Adweek reports that inside sources at Microsoft have confirmed that Massive Inc., a Microsoft-owned advertising firm with a focus on in-game marketing, will be shut down by its parent company before the end of the month. The reasons for Massive's waning business are apparently twofold: Apparently, Microsoft favors advertising directly on the Xbox Live dashboard, as the company keeps all of the ad revenue, while Massive must split its revenue with publishers. In addition, sources told Adweek that EA's recent decision to keep in-game ads in-house stripped Massive of some of its largest clients.
The price at which Microsoft purchased Massive Inc. in 2006 is estimated to be between $200 million and $400 million, both of which are a great deal of money. The firm faced its fair share of hardships last year, when its parent company laid off more than one quarter of its staff. We've contacted Microsoft for a comment on the report.
Update: A Microsoft spokesperson responded to our query with a boilerplate "Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation."

Seriously, did someone slap Steve Ballmer? There's been a lot of cutting of dead or non-profitable ventures within MS recently...

Don't patronise me, dude. Read my comment again - I'm commenting on the recent surge of these moves within Microsoft, such as the death of Windows Live Spaces and the rebirth of IE.
PS: If you are going to try and insinuate that somebody is stupid, at least check your comment for spelling mistakes.

Oh well. Massive was apparently pretty good at the in-game ad stuff, so we might be getting more obtrusive stuff in the future.

MS loves putting money into a black hole ALL THE TIME,
Really, the missteps are stacking up.

Microsoft also announced that they will start making their employees pay for some of their health insurance, instead of being all free.
If you ask me, Microsoft finally noticed they can't keep squandering money.
Quick, someone dent the can of green beans. Microsoft is down two points!

Microsoft sure knows how to overpay for their assets. I guess one of the good things about being almost a monopoly is that you can spend money like crazy and if you get into a little bit of trouble just cut some employees because you can always make up for it.

Bah, I've lost more money than that between my couch cushions. Now, excuse me while I use my gold toothbrush with bald eagle feather bristles to get ready for a smashing ball I'm off to at bill gates' fall home.

That's because Microsoft hates anything with the name Massive in it... which is why they continue to destroy any possibility of an MMO coming out on the 360 platform.

My 2 cents, MS in my opinion is heading in a bad direction. I know it sounds crazy but I just dont understand what their goal is anymore or what they are trying to accomplish in the tech world. Windows 7 thank god it is a good release or else they would really be in bad shape. I see more and more people on macs everyday and if google explodes chrome os like android, I think you can say MS is in real trouble. Kin was a complete flop that disappeared really fast. I think people, including myself are losing faith in MS. 360 is a good console but........... come on its completely half fast compared to the software backing MS has. The xbox should for 1 not die, 2 should be my media center PC. I really think WP7 might be a huge flop. Android is strong and only getting stronger year over year. Gaming wise well I dont game on my phone so I cant comment on that but Iphone will have it beat and word is android new release will be focused on that and that might release before wp7. All I can say is MS quick taking people money and not delivering to the fullest like you could or my next OS will be Mac or Google. So far Android is dope and I dig that google hooks it up with a ton of free software. Ads dont bother me if i get to keep my money for other things.
