Minecraft Halloween update adds new monsters, fishing, wristwatches
49
A blog post on the official website for the biggest indie hit in all of recorded human history, Minecraft, has revealed that a whole slew of new features will be added to the title as part of a "Halloween Update." These new features are fairly wide-reaching, including new monsters (which are "actually difficult this time around"), torches which eventually extinguish over time, fishing, the ability to fast travel by moving through an (assumedly dangerous) "hell world," and a craftable wristwatch, which lets players keep track of how much time is left in the day before the baddies rear their ugly heads.
There are also a few mechanical changes to the game planned for the October 31 update as well, such as new music and sounds, a few bug fixes and additional multiplayer functionality. We sure hope you can finish your to-scale recreation of the Taj Mahal before Halloween, because, man, it sounds your build site is going to get hazardous.

Hell World reminds me of The Ways in the Wheel of Time.
Only.. probably much, much scarier. =/

@ironneko The first time a zombie *blowed* up it scared the crap out of me. "Where did this pit come from?? AHHH!"
I like the idea of fast travel by mining your way through the fabric of space time. More wormhole than teleporter. That could be way fun.

Wtf? Do you know how many times I have been killed by a creeper. Especially the first few nights. I hope this doesn't make it too difficult.
But god, that hissing sound has haunted my nightmares.

Also, looks like I'll be stocking up on iron. I imagine the lantern will be made the same as torches except with iron. Which is gonna be a real pain.

I was actually just playing and mining around. http://twitpic.com/2uool3
I don't even know how the fire started, I was way underground. Note to self: Never dig right above your head. Gravel sucks.

@Not THAT Matt
Redstone typically appears 1-5 blocks above Adminium, which is those unbreakable blocks at the bottom of the ground.
It works best when you find an already present cave system to explore. You'll usually find more valuable stones (like diamond!) that way.
If you're still unsure download MCEdit and use it to explore the world, make note of where valuable stones are, then just return to the game and mine away!

Lanterns better also be made of wood and coal, even if it's just slightly more of each. There is not enough iron in any map for a light source system to be built on that resource. Also, nobody will use torches anymore. For any reason. I know I won't. If I set a light source I expect it to be indicative of my travels, my achievements, my exploration.
This is game-changing enough that I wish I'd waited a couple of weeks before considering my purchase of the game. :/

daaaaaaamn why did he have to go and make the torches temporary? :(
There better be a permanent alternative, because otherwise it makes the game STUPIDLY harder. As in, run out of coal and you have NOWHERE to be safe at overnight.

To be honest, even though the graphics don't look the best, the amount of stuff on screen at one time can take a lot of resources. But I imagine you should be fine if you have the view distance set to low. What are your specs?

I'm running like a 2.0 ghz Pentium III with 800mb of RAM, something along those lines. 32mb ATI Rage graphics card.
Let me put it like this, Vice City runs choppy, but a game like Jedi Knight III for example runs fine.
It obviously wasn't meant for any serious gaming, that's for sure.

You should be able to run it. You should definitely upgrade your ram eventually though.

I've heard that the lanterns will replace the torch, so everywhere you have lit will stay lit.
But this is just hearsay.

Also, I'm I the only one not keen on the fast travel? Half the fun was making a compass, heading out and setting up small camps around the place, bunny hopping around the map looking for goodies?

Screw the bit about the torches. If he's going to do that then he needs to put some spawning coal blocks in the game. I'm going to be pissed when I race home at night to find my house completely dark and monsters inside of it.
How are we supposed to hop across the map and move out into the world if we have to be worried about not having a safe haven? That's going to pervert the exploration and sense of accomplishment that comes with clearing and lighting an area and knowing that it's yours and yours alone.
I can program Java and I'll be damned if I don't go in and take that out the second it goes live.

@oJMan240o Quite. I want to know I've beaten and secured that cave and I can loot it's goodies at will. That and I mark routes between major camp and mine shaft entrances with touches (two torches next to each other marks the way I came in, and where to get out if I have to run for it).

ahh can't wait for this update, looks so awesome.
torches that die out are badly needed, will help for the survival aspect.
would be nice if permanent torches will be kept for peaceful/easy difficulty, as there's plenty of people who like it.
