What is the price of this, it's not listed in the sidebar like normal?

At the right price, I'm still willing to try it. Even poorly implemented, it seems like it should be fun, particularly in co-cop, jamming out with my wife or kid.

Also, how does it handle which zombie you are attacking? Is it always the top one, or is there some way to switch between enemies?

@Courtney

$40 and it looks like whatever string of "notes" you play, it eleminates that zombie regardless which is closest. They do all have different button variations over them and he said he'd take out the most complex first..

That's what was confusing to me, that he said he would target the hardest ones, but I wasn't sure how that worked.

It's like the House of the Dead game where you type, but instead you're playing the guitar. I like the idea of it. But I won't buy it...

How is it MORE difficult to read the notes? The way I was always taught to read, was from left to right. And considering that most of us play on wide screen tv's (width is great than height), it makes perfect sense.

I was always baffled to why the music games had the notes going from the top down (or was it the other way around?)

Not only that, but there is NO way they could have the notes match the music since there if there is a huge crowd of zombies coming at you they all need unique notes to kill them and there would be no way for the dev to know which one you wanted to kill first.

Sorry, reviewer, but you didn't think this one through. I'm not saying this game is good or bad, i don't like rhythm games, but what you want would be impossible.

"The problems are compounded by the absolutely baffling decision to orient riffs and solos horizontally rather than vertically, as your brain has gotten used to processing for the better part of a decade."

It's a sad state of affairs when a decade of derivative music games has apparently made gamers forget that musicians have been reading notes horizontally for thousands of years.

That.
I mean seriously, haven't you ever seen a music sheet? 5 lines, notes left to right. The only reason the vertical alignment sort of works in Guitar Hero is because they actually tell you when to hit the notes by sliding them down - it wouldn't work in this game (unless I'm completely misunderstanding how it works).

What really confuses me is the fact that typing of the dead (Dreamcast) was nearly the exact same game, albeit with typing. From left to right.

The game is going to cost $40 and is being released on oct 19th. I was really exited about this when it was first announced but reading this review it seems dissapointing :/

Wow. I've read about this game a while back, but I thought that it was a downloadable title given the screens and description.

Budget title or not....Yeesh.

Typing of the Dead + Rob Zombie + Guitar Hero = Awesome. Sadly, everyone knows that an amazing concept can be wrecked far too easily. Sadface.

That's why ideas aren't worth much, it's execution that matters.

no sound effects while you're playing is strange, and very dissapointing. T hey could have done a LOT with that, letting you match the colors with the notes you feel like playing and mapping them in the options menu and remapping them any time. Then you'd be able to tinker around and make fun sounds from the pre-determined note patterns while killing zombies. So obvious, such a shame that didn't get in there. I'll give this game a shot eventually, but probably scoop it out of the bargain bin in a few months.

they should have included it as an add on to Guitar Hero or Rockband, not be an individual game

Hey guys,

I'm Bryan at Epicenter. Aside from not liking the musical selection and some knocks on the note tracking, it sounded like Justin actually had fun playing the game once he realized it wasn't what he had originally expected. While I do think we probably could have pushed the musical aspect of the gameplay a bit further, we never set out to create a core rhythm game. Rock of the Dead is much more of a twitch/action game that has elements of the rhythm genre while using a rather unique control scheme. When we first started working on the game, my biggest fear was that it would turn into an interactive music video, and we wanted to create a Game game, not a GH or RB knockoff.

@Courtney - The player gets to select which enemy they attack first by playing that particular enemy's first note or chord. This way you can decide to attack enemies that are the most dangerous to you and/or try to steal your co-op partner's kills (who doesn't like a little competition in your co-op?)

@roland13x Even though I'm a bit bummed by the actual star count, I really do appreciate Justin and Joystiq taking the time to review our game! Seriously appreciate it!

The star count isn't indicative of the overall quality of the game, it's their recommendation of whether or not it's worth it to buy it. I'd say that a 2.5 of 5 at Joystiq isn't a 50%, it's a you can take a chance with this game and you'll probably enjoy it. You have to read the review, not just look at the final score.

Having played the game at E3 and Comic Con, I can say its pretty fun. I do take issue with the review saying there is no sound effect tied to hitting the notes. There are.

But moving on, if you've played Typing of the Dead, its pretty much the same thing but with the guitar controller and like TotD it is a satisfying experience. Especially on higher difficulty levels. And the way the rhythm based sections come in and are played, really gives a great aural experience, in my opinion.

For $40, on 360 or PS3, you really can't go wrong. NPH, Felicia Day, and Rob Zombie, AND you get to kill some zombies just in time for Halloween. Its a no brainer for me.
