We've been hearing murmurings about a sequel to 2007's The Darkness since back in 2008 when the property's creator -- comic book company Top Cow Productions -- hinted about one at the New York Comic Con. Fast-forward to this morning and we're once again back at the Jacob Javits Center on NYC's west side bugging Top Cow about The Darkness 2. "There are certain rights issues that we needed to clear up in order to move ahead with The Darkness 2. Those are getting cleared up. While there are no specific plans, it is definitely that is still on all of our minds," sales and marketing director Atom! Freeman explained to us this morning.
We pushed for confirmation that a sequel to The Darkness is still being planned. "Absolutely. We loved the game. The fans loved the game," he told us, adding, "There's no reason to not do another one. Just making sure that all of our ducks are in a row so that we can begin that process." Unfortunately, that's all Freeman would tell us, preferring to keep other information ... shrouded in darkness for now.

Same here. The first game is one of my favorite FPS games this generation. I'm just hoping that they can significantly improve multiplayer for the sequel.

I can't wait for part 2. Part 1 was the best when using the demonic power on the bad guys.

I liked most of it but I thought the last part was annoying. Sneaking past the zombies and all.... Man! I almost forgot about this game entirely..

I knew it was coming.
They'll have to improve a number of things before I take a jump like that again, the darkness theme, original, the way the darkness was utilised, not so original :(

Too bad it will (might?) likely take forever to come out, because the first one was fun. I remember it as being one of the first shooters that I ever actually had FUN with, not just played through and went "yeah, that was pretty alright. but I'd rather have played an RPG."

Starbreeze better be doing it if that's the case.
Those guys are extremely talented.

No doubt. Their reputation from Riddick was all I went on to buy The Darkness. It didn't seem like a lot of people bought it, but I was really surprised by how much fun I had with it. There were some tedious parts, but so many unique elements. Just sitting on the couch with your girlfriend for a while watching TV... It sounds stupid, but when she finally kicked it, I was genuinely upset with the game and the storywriters. I felt wronged, and confused, and a little incredulous. Nothing in videogames has given me that again.

The original was good, but glitchy as anything. First play through I managed to just skip an entire chapter of the game without even realising it.

One of my first marathon gaming instances on my 360 was with The Darkness. Loved it.
(The others were Fallout 3 and Crackdown, for the record.)

I always felt that The Darkness was one of those brilliant games, that no one heard of because of other games that released at the same time. It was fantastic though!

I enjoyed the Darkness it wasn't anything special, but was fun.

Game had such an atmosphere of sorrow. It really made the player feel the tedium and dreary existence of the city's inhabitants. Like sorrowful broken cattle going through the motions until the final unceremonious and inevitable end. Haunting.

I really enjoyed the first one, but its very much a hidden gem. I bought it on clearance for $3. I tried to use pretty much anything except the guns, since the demon powers are what made the game so different from standard FPSes. Good art direction, unique story for a FPS, great value game. I never got tired of using my tentacle to impale people or toss cars at them.

Don't forget about all the cool little gremlin guys. And their specialized outfits; the lumberjack, and fireman, and some other stuff I can't remember. All with different melee weapons for wreaking mayhem. That was this game, right?

Oh this is fantastic news indeed.
The game had SO much going for it, great characters, great story, good gameplay, fantastic atmosphere.
I especially loved the Bitter-sweet use of the Darkness powers, they were so fun to use, but on the other hand, it was using something that was outright ruining the main characters life.
Mike Patton and Kirk Acevedo better return to do voice work!

I picked this game up during the summer new for $10 and was absolutely blown away. It was a very immersive, atmospheric and different take on a first person shooter. I was more involved with the story then any other FPS this generation, it's too bad it was overlooked.

one of the most under appreciated games this generation--so glad to see they're considering a sequel. i just hope that this time around, starbreeze drops that damned multiplayer. it did nobody any favors. :P

Had a whole comment written out, but once again the Joystiq Comments Monster ate it whole. Thanks a lot, JCM.
Anyway. The Darkness was flawed, but fascinating, and I would love to play a sequel. Please let Starbreeze do it, though. They had a vision.

Simply LOVED the first game and been wondering if a sequel was even bandied about but I guess it has been, which is great.
The other day, I cleaned up my PS3 shelf with massive trade-ins at Best Buy (better values than Gamestop, fooohhh shoooooohhh) and even looking at my copy of The Darkness invoked, "Awwhh, HEYEELLL NAAWW!" type of thought from one side of my brain when the other considered giving it up. I have actually played through the first game almost 2 times which is an extreme rarity for me to even do, these days. Not a kid anymore and I don't have the desire or time, for that matter, but still, The Darkness is a classic that will NEVER leave my shelf.
