That was a great feature that should have a toggle switch! To people who work, school etc that was a great feature to get through the game and help without pouring that much time that I don't have into the game. So far on my list that's two important features removed from Fable II.

Why are games being made to so closely mirror real life? Don't we play games to escape real life for awhile? So, if you marry a player in co-op, your gold is combined? So, if I'm playing the game by myself, I have to worry about how much money I spend or vice versa? This just seems like a needless aspect for me. I don't really want to think about that stuff. I already have to do that in real life and it's not fun.

And...managing properties? Even if you have some butler to assist you, how is that any fun at all?

@Duffin I think it makes every decision more costly. And its an RPG, so they are making you role play in this world. The ultimate way to do it.

@Duffin

I think this is an interesting conversation, because I think most people fall in the vein of "I play games to escape reality", but I think there's still value in the pursuit of trying to make games more life like.

The reason being simply this- the more realistic systems that are put into place, the better the player can relate or know what to expect from the game.

The goal isn't to make a life simulator... but if you can make physics, graphics, and AI real to life, you can use these realistic systems and place them in NOT true to life circumstances, for instance, living as an ant in an ant colony, or becoming a space marine or living in an alternate ancient land. These games would benefit from realistic systems, even if the game locales and premises aren't true to life.

Having the familiar analogs will allow players to do more things, and have those things affect the game in a way they expect.

We're not seeking true to life games to simulate life... we're looking for them so we can make games true to life and then turn them on their head. That day, I think, will be a great day for gaming.

I've always had a pet peeve about people saying "I play games to escape real life." I've never played video games in this way. I play games because it's fun no other reason.

There's a lot of nerds out there, me included, who actually love this level of management and decision making. I'm looking forward to this game.

@Tiptup300

I often play games to "escape life," in the sense that I'd rather explore some make believe environment than go wander around my consumerist hellhole of a town, but that doesn't mean I don't want to see reflections of reality.

The trouble with reality is the very real consequences tied up in all of your actions. A dishwashing video game is bound to be more entertaining than actually washing dishes just by removing the risk of pruned fingers and physical exertion.

The consequences are always fake enough in video games for any action to be escapism, unless you're nuts.

@Duffin It's a balance, certainly. "Realistic mechanics" in games that aren't sims are more relatable, easier to understand without a tutorial, and seem less likely to make the player feel confused or cheated when things don't work in their favor.

I view a realistic economy in games the same way I view realistic physics. It doesn't have to be there to make the game fun, but it makes the game believable. The way Alpha Protocol handles stealth is neither realistic or believable, but as a game mechanic, I can't think of a better way to handle a stealth skill check in real time.

@Duffin You're complaining that a game where you fight trolls and cast magical spells is too realistic? You need to leave your house more often.

I really enjoyed Fable 2, but never complete all the quests. I owned/rented all the houses, so I would imagine if I borrowed the game from my buddy and played it I would be very, very rich indeed. It has been well over a year.

It's got like a 3 day cap or something like that, so it'll not be as awesome as you might imagine.

@Erluti I'm sure it's a little larger than a 3 day cap, because you can turn off Xbox Live and forward the console date to 30 years from now and it'll accrue a ton of gold when you turn it back on. If not then you just get a lot of money in 3 days, haha.

I like that the money matters more. I was filthy rich in the 2nd game and made it less interesting when I never had to see how much money I had before making a decision. I can't wait for this game!

Agreed. It was nice, having millions at first, but after awhile of never even having to consider purchases in the slightest, the game just started feeling like you were going though completing everything with a cheat code enabled.

Finally I can be my hero and have my money in co-op. I hope they got rid of the ball and chain co-op as well. If you marry or become partners with another player I hope there are achievements associated with them. I think it could be a good idea to marry or become partners with someone. Only if you do that with your friends. I am sure there are ways to screw over the other player if its not your friend. If so then that could be interesting. As long as all my property and money dont disappear. I know they are saying you can gain money even quicker if you are married or in a partnership; but is it possible just to lose it that quick depending upon what the other player does with the money? I think there needs to be more information on how much control the other player has of the money. It sounds like a good idea but it still can be flawed.

I honestly don't see why you were downvoted.

Its the bloody truth. In 1-2 years Fable 4 will be announced, and we'll have several articles from Molyneux about why Fable 3 was horrible and a majority of the players never used this or that cause they "didn't understand it (because lack of interest implies idiocy to him)", and that Fable 4 will be the epitome of his career.

You know, this article was posted a week and a half before the release of Fable III. There's no way Lionhead's scrapping a selling point they've championed through the entire process just over a week before the release. And Peter Monlyneux is not Lionhead. Lionhead is company, not one man.

oh yeah, they scrapped that just a few weeks before release, then the day before release claimed that they got it perfect and will be implemented for release. We saw how well that worked out.

THE ECONOMY MATTERS! but to who? What exactly does giving money to people do? If you give a poor person tons of money, will they go and buy a rich house? Perhaps the rich house you just bought to sell...

Innovation is something Lionhead should stop saying.

But let's be serious here someone is going to find a way to get easy money in this game, either from a glitch or something you can do during the game.

It is doubtful that I will ever amass the amount of gold coins necessary to swim about in a rather large money bin (not to mention the danger of grievous harm when diving from such a height into a massive pile of gold), therefore I too hope that this allows me to virtually live out my fantasy of Scrooge McDucking.

In Fable 2 all you had to do was disconnect your Internet, then change the date on your console to about ten years. Then once you played the game you were a rich man.

Is this something you actually tried, or just a hypothesis you came up with now?

I swear Fable 2 had a cap on how long they gave you money offline. I hadn't played it for months and when I came back to it I only had a couple of days worth of income

Eh. Unlimited money sort of takes away from the challenge after awhile, and it was really easy to sploit Fable 2's rental system. It'll be nice if they actually do fix that this time around.

The whole point of Fable is making choices, there are better rpgs, there are better action rpgs but fable is about choices and thats why its great. If this is extended to money then all the better. Also I like the grind of getting rich and building an empire and for anyone is concerned about not having unlimited money I think we all know that within a week of this being out there will be a glitch or a way of farming it.

Agreed. Fable has always enticed me because I love making decisions and seeing how it affects the world around me. Seeing as to how these new features are seemingly putting that on a larger scale only interests me more.

So what I can't rent out houses and make a buttload of money NOT playing the game, but that adds a new depth of challenge, because.. ya know, you actually have to PLAY the game. Isn't that what we pay $60 for? ^_^

This economy stuff sounds decent, although I highly suspect that the hand holding touch mechanic is going to be pretty crap and not an important part (or perhaps any part) of Fable 4. The whole followers thing also sounds pretty naff from what's been described so far, as well.
