Disney cancels Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned; Propaganda suffers layoffs

A Disney Interactive representative has confirmed to Joystiq that Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned has been sunk down to Davy Jones' locker and will not come to port in 2011 ... or ever. The confirmation comes following rumors reported by Kotaku that the game had been canceled and layoffs had occurred at developer Propaganda Games.

In a statement (in full after the break), Disney Interactive explains that a "restructuring" has occurred at Propaganda Games, "affecting one of the studio's two development teams." Propaganda is still working on this December's Tron: Evolution and its post-release DLC.

Disney Interactive statement:

Disney Interactive Studios confirms the cancellation of the Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned video game which was scheduled to be released in 2011. As a result of this decision, Disney Interactive Studios completed a restructuring of Propaganda Games, its Vancouver, BC internal studio, affecting one of the studio's two development teams.

The studio is still in active production of Tron: Evolution, the video game, which will be released on December 7, 2010 with additional DLC (downloadable content) support following the game's release.

I bet they try to bring it back when the POTC movie gets further along

@Cleric Agreed, I had actual hopes for this game to be, if not a fantastic game, at least not awful. Sad panda... but oh well. Maybe if the next Pirates movie does well, it'll be resurrected.

I was also looking forward to it. We really need a good pirate game, since that genre is woefully lacking. A Pirates RPG sounded fun.

This game looked more interesting than Tron. Too bad it was canceled. But usually if a company cancels something it's because it was mediocre at best.

@ArtificialEnemy Yes to this. They're backing the title that's called "_____ The Videogame"? Disney, you sank the wrong battleship.

@ArtificialEnemy That's not true, sometimes games get cancelled when they've gone over budget, a lead designer leaves the studio, they can't sell copies to retail, don't have the funds to finish it, or other reasons.

The screens look amazing and "Pirate RPG" screams awesome that only "Zombie RPG" could best...

@ArtificialEnemy Just what I was gonna say. The game looked way better than TRON, particularly since it wasn't tied to any particular movie events.

Never even heard of this game or maybe I did and just didn't care about it.

How many Pirate games are there? On that note there are a lot of ninja type games out there :D

Oh that's real nice, cancel turok 2 and then cancel the game that actually had potential.
But leave the lame tron game.

Simple reasoning that Tron is left.
Is Tron an old movie? Check.
Is it big? Check.
Have people been dying for a sequel? Check (self-sacrifices count).

Opens the game up to much more predictably larger sales, while Pirates of the Caribbean didn't have any Jack or Sparrows or Turners, so nothing major to really push for it.

I never really liked the movies, but something about the trailer to this game really made me think it'd be quite good.

Though I do suppose that's exactly what the trailer was meant to do, and I know (knew) nothing else about it.

I had a chance to see this game first hand at E3, and it was one of the games I was most excited about in the entire show. This is a complete tragedy.

This game honestly didn't look that bad, I was curious to give the demo a whirl. Probably would have been better than the rest of the Pirates of the Caribbean crap they have released, including the last 2 movies.

Sad... I was looking forward to trying this game out...

Man, there is an absolute shortage of good pirate games. It's such an obvious backdrop for gaming. Yarggghh.

However, if I had to choose between the two games, I think they made the right choice.

This sounded like a decent game, too, or at least had some ideas that would be great if they all worked out.

man this is crazy business, all that dev time, and it was looking good. I had high hopes for an actual good pirate game, even though this might not have been it.

I has a sad. I was actually watching this one. It looked kind of awesome.

You cancel Turok 2 AND this, Disney? What the hell is their goddamn problem?!

They need to go back and higher the guys who they payed of to title change the original pirates of the caribbean on the xbox.

That game was one of the greatest I have ever played and if a 'sequal' to it was to appear I would be a first day buy.

If I've learned anything over the years, it's that previews can be very deceptive. Just because a game LOOKS good doesn't mean it'll come out that way. For the company to cancel the project outright must have meant the game was irredeemable.

My thoughts go out to the those laid off. May they land on their feet sooner than later.

This is very true.

Another thing to note is that the company has new presidents, with different ideas on where to take the company. So yeah, there's that, too.

I was excited for that game. It seemed like a good portion of it was done.
