I kind of did. I had high hopes for this game. The GBA and DS 2D Sonic games haven't been that bad so I though that this will be somewhat decent.

I wouldn't say it's too bad, but it's about $5 too much in my opinion.

Not with Episode 1 I didnt. But I believe that will (hopefully) change with Ep 2.

While Ep1 isnt the Sonic game we've been waiting for, no one can deny that its a step in the right direction. The same goes for Sonic Colors.

Ep1 was more of an experiment. Sega said in an interview that they havent even touched Ep2. They are waiting for all reviews and reception on Ep1 so they can make any changes and tweeks they find necessary based on those reviews, even if it means revamping the whole game from scratch.

And I consider this a great strategy from Sega. They're finally listening to us.

@Garst totally agree. If they had put this for $10 I wouldnt be so hesitant but it seems they are confident enough with it to put it at that price. Too bad I ll just have to wait until its part of a deal of the week or something (if it ever does)

Also Im still hoping that Sonic Colors will do Sonics name justice for once.

Joystiq, I have to say, this is the first time in the ~4.5 years that I have been a regular visitor of your site that I have EVER so wholeheartedly disagreed with you. I was preparing myself this whole time for this game to suck, but to be totally honest, I was blown away by how much I enjoyed myself when I played it the other day.

I feel very disappointed video game wise lately. Best buddy bought Medal of Honor at almost full price ($55)....single player took just over 5 hours, multiplayer was pretty weak. Sonic reviews are horrible, once again dashing (no pun intended) my glass half full optimism. Gran Turismo 5 (the game I was most looking forward to this year) delayed...again. It would be funny if Duke Nukem Forever came out before GT5. Not haha funny, more like Dane Cook funny, as in not funny at all. Just sad. So sad.

The problem here is that it's sitting on the fence so to speak. It's trying to be old school but incorperating elements of modern Sonic.

It really sounds as if they missed the point, going fast was only cool when you could only do it when the level permitted you to build up the momentum. I agree with the statement in this clever review 100% saying Sonic seems robotic, and in my opinion soul-less.

It's a shame.

Sega should just contract the game out to BioWare...they did a great job the first time, why not give it a second shot?

Because that wouldn't be a "Classic" Sonic game.
Just give me Sonic Adventure 2:Battle or Sonic Adventure 3 and i'll be happy.

At least this wasn't as bad as the Sonic Adventure port, as in literally a straight port from DreamCast to 360..... I'm pretty sure they could have y'know made it so everything didn't pop up 3 inches from you :/

Dammit, this sounds right up my alley. I'm still gonna have to give the demo a try. I'm hoping this does well enough to at least convince them to give it another shot with Episode 2.

Problems of "mechanics are there, but it's uninspiring" are remedied easier than "the camera sucks I can't jump on anything someone shoot that sidekick with a rifle plz"

yea i was thinking this was a for sure buy but now i think i'll try the demo first. other sites loved it but i tend to trust Joystiq a little more than some random review i got from a Google search. well Joystiq may have saved me $15 then. i may pull out the old ones instead though.

It really depends on how you look at it. If you're a sonic fan that's been highly anticipating this, then yes you will look down on it. However, if you're just now getting into Sonic, this is a great addition to the series.

How can one view something as a "great addition" to a series if they are only now getting into said series?

Not trolling. It's a legit question.

Most new sonic fans (like me) like the substance of it all. Sorry if it isn't clear, but if it's sonic, so far I like it (Yes, I know I am going to hit many duds in the way. I'm skipping all of the next-gen releases [except for this one])

All this talk of being disappointed in recent Sonic outings makes me wonder if I was the only person who thought the original Mega Drive (Genesis) games weren't up to much snuff in the first place.

I'm with you on that one, I always remember sonic sliding around like "a bar of soap wrapped in a banana peel" and IMO the backgrounds always seemed dull and static. I think perhaps he's looking back on sonic with rose colored glasses.

@antv Nostalgia is the best way to write a scathing review of a current-gen game based on an older one. I'd like to see a review of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 voiced by a ten-year-old, just to get an alternate view onthe game's quality.

Actually I remember playing a pre-release copy of Sonic 2. And it most certainly was "all that and a bag of chips" at the time. I can't remember anyone in my community or in the press deriding it. It made the Mario games seem stodgy. No joke. 6 million copies of Sonic 2 sold is the *entire* reason we are having this conversation now. It was top of the heap for its day, and for 16 years we have hoped they can do it again. They can't.

Kind of hard to believe that your comment got voted so high when everybody in here seems to be saying how good those old games are. I've never been a Sonic Super Fan, but the first 3 are really good. After playing the Demo and then loading up the first one, you see a pretty big quality difference in gameplay. Never liked "& Knuckles" and I think, even though it was a Sega CD game, that Sonic CD is highly overrated and is probably only better than "& Knuckles". Maybe you are thinking of the Master system Sonic?

I just gave the trial a whirl and as much as I wanted to like it I just couldn't shake that feeling of being completely underwhelmed.

I breezed through the 1st (and only stage offered in the trial) in under 2 minutes on auto-pilot. I did not once lose any of the rings I had accumulated and never had any sense of fear when rushing through the level.

I'm sad sega, i'm very sad. :(

@Xcrucio dude.. its the first stage. go back and play any old sonic.. not only do you breeze through most stages in a short period of time anyways (i mean, you have a 10 minute time limit)... the first stage is always the shortest and easiest.. thats generally the case in any video game though.

But traditions shouldn't hold back progress. Just because older games had simple opening levels (though I would argue that both Sonic 3 and Sonic & Kunckles had way stronger openings than this) doesn't mean this has to follow suit. "Because the other ones did it" is a weak argument against it. As it stands, this opening act feels uninspired and too simplistic for the $15 asking price when I could go drop $5 on the Genesis ports for what amounts to the same game (arguably better depending on your view point and packed with more levels).

@Xcrucio lol well stop playing video games altogether then.. its not just sonic.. its a no brainer for a video game to start off as simple and easy as possible.. you know, so new comers can try and figure out how to play without going through an all out tutorial (and some intro levels are just tutorials in the first place).

it just would have been better to show off a later stage in the demo.. maybe the 2nd act of the 2nd zone or something...

I got it for pure nostalgia. only played 2 zones. and so far i hate the physics. its like they didnt bother comparing what made the old sonic physics great and enjoyable. homing attack is eh/ could have done without.

only reason this game was worth the 15$ was the classic intro SEEEEEEEGA
