"I have never played a Deus Ex game."

You owe it to yourself to go do this NOW. The first game holds up shockingly well in every way.

@Mach2 :: In certain ways the game has impressive qualities, but it has aged heaps (for obvious reasons, which would be unfair to hold against it). Mostly only the original players may-still appreciate it, of which you must be one of.

This new episode in the series looks very good anyway.

@Mach2 100% Agreed. I wish it had aged better though. Shame they didn't do a 10-year anniversary edition, much like Settlers 2 or Tomb Raider.

Obviously, the game has aged technically. The graphics are definitely pretty dated, I don't think many people will disagree with that. Still, the gameplay really does hold up remarkably well. As long as a person can stand to look at low-poly models and low-res textures, I don't think they'll find that it will feel very old.

I suppose some people might be upset about having to manage an inventory, but I would say that says more about the player than the game.

Actually there is a mod out to update the graphical quality of the game. I don't have the link, but it shouldn't be all that hard to find. Thats the advantage the PC game has over the PS2 game (which I have sadly...)

@delicatessen lama I played the first game a few months ago for the first time and didnt mind the graphics at all. The gameplay alone made it one of the best games I've ever played. The second game didnt hold up as well in my opinion though.

@delicatessen lama I also played Deus Ex for the first time a week ago. If you are someone who has the mindset of game-play > graphics, I would say it holds up against any modern day game, if not better. Thinking back all the FPSs I have played seem like crap now compared to Deus Ex.

if you play it for the first time in 2010, it certainly does not hold up, I consider it lying to say Deux Ex holds up today, get a hold of yourself ... *mumbles* must be overexcited ... holds up today ...

With all due respect to the fans of the game, it really hasn't aged that well.
I've listened to my friends go on about how incredible and revolutionary that game was, but when I actually played it . . . I barely lasted an hour.
All the mechanics felt so painfully awkward comparing to all the modern games.
I get it, nostalgia is a bitch. Every once in while I'll download a random game that I played as a kid and do my best to explain to my friends how great it is while I play it with a huge smile on my face but the truth is - those old games you loved when you were young are never as good as you remembered them.

How many times could you have gotten augments in less than an hour? Clearly this is not your kind of game, the problem definitely isn't Deus Ex.
It was 2005 when I played Deus Ex, and it was dated then. But it's definitely one of the best games ever made.
But I was young once, and I respect that it's exciting to hate something even when it's good just so you can be too cool for school.

@Erluti I still remember killing one of the main characters, which you obviously weren't supposed to kill, in some weird way between cutscenes. I expected them to reappear in the next cutscene, but they remained mysteriously absent for the rest of the game. Non of this "can't shoot-crosshairs" crap. Brilliant!

My my, this has been a busy comment thread.

Let my point out to everyone that my comment was made by someone who only just played the game over winter 2009-10. It's something that takes a bit of time to get used to, indeed, and of course quite a few mechanics felt a bit dated (and the graphics, natch) but I was completely enthralled. I never caught myself thinking "damn, if only it had this feature" or "if only it let me do this..." and that's something very few games have accomplished.

My main problem with the second Deus Ex was that it felt so "confined" compared to the first one. Hope this one opens it up again.

It's both. You play mostly in a FPS perspective, but certain actions (i.e. hand to hand combat, similar stuff) trigger a TPS view.

This game sounds fantastic to say the least. Just watching the two CGI trailers was enough to sell me on the game.

My friend is gonna go nuts over this, he loves the whole your choices/consequences deal. Gives obvious replayability if done correctly and kinda personalises your play through.

The original Deus Ex ranks as either No. 1 or No. 2 as the best video game I've ever played. (System Shock II is what it flip-flops with). Thoughtful, atmospheric and challenging, and deliciously paranoid.

Any copies of Deus Ex: Invisible War (aka Deus Ex 2) should be incinerated on sight. I had more fun tossing the corpses in the basketball net than actually trying to deal with the oversimplified story and action. "Hi! You're one of the latest spies from Hogwarts Academy! I'm with the Illuminati! We just recruited your classmate Julia! Would you like to see our health benefits?" Even the secret toilet world easter egg wasn't enough redemption.

DX3 has a lot on its shoulders, but it would take effort to be a bigger fark up than Invisible War.

PS still wish for a System Shock III -- Bioshock is good, but I still want to kill off SHODAN.

@(Unverified) In before people blow Deus Ex Invisible War's shortcomings out of proporti ... oh hamburgers.

Invisible War is an EXCELLENT game, the Chrono Cross to my Chrono Trigger if you will. It gets way too much undeserved hate for taking a slightly different approach to a predecessor that set the bar unattainably high and for being 'consolized.'

You Invisible War detractors are cretins who will never be pleased with anything!

But we were pleased with the first game. And saying that we won't ever be pleased with a sequel doesn't make sense, either, when you consider that we almost all love System Shock 2 as well!

As a huge Deus Ex fan, this sounds great. It's rare to see a game that actually does a good job with choice these days, but based on this, DX3 may very well live up to the standard established by the original. Reading through this, I can imagine that this is some lost chapter of the first game, which is really, really high praise.

I'm also still hoping that you also have many choices for exactly how you proceed once you choose a "kill everybody" approach, like you do in DX1. (Machine guns? Sniper rifles? Proximity mines?) This, I think, is largely dependent on how the areas are designed. Tight corridors make sniper rifles mostly useless, wide open fields make shotguns mostly useless. The bit about finding hiding places is pretty encouraging, though!

.... by providing your full response at the bottom of the screen. That way, there's no confusion over what your character will say when selecting an option.

Oh, yeah, THAT, totally. In Mass Effect sometimes Shepard would answer some totally different stuff and I would go WTF?

I dunno, I think I prefer just reading the paraphrase and then listening to the character speak the actual response. More cinematic that way. Nothing is more tedious than having a character speak out a sentence you've already finished reading.

That's why Dragon Age wouldn't have benefited (much) from a voiced protagonist unless they did the paraphrase system like Mass Effect -- which, thankfully, is what they're doing with DA2.

I could see how it'd be frustrating if your intentions are wrong and the response was key to something happening or not happening, but for the most part I'd prefer not to know what's going to be said simply because it keeps my interest levels up, as opposed to skipping the dialogue.

Hmm... what kind of laser defense are we talking about? Just a "walk through and trigger alarms" kind of defense, or the kind that'll burn off your pinky before you say "Mr Jenson"?

I have fond memories of being low on health, having to get through a damaging defensive grid, and using my augment-strength boosters to push an object, and hold it in place, while I slipped through.

@Luckyduke24 I've never played Dues Ex either, but I saw it being Demo'd at New York Comic con today and I REALLLY liked it. The one thing that worried me is that the demo they showed had a stage select so it's clearly not an open world game, which I don't mind but it really enforces the feelings that all the cool actions you want to do might be limited to what the stage will allow. Like sure you can sneak into a building through a window but will it always have to be the same window?
