No, not always. Sometimes you push the truck and end up in Bill's Hills, which is filled with legendary Pokémon. I miss being so gullible ;_;

@PR0F3TA - Pokemon and Goldeneye share the top spot for me. I spent large swaths of my youth chasing ghosts in both games. In Pokemon it was constant rumors about how if you did things just right, you could get rare pokemon. In Goldeneye, it was about getting to some stupid hidden island on the first level.

I was a gullible little bastard.

The thing is, that island definitely does exist. You just need a Gameshark (or something like that) to get to it.

You don't even need a gameshark, you just had to trade for a pokemon with cut because getting the HM01 item makes the area close off.

A friend and me actually got all 150 pokemon and a machamp lv 100 with strength to move the truck.

It didn't work, but I miss stuff like that, without massive use of the internet here it was all legends passed from kid to kid.

BananaBoat, the island does exist. It's the one you can see from the right side of the dam. It originally had a part in the stage. You went out to it on a boat. It was dropped, and the island remained. You can only get out there with a GameShark. There is nothing out there except a non-working cannon tho.

We didn't know that gameshark existed in those days (for the gameboy anyway. I had a game genie for the SNES.)

It's via Mystery Gift, Wi-Fi, not bound to a specific location like Gamestop or Toys R US.

Basically you get a slight bonus to your stats based on which pokemon you gain experience from. This is why wild pokemon are reportedly weaker than trainer pokemon. It's the same boost as all those protein and carbos items give, they just stop working when you reach 100 points so you have to get the other 155 from battling. Different pokemon give different EVs and different amounts of them. I forget how they are converted into actual stats though.

I've only bothered EV training a shiny starlit I found.

EV training shinys only isn't what it used to be, they quit having bonus (maxed) Individual values after Gen 2, so from a battling standpoint they're pretty pointless.

I know, but I had a staraptor on my team anyway and the shiny one actually had the recommended nature so I figured I might as well train it well. I usually don't worry about EVs, but I like shiny pokemon =p

@PirateEmery actually, Celebi unlocks an event in HG/SS that sends you back in time and lets you battle Giovanni.
the Zoroark event is triggered by the shiny legendary beasts that were distributed for the movie.

Man, I remember going to Toys R Us, standing outside at 5AM in the cold in a line to get a card, and get in. You scratched the card and saw if you won him. If you did, you gave them your cart, and they put it in the machine, and unlocked him.

This was the original Red and Blue.

This kind of hurts a little, since I never got HeartGold or SoulSilver. I think i would prefer to get him on my original cart.

WARNING: SEVERELY OLD NEWS TO MOST PEOPLE INCOMING

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlDRlXyp9HM

It totally works. No Shenanigans. It manipulates the random number generator within the first game, which is reliant on the special attack (I believe) stat of the last pokemon you fought. The slowpoke you fight has the exact stast to force the random number generator to output that Mew is the next battle.

When I was feeling nostalgic a few years ago, I played through my copy and did this, having Mew in my party the whole way.

Yup, saw that a long time ago.

I would feel kind of funny getting it that way. Considering it's an exploit. But the chances of getting the original Mew at a Nintendo event is 0 now. Guess it's better than nothing.

Woah that way's way different from the way I did it. For my games all I did was skip the slowpoke dude, skip the gambler trainer just outside Lavender town. Get Fly from the grass town, do the start button as you walk to the trainer glitch on the gambler you skipped and fly to the water town. then fight the Slowpoke trainer, and then fly to the ghost town one last time. When you walk to the left towards the gambler's area the start menu comes up and you battle mew.

GOD how do I still remember that!?

@Drakkenfyre - It makes me chuckle a bit in hindsight that some events had a self-imposed shortage of Mew's, as if digital bits unlocking Mew were somehow rare or scarce.

Luckily, the event I went to for Mew as a kid didn't have any sort of limits on how many Mew's they could give out. The line was enormous, and I'm pretty sure that no one was turned away due to Mew stock issues.

I did have to win a tournament to get Surf Pikachu though, even though it was handed out freely in other cities.

Same here, I was about 8 or 9 at the time when the pokemon fad hit big. Used to go to the tournaments around the city and the leagues at Toys R Us. I remember dragging my whole family to Toys R Us just to get a better change at scoring that mew card. I managed to get 1 on my Pokemon Blue and then I used a memory duplicator cartridge to make infinite mews to sell/trade to people at the pokemon league. Hustling since age 9. Good times.

I was a bit older when I stood in line at Toys R Us. I was actually in high school when Pokemon came out.

I had some family members with me, too, but we didn't get a winning card. In fact, I don't think I saw anyone actually win.

No, you just won't be able to send it to a friend or re-download it. But why would you re-download something you already have anyway ? It's not like it can get corrupted, i think. You can have 5 wonder cards maximum if i remember correctly

@Energokinetic Only three. I'd read about sharing things, but I didn't know we could do it. So, I guess I'll delete my Jirachi card, since I already have that on Platinum. That'll leave me with Yellow Forest (dunno if my sister's game has it) and Enigma Stone (definitely know my sister doesn't have it).

Also, Joystiq, why the heck can't I be signed in when clicking the "blah has replied to your comment" link in my e-mails? It's inconvenient to have to go to the post and shuffle through the comments just to post a reply.

I always wondered why effing everybody's party is like this in these games. I understand each trainer type has its "theme" but give me some strategy! I mean even up to the elite four your facing trainers with only one to two types of pokemon, and the final boss is one of the only ones in the game with a balanced team!
