Great review Justin!

I was one of the people who was very excited about the potential of the original Scribblenauts but disappointed in the execution.

Glad to hear I can pick this one up with no worries.

Awesome. Personally, I didn't have a big problem with the original. Yes, it didn't control exactly as I wanted to all the time, but 90% of the time, it did what I wanted without an issue. The idea of taking that game and making it better, though, is ideal. Thanks for the review and bring it on.

I guess that is what sequels are for sometimes, getting it right the 2nd time.

I still have the hat from pre-ordering the first game! Can't get the dog to wear it...

@Drew327

Right. I hate when reviewers right "(game name 2) is the game that (game name) should have been."

It kinda goes without saying when the game improves upon the predecessor and in a way, you wouldn't know what to fault the first game for until it was improved on until the sequel anyway. But... I digress...

@JB

But the first Scribblenauts was fundamentally broken. It was a great concept ruined by horrible controls. I think that saying only applies in these situations. And Scribblenauts definitely fits.

@Vidikron

I wasn't making the point about this particular game itself. I am simply saying that "...is the game ___ should have been" is one of those statements that I've read in way too many reviews to the point where it's just cliche. I think reviewers need to find a better way to get that point across other than typing that exact phrase.

Great to hear. The first one was both brilliant and infuriating, and the change in controls alone would be enough to remove most of the frustration and bring it out of its shell. I'll definitely give this a go.

No matter how good this is, I'd have a hard time giving money to anyone responsible for something as bad as the first game.

Just think of it as giving monies to someone responsible for something as awesome as Lock's Quest then.

@creid8 Scribblenauts sure wasn't perfect, but it was far from a "bad" game.

Justin,

Listen, just review the game and leave your adjectives out of it. God!

"Want to control Maxwell with the d-pad rather than the stylus? Of course you do, you're not an insane person. It wasn't a question anyway, it was a set-up for me to tell you that you can totally do that now."

Just an example of why Justin is the most trustworthy video game critic around.

@BoxcarWalrus This is surprisingly hard to say, but I think I'll stick to the stylus controls. I seriously didn't have any problems with them.

@(Unverified) That was brave of you to admit! I couldn't stand accidentally tapping on objects when I wanted Maxwell to move, or vice versa.

Mostly, I was just pointing out one of my favorite lines from the review.

Now if they can integrate this whole concept into a more traditional game for Super Scribblenauts 2 (or is that Hyper Turbo Remix?) I'll be truly impressed

@MidgardDragon There are two games in this franchise. They are one year apart. So far, this is an annual franchise. You're making a fair point, that we traditionally would think of applying the term "annual" after a series of events have happened annually. If I had wanted to stick by that convention, I could have said "an iteration that followed a year after the first one," but that's pretty clumsy.

It's not surprising it took a second game to perfect everything, most innovative games just die out after one game due to a couple flaws. They don't have the advantage of looking back and seeing what previous games did.

Anyway, I'm going to get super scribblenauts as soon as I get the money =p

So what you're saying is that those of us who held off on the original game, but were always intrigued by the idea are the perfect people to play this game.

Sounds good to me.

I am thrilled to read this review, I did not purchase the first game because poor controls are my biggest pet peeve in games.

I can tell you how many PS2 platformers I skipped because of bad controls/camera angles.

Justin,

Would you say this is a game that warrants buying a DS, for those that don't have a DS?

Or maybe even a 3DS?

Got my copy via UPS earlier today... I have to say the new game is great. And by that, I mean it's everything the first game was but with all the annoying issues removed!

The game has some interesting features besides the adjectives. For example, did you know you can nest adjectives onto game objects in the form of "-rays"? Try something like a "shrink ray", and the game will recursively apply that description to whatever object gets hit by it. So you could "shrink" a building using a "shrink ray", dropping the building to half it's size... but hit it again, it shrinks to 1/4th, 1/8th and 1/16th respectively until it's practically too small to be displayed!

I'm sure there are other properties that could be embedded into a "-ray" and nested recursively...

Anyone notice any other oddities like this?

(btw... I know the last game had a "shrink" ray, but the game imposed severe limitations on its use, like only one-to-two times per object, rather than indefinitely as this version seems to allow...)

Bets on the next Scribblenauts being "Scribblenauts 3-D" on the 3DS, where all objects are simple 3D models that can be distorted with wordplay and crafty combining? ;-)
