I'm one of the rare breed that greatly enjoyed Final Fantasy 13, but even I'm not interested in more of Lightning. She was a really boring character. I might be up for more FF13-universe games, though.

All the characters were boring and generic. Not just Lightning.

Same goes for FFXII though the characters did at least have more to them in XIII.
Wonder when Square-Enix will make a decent one again...

@Electrium The main character of FF13 was actually Vanille; she was the narrator, the one who knew everything from the beginning, the one who caused the whole thing to happen, and the catalyst that made the end the way it was.

They just billed Lightning as the main character because they thought people would respond better to her. Focus group'd.

(p.s. maybe if Vanille didn't audibly orgasm every time she had an emotion, said something, or used a spell or attack, maybe I would've liked her a lot more. :P)

Yeah I did really like how only during the final cutscene did I understand what the logo was.
That was really smart for me.

I liked the game and the characters!

But in the next game don't have Vanille make orgasm/sighing sounds all the time, it is extremely embarrassing.

@Ryuk Yep, decent RPG. Terrible Final Fantasy. I didn't care for FFXII either. In fact, I suspect I would have enjoyed both immensely more if I wasn't waiting for it to feel like FF.

I even went in playing knowing that it wouldn't, but I really want a FF feeling game. I can get RPGs easily in other forms and you just don't mess with the FF formula THAT much. Might as well make a new RPG and call it something else.

Square and Enix used to be RPG powerhouses. Ever since they joined together JRPG gaming died a little. Especially this generation.

They need to go back to the tried and true formula of making classics and leaving the experimentation to other games that can actually turn into great IPs themselves. I think more people would want a second einhander (zweihander) a true Parasite Eve sequel, a true Star Ocean game, and the list can go on - before they'd want another Final Fantasy.

Unless of course said fantasy brought back truly open world maps and more traditional gameplay that's more fresh than reimagined.

I remember them saying that they had too big of ambitions for an open world. The PS2 wouldn't be able to handle it. Well, we're on to the PS3 now and if an NES could handle it, a friggin PS3 sure could.

Yeah I honestly think they are thinking of it all wrong when people say they want world maps.
I honestly wouldn't mind a little tiny character running around on normal size level kinda thing like in the old ones.
I don't know how they think it would be so hard? Just make 1 level area, shrink the main character and boom! A world map lol

Why are you talking about square enix and star ocean? square enix never made star ocean so they don't have much of a say in where that series goes.

Plenty of people liked Final Fantasy XIII, it just wasn't what many of the Final Fantasy fans were used to. FFXIII definitely sold well enough to support a series, and Versus XIII is supposed to be similar to Kingdom Hearts in terms of gameplay, which has a lot of people excited.

I see what you're saying, but it's not easy making classics. Squenix just can't strike gold anymore. Honestly, and I'll probably get lynched for this, but I live Final Fantasy XII. It's at the top of my list as one of the best entries in the series. The voice acting was superb, the characters were all believable and the battle system - as boring, as some call it - was top notch. I have faith in SE, I really do, but they're made some bone-head moves recently that get me upset as a fan.
Oh, and one more thing, I'm not hating on your preference, but I need to ask: Star Ocean?! Really? Those games are trash. Played the first two on the PSOne, I bought the third one (total joke), and actually came around in finishing the 4th one. Only because the battle system is awesome, though. ^__^
Tri-Ace can't make good games. They've only done it once: Valkyrie Profile.

@SpecDotSign Well, FFXII was a fun game but the story - usually a hallmark of the series, was beyond terrible. I mean, THE WORST I've had the pain of going through for some time now.

Star Ocean only came out on the PS1 once, I don't even think the first one was re-released on it in Japan, either. You might be mixing series, perhaps. I'll be the first to admit that the series is shaky, but there's promise in it if they could do it right.

Square was able to make several classics in a row: FF IV, V (very popular in Japan), VI, VII, VIII, (now that people realize it wasn't a sequel for VII they understand how good it really is) IX (some say) and X (I say)

I don't see why they couldn't get back on track. Hell, I'd love a game like Chrono Cross again. Awful trigger "sequel" but just an awesome game otherwise. Great music, gameplay, depth, everything. Just a shame they tried to pass it off as a Chrono sequel. Then again, some of my favorite music in that game wouldn't have been used then, so sunrise - sunset.

Star Ocean First Departure is a port, so being a port, it may be a definitive title, but it's not the BEST in the series if it's been done before.

Also, I enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII, enough to platinum it, and I'm not a hardcore Final Fantasy fan. I can just appreciate a good game for what it is without comparing it to other games. So it's more linear, so are overrated titles like God of War. So it's battle system is different, I'M GLAD because it shows variety in the series. So the story is somewhat confusing to some (not to me), it's at least an original one.

Monkey D Luffy, if you don't mind telling me, what makes Final Fantasy XIII bad?

Got love the anti fanboys when it comes to FF13 , keybladesman made perfectly good points in a non agreesive way and gets voted down, simply because he said he liked the game.

Seriously are people here not able to recognize that *shock horror* people like differenet games!!!

I finished FF13, got bored and never finished fallout3 (i thought THAT had no interesting characters and a weak story tbh, but thats what i think about it, i accept that others will think different)

Seriosuly why does the fact that people like a FF game cause so much anger amoungst poster?

I would totally get XIII-2. I don't get why everyone complains about XIII. What was wrong with it? The gameplay was okay, there was nothing wrong with the story, the characters were a bit flat but it was still a great game. Everyone compares it to other FF games, saying it sucks compared to them, but how? Better graphics? Linear storyline? Oh my god, they didn't throw in a town or two! Wow, that's so terrible! Square-Enix can make whatever they want to make, and if they want to go toward story-based games *coughKH2cough* then leave them to the people who will actually enjoy them and not the people who will look for any little detail to criticize. Maybe you should switch to Nintendo where the stories suck but the gameplay rocks. And don't worry KH fans. KH3 will come out. Nomura stated that KH will continue like FF, that KH3 will only end the first trilogy, and that a new game will come out each year until KH3. He's doing his best to satisfy you.

Peace, haters. Long live Square-Enix.
