OutRun Online Arcade removed from PSN; XBLA version coming down Dec. 2011
27
Sega's OutRun Online Arcade has apparently been pulled from the PlayStation Network and will be taken off Xbox Live Arcade in December 2011. That's according to a statement the publisher gave Eurogamer after the site noticed OutRun had seemingly run off PSN.
Sega explained that the reason for the game's demise was "due to the expiry of the contract with Ferrari." This change apparently doesn't affect those who already own the game, merely those looking to purchase it. Future reference for aspiring attorneys: don't let a licensing deal like this happen to you.
We're currently following up with Sega for North American confirmation and some more details.

Well that just sucks, at least they will hide the download and keep it on the servers for re downloading.

@Chris DPSN AggieCEO XBLThe Aggi That's how XBLA works and I assume PSN is the same. The reason it was pulled is because a license expired. They are no longer allowed to sell the product with the Ferrari license in it. It doesn't change the sales that already happened when they had the license.
There are several XBLA games that this has happened to. When Midway went under their games on XBLA went away too. However, you can still redownload the games if you already own them.

that's why it is best to avoid at all costs to buy anything from the PSN store because of what can happen in the long run, you also have to worry about what will happen to the PSN store in 10 years from now, where will your purchases be then? it is something to think about.

Announcing this ahead of time (SEGA) would have given you a purchase. But now...

perhaps.. replace the Ferrari's with generic sports cars?

Yeah, makes no sense to have the online feature removed instead of the cars.

If you mean take all the personality out of the game, then yes.

But that is indeed true. But Outruns main draw has always been blazing trough the city at 200mph in an hot Ferrari. Sure they could always remove it and replace it with a bunch of look-a-likes but it just wouldn't be Outrun. It's the same thing Crazy Taxi, they're taking out The Offspring, Bad Religion & all the licensed places (Pizza Hut, KFC, etc). The same thing applies here they could replace them with look-a-likes and covers of the original, but it just won't be Crazy Taxi.

Do the old Mike Tyson's Punch Out move.
Pull the game down, put it back up with Mr. Dream.
All they need to do is remove the Ferarri logos. But of course, this would require work, and they already have their money from people who purchased it before, so they won't do it.

I liked the PS2 version. I would have bought the PS3 version if it came out here. Maybe they will re-release it without the Ferrari license?

Ahh damn, I never got around to purchasing this (just for the classic music), and now I never will :(
Sad day.

If you're getting contracts for a game you probly should avoid the ones that prevent you from selling the game in the future. Digital or hard copy.
Couldn't they have just paid Ferrarri up front and timed payments on sales up to a certain point?

This was a typical Sega FAIL from the get-go, they never released it in the states.

Perhaps they can just re-release it, with a different car in it?
Perhaps it could go on sale?
Dec 2011? That's a long time away. Did they mean

Kind of a bummer, but the Japanese PS2 version is still the best home version by far.

This is a game I'm still playing trying to unlock some achievements. I just love arcade racing and this game is a true challenge. Glad I got it and hope it doesn't magically stop playing. Even if the leaderboards and online play goes away, that's fine with me, I just like playing.
I'm not sure what the price is now, but if you enjoy unrealistic arcade racing, get this one before it disappears.
