I've not been playing Reach as much as I thought I would be. The abysmal time:reward ratio may have something to do with it.

The sensation of getting a lot of credits in a match only to see my rank bar move nary a centimetre is something I don't want to have, so I've played other games a lot more. Not to mention I look at some daily challenges and their rewards and think "screw that, I'm not playing at all now".
Explains why I'm still Warrant Officer even though I feel I've played more than that rank lets on. THE CREDITS! THEY DO NOTHING!

Reach gave me plenty of bang for my buck, now it needs to start giving me more buck for my bang.

I totally agree. I think they should start the Double XP weekends already. Or at least give more credits for the tasks you do. A regular kill is only like 4 credits. I would like at least 50 credits per kill.

You really should play Score Attach Gruntpocalypse. I used it to get over the mountain that is Warrant Officer. After that rank it gets easier I promise.

BTW the best maps are Courtyard and Corvette (never go to their level, they will rape you) and keep track of your Commendations, each time you hit a milestone you get a boatoad of credits.

@daytripper I've been doing Sniper Attack actually, gives me infinite ammo for everything and I find it easier than Gruntpocalypse. Especially if I can get to the Plasma Launcher and fire off single rounds at the big guys.

That one is great, fuel rod is the best against Skirmishers. But come Tuesday, Bungie is changing it so you can't pick up any weapon in Sniper Attack, which means what you spawn with is what you have to use. Thank God the pistol is actually useable again.

if you decide not to play one day because the challenges are too difficult, you're playing the game for... very superficial reasons.

i don't really get why people care so much about their rank. and fyi, if you're at Warrant Officer grade 3, you're actually ahead of most players:

what's all this talk about time:reward ratio in an FPS?

you shoot people, and they die.

the more time you spend shooting, the more die.

seems like enough of a reward to me.

@Exu Other than warrant officer it seems like the leveling in Halo is pretty fast. It's just not as fast as COD, but that's kinda the point. Halo takes a little more involvement, same as it takes a few more bullets to kill an enemy.

After the 110 hour grind that it takes to complete Forza 3 to 100%, I don't think any other game could ever seem slow again.

Well your other problem is that the Warrant Officer ranks were deliberately designed to be long. Once you get past them you'll shoot through the Captain ranks.

And if playing for "exp points" and "rank" in a FPS, then your priorities are whack.

I never said that I play just for the xp. I just would like to earn more xp so I can get more armor. While it may not be of concern to you, there are people who get tired of how their spartan looks like. You're probably the type of person who likes to play just to play & I am too but that gets boring after a while & I would like to work towards something to keep me wanting to play until I get it. That's the reason why every game that has online has a ranking system. Valve doesn't use a ranking system because they have they're own way of keeping the player intrigued with updates like they do with TF2 & the mutations with L4D2. While Bungie does have a ranking system, their matchmaking gametypes don't always revolve around shooting as there are gametypes called rally that have spartans race to get the checkpoints. All I'm saying is, stop trying to convince people that the way you play is the best way, we're not you & never will be so we will never like all the same things. That's what gets me the most frustrated. Unless you're getting paid to convert people to how you play, there's no point in doing it.

@Exu Warrant Officer grade 3 (to captain) was the worst.. 66k to level up, currently Captain grade 3, with needs 46k, just 13k to go & then it's the road to Lt, once I get that, I won't care anymore (hopefully by Fable3)... probably play Halo 3 a ton to try & get Lt there. Since it needs to be one playlist to get the achievement

@BrianH Oh yeah it never should be about XP and rank, fun comes first and foremost (hell that's why Modern Warfare 2 bored me so quickly).

What I'm saying is that now there's more incentive to play for rank and credits, that's actually had the reverse effect on me. I've not wanted to play Reach so much because of the ranking system.

The whole rank and credit system in Reach is a mess, and Bungie's adamance to make it harder to get them just puts me off even more.

@Exu Maybe it has something to do with the fact that you aren't expected to prestige 10 times? I mean really aside from armor unlocks and a handful of achievements there is no real reason to push your rank up. Its not like the rest of the recent shooter world where parts of the online game are withheld until you unlock some arbitrary rank. At least in Reach the experience is no different whether you are a rank of a private or general. I for one prefer that over having to spend hours on end just to unlock the class items that result in me not getting my ass handed to me by higher ranked players.

If they want it done faster, they need to start adding more "Kill X number of enemies in campaign" challenges, because we're getting way too many Matchmaking-only challenges, which is hell for people like me who don't play Matchmaking.

There are 4 daily challenges, split them up. 2 Campaign, 2 matchmaking. Not some days 1 campaign and 3 matchmaking, or all matchmaking on other days.

People play Score Attack (see above post) the challenges that require you to play online Firefight include Score Attack. Score Attack lets you play by yourself (no AFK's or 12 year olds like regular four person online Firefight).

One of Fridays challenges was worth 4,000 credits. It required you to get 400 kills in any game mode. Gruntpocalypse in Score Attack is the easiest 400 kills you will ever get.

A lot of the Firefight challenges can be completed on the Score Attack playlist, which is single player only. I don't know if you can play solo Firefight without a hard drive, but if so that's a good option.

I consider myself a damn good player, but the "Complete X on Legendary without dying" were absolutely impossible for me to fully complete.

There's a way around it though, I getting the first challenge by playing coop with my friends and hanging back... then I got a little sneakier and for today's challenge (Complete Nightfall Leg without dying) I just signed in another controller, completed it on my guest account while letting my main account sit back at the start of the level.

Works like a charm =)

Playing on Legendary just means that vehicles are death traps and long range is your best friend. :D

actually i think Captain grade 1 is only 23k credits. the jump to Major is then 46k credits, though still less than the jump to Captain. you can see what you need for all the levels here:

It doesn't help when they release impossible challenges, such as today's Assist challenge (impossible because it is glitched). Assist challenges suck anyway, so I'm happy to have an excuse to pass it by.

At the rate things are going, it looks like they're going to walk everyone through "A Monument to All Your Sins" though with these Legendary challenges.

It's not that difficult once you get the hang of it. I'm not the greatest Halo player in the universe, far from it, but I can pull off a headshot. As long as you can do this, Legendary can be much, much less tedious.

@adeese The only truely hard levels on Legendary I would say are the last three. Those just were not much fun. Especially the last one. For most of the rest, just make sure you always have a headshot weapon (DMR or pistol) for the riff raff, and either a plasma pistol (to take out elites w/ a noob combo) or some bigger weapon. Pick off the grunts and jackals first, then concentrate on the elites and/or brutes. Rinse, repeat, done.

For most of the early levels, you can kind of hang back and let the AI help you out as well. Just take things slow and careful, and you'll get through it.

I tried the ONI mission a couple of times yesterday and Nightfall a couple of times today and never managed it.

For me, it's far too easy to get hit by a stray plasma grenade or some other "insta-kill" type thing that comes out of nowhere.

Gonna give it another go tonight though.
