@ILT2 Gah, I know! Getting a blu ray player that comes with a rechargeable controller, built in wifi, bluetooth, and free online gaming sounds awful for $300. Doesn't Sony know how terrible it is to have to charge a controller, or to buy a charging stand that can charge 4 controllers at once? They should give us controllers that only take Double A's and that don't come with charging cords, and then expect us to buy a new one to have chargeable controllers. If they do that and make us pay for online, then we'll talk.

Oh, and I heard they eat babies too.

Im confused by your comment.

PS3: $300
360: $300
PC : $500++ for an okay gaming one..

@Faenix for some reason, I always thought the normal 360's were $200....but I looked on Walmart and only the 4GB one is. Combine the cost of Live, even reduced, and that's at least $330 just for total functionality of games, assuming you get the non-4GB console.

I posted before in a sales topic about why I didn't get why the 360 was still selling so well, but this just confuses me even more. I got my 360 as a gift, so I never really paid much attention to prices, but even the core PS3 box comes with more value than this. Even the $30 I mentioned for reduced cost for Xbox Live, you could use that to buy a headset as cheap as the ones that come with the 360. And that's a one time cost, not a recurring one. The console comes with more now, but still, the selling point seems kind of weak when they charge you for something like online on a yearly basis.

I dont count the arcade. To me, that thing is the biggest waste of money.

$199.99 for the console, but what if you want more later on? That'll cost you an extra $150+. $50 more, just to save $100 at first. Why bother? Get the ACTUAL 360 console.

i really didnt think any fanboyisms would happen by saying what i said, sheesh. i might as well add to where this is going, and say i got a ps3 for 300$, a 360 for $400, but the 360 came with 2 controllers, a cheap mic, a game and a 250GB 360 while the ps3 came by itself at 120GB, so i think the value is the same more or less when you add live into it

The PS3 is overpriced? HA. Funny joke. It's a sweet blu-ray player, awesome gaming machine, also a great source for Netflix.

It's not about the price of the console, it's the stuff you can put in the console. I expect the 360 still sells well because there's enough 360-only stuff that people want to use/play which justifies the purchase for them. Same goes for the ps3 (hence why lots of gamers have both).

It's all about getting that return investment back.

@chromekreeper well I wasn't counting any bundles or timed deals or stuff like that. I actually managed to get a 160 GB Limited Edition Drake's Fortune PS3 brand new off Sony Style with an extra controller for $300. I was talking about normal prices for items. Unless you find a special deal, you're generally losing money once you add in Live, even with a discount on it. Sure, it's not an enormous difference, but it seems that the PS3 offers a little more value for the core package.

I mean, sure, there are some exclusives that can draw people into buying both systems, but since the most common argument for buying the 360 used to be that most games were on both systems anyways and that the 360 was cheaper, it's kinda lost its touch. Especially since even if you were to manage to get live at $30 a year, it still adds up. And that's supposing that you manage to either repeatedly get discounts like that or just buy multiple Live cards at once.

You can play a lot of the 360 exclusives on a pc too. I'm still kinda of intrigued by Alan Wake, even though I have no idea what it's about. Maybe I'll pick it up when it gets cheaper. BTW, do you have to pay for live to play those games on pc, or does it get free online there? I'm saving up to buy myself a gaming pc, partly in anticipation for the next AOE, but I've never really had much experience with it.

It's very misleading to say that the PSP is in the top position; the DS is actually on top. Adding together all the DS versions greatly outstrips the total PSP sales.

Some people might say that people who already have one DS version buy a newer one, but (a) that's a judgment, and (b) same goes for the PSP 1000, 2000, and 3000, which are all listed together.

So, to recap: the DS is on top, not the PSP.

More people rebuy the DS than PSP. I can't offer any hard evidence to support this aside from the majority of comments on this very site that support that claim. It's like the iPhone. Everyone I know who owns one has owned several. Those that haven't owned more than 1 version of the iPhone either just couldn't afford it (but wanted a new one) or just got a 3GS after the price drop (but are still excited about eventually getting a new one).

I've certainly seen my fair share of people rebuying the PSP, mostly when it comes to positive comments on the Go (fictional example: "I owned a PSP-1000 before this, so it was worth the upgrade to me"). The PSP Go itself has mostly flopped compared to the DSi, and tons of people who owned a regular DS either got a DS Lite and stopped, or went straight to the DSi (again, based on comments I've read on Joystiq.)

Even knowing that though the DS still comes out on top. While the actual number of owners matters (1 person buys 1000 handhelds that's 999 less people buying games, 1000 people buy 1000 handhelds, that's 1000 potential customers in the market), as far as Nintendo is concerned their handheld is doing amazing. The sheer fact that people will buy updated versions speaks volumes about the quality of the device.

In conclusion, what does it matter if the PSP is listed on top? It's widely known that the DS/DSi has more than double the sales of the PSP in the end.

So its PSP 3000 and the PSP go.

@Chazzr I really don't get the why the DS does so much better than the psp. I've had a DSI XL for awhile now and only own two games. I just can't find anything i want to play. But when i look at the psp there's all kinds of games i want to play. I just no longer own one. Thanks to the sorry low life's that broke into my house.

Why aren't the 3 versions of the DS and the two versions of the PSP combined? I mean, other than so that we can make fun of the PSP Go. Is it really fair to say that the PSP is in the top spot when almost 50,000 DSes were sold? I guess it's not important, I don't own either system, but it seems like a curious way to do it.

Joystiq feels the need to remain relevant. They probably would have thrown in a 9/11 reference the week after it happened. Not that I wouldn't find it entertaining.
