- Game Informer (90/100): "This polished, action-packed adventure has me ecstatic to see not only what's in store for the next 3D Castlevania, but also what talented developer MercurySteam does next. Don't let the deluge of fall releases or the 3D Castlevania stigma keep you from this amazing quest."
- Eurogamer (80/100): "In the future, we can only hope that a developer finds a way to deliver more of the core series components – of buildings that you piece together through exploration, of back-tracking that never seems like a chore. For now, though, even with a missing piece of that magnitude, MercurySteam has managed to deliver a game that's heartfelt, handsome, and quietly distinct."
- Gamespot (75/100): "The combat is great and the boss battles are quite memorable, but it degenerates when those core ideas clash--when Castlevania ignores what it does so well (action) for the sake of creating a more diverse experience."
- IGN (75/100): "Pretty much anything you would expect to find in a Castlevania game is not to be found here. But fans of combat-heavy action adventure games will have fun if they can excuse a lot of mindless button mashing and a couple technical issues."
- 1UP (B): "This won't replace Symphony of the Night as the oft-argued greatest Castlevania, but it should finally at least put to rest complaints that there are no good 3D Castlevania games. If Lords of Shadow sees a sequel, there are lots of important, obvious improvements that need to be made, but Mercury Steam proves that they're at least on the right track."
Metareview: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

Now that you've read our review of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow -- you have, haven't you? -- let's find out what other outlets thought of the series' latest stab at a 3D interpretation. Turns out, it would seem there are some issues reconciling this as a "Castlevania" game. If we had control of space and time (and, believe, we're working on it), we'd totally want to see the scores if Castlevania was completely removed from the title and the game was released just as Lords of Shadow. It may have scored just a little higher.

What about this: "But fans of combat-heavy action adventure games will have fun if they can excuse a lot of mindless button mashing.." Guess IGN disagrees with every other review out there that states the exact opposite, including Joystiq.

@ThatStuffsLethal Yes, i read gamespot review, god it was so bad and harsh. Looks like they put an Castlevania 2D super fanboy to make the review. The whole thing were 10 minutes of a guy whinning about the game not being a real Castlevania tittle and looking too much like GoW and Shadow Of The Colossus, complaining about the camera system (Hello!!! have you ever played a hack n' slash)... to just admit in the end that the game has an amazing combat system and great boss battles.

Pretty good scores so far.
Though I'm anxiously awaiting Jim Sterling's review. He's been bashing it all day on Twitter. I'm expecting a 4-5 from him.

@Ezio Auditore da Firenze Scores are good, but it seems like Joystiq's review overrated this game compared to most other sites.

@Ezio Auditore da Firenze - I, honestly, don't even listen to Destructoid anymore. The majority of their reviews I don't even agree with, and most of the editorials shouldn't even be called that.
Yahtzee is the only reviewer with the "accent" that I'll listen to. He's dead honest, and much funnier than the Jimquisition.

I find Eurogamer's scores to be bat shit crazy half the time. They're usually way below the average and then out of the blue they'll be near the top for a specific game. It almost seems like they just want a controversial score more than anything else.

I want to try it eventually. I hated the Metroidvania style. I like my Castlevania fairly linear.
Castlevania 3 is the greatest Castlevania of all time. Of all time.

@Cleric I don't HATE SoTN but I do not think it's the best, that title goes to Castlevania: Rondo of Blood... and this game, IMHO feels a lot LIKE RoB.

This game has completely blown my expectations out of the water. XD
Its freakin amazing. The sound, the music and the environment! ungh!
Every second I play this I feel like I'm going through this ridiculous epic journey. I haven't felt this way about a game in a long time. I went and read a bit of reviews and everybody is saying how this is not a "typical" castlevania. What do they mean? Why is it that the default castlevania game has to be symphony of the night? Simon's Quest was the only one that wasn't linear until sotn came along.

with the stage design and chapters and linear corridors, I'd say this comes as close to the original Simon Belmont games on the NES......so why reviews are saying it's not Castlevania is beyond me

But does it really feel like Castlevania? That goes much deeper than linear vs non-linear. For example, the 2D Marios are all linear but you wouldn't say they feel like Castlevania games, right? So just because they went back to a linear level layout doesn't automatically make them true to Castlevania's roots.
Anyway, I haven't played the game yet, but it's next on my Gamefly list. So I'll see for myself then. But I just wanted to make that point because I keep seeing people talk about how the linearity of the game makes it true to Castevania as if the linearity were the sole factor in making that determination.

@Vidikron I just got done beating the game. Don't listen to what anybody says about it. Forget what you have heard. It has been a very long time since I have had this much appreciation from a game. This is how it should feel like when you finish something. Accomplishment and amazed at the journey you just went through. I'm still coming off of this high. I think the only other game that has made me feel this way after beating it is Metal Gear Solid 4. If that means anything to you.

I think the game is a lot of fun. It's gorgeous, it's atmospheric and it's enjoyable.
I wish there was more actual exploration and hunting for new areas, etc... but people seem to forget that this series also has Castlevania, Castlevania III, Super Castlevania IV, Bloodlines, Dracula X, etc. These are at their heart simply just really good action games. I think this has more in common with those than games like SotN, which isn't necessarily bad. At least to me.

I don't know why this game can't just be reviewed for what it is. At one point it wasn't even called Castlevania. Let's just review the game on the "is it fun or not" scale.

I'm on Ch 4. Fun game. Reminds me a lot of Darksiders (a game that took a lot from other games but also has it's own flavor) . It's a much better game than Darksiders was though.

Simon's Quest is the best classic Castlevania and at the time it was a complete departure of the original's linear gameplay. Change can be good. Can't wait to try this one.

This sums it up perfectly.
A fine action game that has close to absolutely nothing to do with Castlevania.

Wrong. It is Castlevania through and through. Don't get lost looking to collect weapon drops and to whip candles for hearts and turkeys. Castlevania was always much more than that.

I have a couple of problems with the game but "not being Castlevania" is certainly not one of them. In tone, this is what I grew up with and I'm happy as hell to see it back.

My only real gripe so far is the camera controls. It's a bit -too- much like God of War when it should really be more like Bayonetta or Darksiders as far as how it handles. Otherwise it's pretty awesome.

I guess they're referring to the *original* Castlevania, released in 1997, starring the main character of the series, Alucard.

I don't get what all the hate is about. To me it feels like Super Castlevania 4 in 3D. I'm on chapter 5 and so far the game has done nothing but amaze me the whole time. Combat is great and fluid, story is pretty good and the graphics are amazing. Plus it's tough. Some of the bosses will kick your ass 5 ways to Tuesday. Which is fine. Challenge is good.
I'm guessing it's the metroidvania fans complaining. If anything this series got a proper reboot with this game.

These score are a disgrace from the same people giving Bayonetta flawless ratings.
This is a proper Castlevania, in 3d. Kudos, Konami. Worthy of nothing but praise. The reviewers can all go and blow it out their ears.
