@Demachine I sooo agree, I am one of them! currently, steam has about 2.5 mil ppl online, when dota 2 launches, it's gonna get to like 9mil in maybe 1 month, and I'm not exaggerating, that's how many ppl playing this game.
and for the developing team, don't worry too much. IceFrog himself -the modder of DotA- have worked alone on developing the content of it for 2 years without payment. Although I believe Valve will really put an effort on this game, it actually doesn't need that much more work on.
let's all enjoy this!

Same. Denying is added micro to make the game more complex, but it's not FUN.

@zsavior I disagree. Maybe denying isn't fun at lower skill levels, but at higher levels and competitive play, it's a great way for good players to have a noticeable impact early, and a good way to keep farming heroes under control. While I haven't played LoL, I have played a ton of DotA and HoN, and I feel it adds a lot to the gameplay.

I'm confused. This was a Warcraft 3 mod, correct? What does Valve have to do with this at all? Why are they making a sequel?

Valve hired some of the original guys.

It started out as a mod. As long as they change enuf to avoid copyright issues, they can release their own game. Two retail versions of DOTA already exist.

They bought the guy who co-created the map for WC3, IIRC. So, of course a full blown game is going to come eventually. Besides League of Legends anyway.

Ok, that makes sense I guess. But I still don't undertand why Valve hired them and not Blizzard. They don't make RTS games at Valve! Well, I guess they do now... but still!

@Fuzunga Wait, are we hearing you right!? You don't understand why Valve *DIDN'T HIRE* Blizzard!?

They're not all just buddies for hire y'know... Blizzard has this small little thing called Cataclysm coming out soon. Oh and another couple of small titles Diablo III and StarCraft 2 expansions, no biggie tho... they got time for Valve.

Because dota is not an RTS... and blizzard would have taken 20 years to release the game.

@mundox Forgive me for my lack of knowledge concerning PC gaming. I just assumed because it was a mod of Warcraft 3, that it was an RTS. Still, as far as I'm concerned, everything Valve makes concerns shooting some kind of a gun. Who knows, maybe they were just big fans.

Anyway, you're totally right about the release issue, although Valve is doing an awesome job getting HL2 Episode 3 out in a timely manner.

While I'm still a little irked by the fact that they are using the Dota name, I do appreciate that they added a "2" at the end. Something other companies would never have done.

haha, I've actually heard a lot of good things about HoN, but I don't think I'd ever end up actually buying it...League of Legends will probably still keep a lot of people should this cost money (which I expect it to) but hopefully will be worth it?

@luce1sw

HoN is a fantastic game which retains the competitave nature of DotA in a far better way than LoL. The truth is all us DotA players ever wanted was the exact same game with a more up to date engine. HoN only falls short of this because legally they can not port anymore updates/heros from DotA so they have to make their own bastardised versions.

If they make the exact same game it'll win and sell hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide.

To those who play LoL: nothing personal but it is the most childish piece of crap that has nothing on DotA/HoN. I wan't my 170 meg download back and the 10 hours of attempting to give it a fair go before I realized it was utter garbage.

Imo DotA is the best pvp game ever made mixing knowledge, skill and balance better than 99% anything else you'll ever spend your time gaming. When you're owning in a closely ranked match I can safely say that no other game even comes close to the satisfaction you'll recieve. This is hightened by the amount of time it took you to actually learn the game itself for there was nothing else like it ever made. It's not an RTS, MMO or FPS.

Maybe you'll luck out with DotA 2 and the whole 'community fixing' issue that Valve wants to impliment will actually work although I highly doubt it. The DotA/HoN community has always been one of the worst. LoL players say that their communtiy is much better; evidence to the fact that the game blows, no denys PFFFT. Kids who don't want deny's in DotA can't micro enough to last hit ie time for bed zzz

I guess I'll grab it if the game's under $15. Unless Valve starts churning out regular updates, of course.

I honestly don't see the point in releasing the game with all of the original characters, it leaves such a small amount of room for growth. They said there will only be one map so no growth there and there will already be power creep in play with 100+ characters so adding any more will just make it worse.

I think it would've made more sense to take say the 20-30 best/most fun/most played and use them as a building blocks. I understand they want some familiarity to old players but I just don't see the sense in releasing an exact clone but with only graphical and mechanical improvements. Time will tell how it works out I guess.

Actually, "Denying" is still alive and well in League of Legends.

The character Gangplank can use his pistol to sacrifice minions, buffering himself and his teammates.

I never played DotA (or LoL) so I'm confused about something - what's up with having only one map? Is it suppose to be some uber-map that allows for tons of different strategies? Or is it just a case of having the 100 heroes create the variety in strategies, and map just being a sort of chessboard like thing?

Posted: Oct 14th 2010 11:50AM checho0 said

@2late2die

Exactly, it's a chessboard with 100 peices of which are only played 10 at a time in countless different combinations. You don't need any more than the one map. HoN has other maps but nobody plays them. The other point is that the DotA map (which is the same as the HoN map) has been made to a very fair and even standard for both teams. There are slight differences which I won't go into as not to confuse but they're not exactly game changing. A game of DotA/HoN can be won/lost in the hero lineup that was picked/randomed before the match time even starts. LoL doesn't factor in for it is garbage. New heroes was not what DotA needed it just needed to be free of the WCIII engine. These hereos have been tested and balanced out over many years to make the game mainly factor on the skill of the players themselves. Yes this game can be played for years and years and years.....ect

@Chazzr be careful with buying this game. I'm a hardcore fan of it but I'm aware there are ppl who do not have the same taste. If ur just an FPS fan, not a RTS fan (although the game is not exactly of RTS genre, u may call it sub-genre of RTS, it will be too long explaining exactly), then u may want to somehow try the game first before buying it.
Cheers!
