair to compare the two. Minecraft has come so amazingly far from where it started. Just watching videos of the two games in their current states you can see just how silly it is to call it a ripoff.
