If they can keep quality high, I don't care how many Sonic games they have. The problem isn't how many, but how good they are, at least in my opinion (and apparently the opinion of Sega too).

I'd rather them release multiple Sonic 1/2/3/4-like games a year if each one of them feels like a worthwhile investment of my time than release 1-2 average Sonic games. Even if they only release 1 great sonic game a year, if they can bump that up and make 2 great games a year, why not?

The idea is that if they release fewer games, then they can put more time into making each one great. When you try to do too many things at once, sure you can get them done, but the quality won't be as good as if you were focused on one thing only. I'm completely for quality over quantity, so I'm glad if that's what they're focusing on.

In what world would that happen? Certainly not in the world which I inhabit, known to some as "reality," in which Sega hasn't released a good Sonic platformer in the past 14 years.

@sonicspike41 Problem is, they've demonstrated time and time again that they can't keep the quality high. When I read "looking to improve Sonic strategy" the first thing I thought of was they weren't going to release any new Sonic games, ever.

On its own, burying past mistakes is hardly evidence of improving the Sonic strategy, IMO. An awesome new Sonic platformer done in the style of the Genesis originals, on the other hand...

You can do it, Sonic.

It means they will send a recall to all retailers, and not send out any more copies to stock when a newer game is out. This is not some magical mystical thing. After sales of the new game slump off, they will rerelease some of the popular older titles.

Disney does it to make their movies artificially rare, and to create a bigger demand when they come out. People know they will be pulled, so they have to rush to buy them. They occasionally rerelease them again for a limited time. You are screwed if a less popular movie comes out (like Atlantis) and you almost never see a rerelease. This also helps with their endless editions. So your Beaty & The Beast Master Remastered BluRay Super Duper High Resolution edition sells better.

I think most places/people were saying that while reviews do matter, reviews aren't necessarily going to be the end-all-be-all of marketing. That is, reviews and review scores can affect sales of a game, however word of mouth and ads on TV/radio/billboards/etc. are still more powerful.

Now, what a company decides to do with those review scores is totally different from what the review scores do for consumers.

In addition this is simply a shit move to curb the loss of sales of bad games. Instead of actually improving the new games, they remove the older games so when you buy a new Sonic game, only the new one is available. Don't make money by improving future games, make money by making them the only option.

For years Sonic fans have screamed at the developer what they want, and they are consistantly ignored. I mean seriously even one of them admitted he ignored fan's requests. When they make a crappy game they can't understand why it didn't sell better. People want a return to a classic Sonic, if not in 2D then one reminiscent of Sonic 1, 2, and 3 on the Sega Genesis. Instead they get some 3D item-collection shape-shifting platformer/racer with a thousand supporting characters. Only a few here and there do any good.

When you consider this news alongside the release of Sonic 4 and the pending arrival of Sonic Colors (which looks to be the best thing to happen to 3D Sonic in... ever), it's becoming obvious that Sega has finally decided to put some serious effort into making Sonic worth something again.

"A Sonic game can sell if it's a 60-percent Metacritic game, that's not an issue,"

No that's exactly the issue. Sonic games were still selling even though they were rated as low quality. Sega didn't care cause they were still making money.

Good luck. There's a sizable amount of reviewers who'll give you poor ratings regardless of the game's quality.

They're stupid as HELL for taking Metacritic into consideration here.

A publisher would much rather have a Just Dance than an Okami.

Figure out what actually made the old Sonic games popular, and replicate it. Sonic 4 is a step in the right direction, but Sega screwed up by not making it a retail title and releasing it all at once, so it'll be crippled in its ability to really make an impact.

sonic is almost impossible to reinvent. 3d just doesnt work because the speed of sonic would just be a waste to model lush environments etc so levels would be over too quickly.
2D sonic is perphaps the only way sonic will work. i wasnt won over by sonic 4's 2.5D look the prerendered images lost what i felt was amazing from the original genesis games. at the end of the day sonic 4 looked like a 3d render floating around on a 2d level...

its not going to achieve mario status... already 10 years too late for that. think they need to just keep trying new ideas... but not new characters!

Really? I really liked SA and SA2 for the Dreamcast. That was the way I wanted to play sonic from then on. Then the gamecube came out. Okay... Basically same game comes out... Then one of my least favorite game "Sonic Heroes" comes out. Then Shadow the hedgehog, which sucked even more, then it just went downhill from there...

This is Sega we're talking about. What matters to them is never easy for mortals to comprehend.

Plus, they haven't been anything but apologetic about Sonic since the post-Adventure 2 era. Every new game is going to "recapture" what people loved about Sonic. Every game is going to "fix" all of the past mistakes. They're always going to get back to that "thrilling speed" that made Sonic what he is.

I love Sega from the Dreamcast era, but I've never really enjoyed a Sonic game (except Sega Superstars Tennis). I suck at getting Sonic to run straight in 3D. In 2D, I felt it was just memorizing when to press jump, as everything went by really fast. I definitely enjoy Mario over Sonic for basic platforming, although my all-time favorite might be Splosion Man.
