This is actually better than NBA Elite, I'm happy I don't have to pay 60 bucks for garbage + treasure.

This looks awesome. Screw it. I am getting the Wii version. PS3/Xbox version will probably be the suck and over priced.

"For instance, more often than not, your defensive maneuvers will knock the ball out of an opponent's grasp -- and into the grasp of your other opponent, much to your chagrin (or rage, depending on how many times this situation occurs in a single game)"

Griffin must have hated the Kill the Carrier mode in NFL Street 2. I personally think that the added chaos is a plus, but maybe my opinions will change once I've played it. I'm holding out for the PS3 version, hopefully they get this out soon. Long live Tim Kitzrow!

Sure they can replicate the gameplay....but can they replicate the ridiculous setup for my old SNES with a boomerang shaped multi-tap and 4 wired controllers....all wired to a 15" Color TV that weighed 80lbs....

NEVER!!!!

I seriously can't think of anyone who didn't love NBA JAM or NFL BLITZ in the early 90s.....

Blitz was late nineties. It was all about Tecmo Super Bowl in the early nineties. And pretty much every baseball game. And a bit of late eighties RBI Baseball for good measure.

I could have sworn I cut the third sentence out. Oh well, no harm in mentioning baseball games twice. This was when they were almost all fun as hell anyways, where you push a single button to pitch and swing. Those were the days ...

Tecmo Super Bowl, Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball, NBA Jam and NBA Live 96. I don't know if modern sports games are as much fun. Although I have to admit that I am a Madden Fan, but I refuse to purchase the game every year.

Blitz was garbage. NBA Jam Tournament Edition wasn't much fun either. I'm tempted to give NBA2K11 a try to get back into basketball games. I'll wait for NBA jam on the 360 just to play on a better controller.

Question for Joystiq: Will you guys be reviewing the 360/PS3 versions of NBA Jam as well?

@Mr Fister It depends on what the final 360/PS3 package is like. My inclination would be "No," just because I imagine the two will be so similar.

If there isn't a video game hall of fame, the original should be one of the first inductees. Seriously, NBA Jam, original MK series, Ninja Gaiden, those kinds of games defined my youth, glad to see this one coming back. I thought it wasn't come out for anything but Wii, has that changed at some point? or was I just remember it was coming out for Wii way before the others?

@TexRob It was originally announced as a Wii exclusive, then it was announced that a stripped down downloadable version was going to come free with the 360 & PS3 versions of NBA Elite but not sold on XBLA or PSN and then finally, when Elite was canned (or, should I say "delayed indefinitely"), it was announced that it would be sold for the 360 & PS3, though EA is sidestepping saying whether it will still be downloadable or whether it will now be a full retail game (which is what most are speculating because EA will want to recuperate some of their losses from "indefinitely delaying" Elite).

It was a Wii exclusive title, but now the PS3/Xbox versions are in a rush to come out for the Holidays to include pretty much everything the Wii has .... this is good news.

Metroid, Punch-Out, Tetris, Tecmo Bowl, Super Mario Bros, Sonic, Mega-Man, Kid Icarus, Elevator Action, Icari Warriors, Bubble Bobble, and oh .... Double Dribble pretty much defined my youth in games. That was when games were simple, fun, and addicting.

I would love it if he just read it plainly or said it with absolutely no emotion, like the original. Actually, that should have been an unlockable announcer!

"He passes it to the man, he shoots it, and boom goes the dynamite."

The key to many of the 20-million sellers of this generation has been about reaching out to people who are grossly indifferent to the more intricate arms of gaming, so EA could still have something here

At least, if they weren't trying to undermine the Wii version as much as humanly possible

Realistically the people you're talking about won't likely care about the things that are missing from the Wii version. Everyone else will be picking up one of the other versions.

I still don't understand why this isn't a downloadable title. As a $15 XBLA, PSN, WiiWare game it makes complete sense.

As a full priced retail game, it wreaks of failure. I'm not saying the game is bad. I just don't see it being a hit at retail.

It was probably too big to be put on WiiWare even without all the extra modes (40MB cap limit, and it sounds like they have way too much content for a simple compressing job), and the 360/PS3 versions going retail implies that the entire game wouldn't have fit on XBLA/PSN, although it could also be that EA made it a retail game to help compete with NBA 2K11.

I second that motion. While a "full" review is probably unnecessary, I would still like to get an overall feel/comparison of the new Xbox/PS3 game vs the Wii. I know I'm not alone on this at all--especially since a lot of gamers are waiting for the other versions to become available even if those same gamers own a Wii (such as I do).

Seriously though...get this to my 360 now please.
