Heavenly Sword 2 could have gone to Hell
69
With Enslaved now wrapped up, Ninja Theory's Tameem Antoniades answered a few questions from VG247's readers. One asked about the possible direction a sequel to the team's previous game, Heavenly Sword, could take. (Spoiler alert!) The death of the first game's heroine, Nariko, obviously poses a challenge.
According to Antoniades, one idea had players discovering Nariko "trapped in Hell by the spirit of the sword." Coming to her rescue would be Kai, playable in the real world and somehow able to "communicate with Nariko and try and help rescue her soul." Fascinatingly, the potential sequel would have played with the movement of time -- one day in Hell represents a year on Earth -- and as such, Kai would transform from "teenage girl to old woman" throughout the course of the game.
The Voices of a Distant Star approach to the game's storytelling could have made for an interesting, thought-provoking journey. (Certainly more so than EA's Dante's Inferno.) However, it's unlikely this concept will ever come to fruition. Last we heard, Ninja Theory is no longer involved with the series.

Holy hell. I forgot how hot Nariko is. Thank you for reminding me, Joystiq!
Also, they should make this instead of messing with that THING they call "DmC".

Well I see no problem with the more gritty Dante. I for one found the old Dante kind of cocky & arrogant. I mean yeah, I know that's how he's supposed to be that way but I just feel that now he has room to grow & since he has a more darker back story, it makes him have more depth.

yea Nariko was hot and voiced by Fringe star, Anna Torv, who is hot herself.
anyway, i loved the first one and was disappointed to hear they weren't making another one but i guess the ending was pretty final anyway, so it's whatever i guess.

Not really our fault. People don't read words in order. They see the entire sentence at once. It's just how the mind works. This spoiled it for me too before I even saw the warning. It should've been more clearly marked or the spoiler put after the jump.

I agree that this is not typical for how spoiler alerts are made, and they ought to have some kind of style guide for those.
Doesn't bother me in this case, but a lot of folks take it seriously, while skimming articles, and would easily be spoiled.

@CaptainProtonX It came out 3 years ago. if you haven't played it yet, you weren't planning on playing it anytime soon.

And also, for everyone bitching about this (more below), what are you doing reading stories about a theoretical sequel if you don't want the first one spoiled? Any story, about any sequel, will potentially contain spoilers of the stories are at all related.

I agree. If you know the original is three years old and still plan to play it (and don't want it spoiled), why would you read an article about a potential sequel?
You would have to assume the article may not be very cautious about avoiding spoilers.
Anyhow, like others have said, it's not really a spoiler as you pretty much know it from the beginning (it's either implied strongly or explicitly stated early on).

One of my favorite games. It was graphically amazing, the battles were on an epic scale, I loved the asian inspiration...It's sucks that this will never be made. Maybe like ICO or Beyond Good and Evil this will get dug back up. It's in the same class and deserves the same attention. I believe Nariko could be a Kratos for PS3 if marketed right. The game came out too early in PS3's life cycle with too few users.

I never could finish this game, that damn end boss always kills me so fast. However I thoroughly enjoyed what I have played and I am sad that it was so short and that nothing will come after.

The original game lasted approx. 35 seconds, so, assuming it was made in hell, and with the time translation, that's roughly 40 hours of gameplay.
Game seems like a much better value now.

I hope Sony brings this back from the dead. Hopefully to a dev who knows how to model hair that doesn't look like dreads (and from the look of Enslaved, they still haven't figured it out).

GAH I HATE their hair! I don't know what engine Heavenly Sword was made on but I keep on thinking the reason the chick in Enslaved has her hair like that is because of the Unreal 3 engine being a piece of crap.
But seriously, fix that hair!

I Miss You Nariko :( Curse You Ninja Theory ! I seriously think this game should have a 2nd chance the first may not have done well but i loved it the way it was. Now as for people who hated it maybe fix it up and then with new trophy support it may sell even better with even better marketing .. not only that but WAY WAY WAY more people have PS3 now then when the first game came around !

Interesting story ideas...no mention of gameplay improvements.
Sounds like Ninja Theory alright. I'd rent this game if it came out. That's about it.

Well, it's rather hard to believe that Ninja Theory doesn't want to work on the title at all. Just look at the attention the game is still getting even though it's been 3 years since it was released. If anything, they're letting a good, potential franchise go to waste.
Now the question would be: ¿Why isn't sony, themselves, doing anything about it? They could, potentially, hire an existing team and ask them if they could direct a sequel to this game.
